The blind boss's nanny
Chapter 157 With You By My Side
Just after the year-end, Lu Tingzhao threw himself back into an intensive treatment cycle.
However, no one expected that a sudden change would occur—Lu Shen, the uncle who had been bedridden for a long time, suddenly deteriorated in the middle of the night and ultimately did not survive until dawn.
Ye Qiyun wept bitterly at her husband's bedside.
Lu Xingyuan and his sister were devastated, forced to shed their naivety overnight. Lu Xingyuan, in particular, who was always unruly, took a long leave of absence from school and returned to his mother's side, trying to hold up the suddenly collapsed half of the sky.
Ye Qiyun had been pampered for many years and had never really handled such an important matter before; Lu Xingyuan, a young man, was even more inexperienced. Faced with the endless funeral arrangements, social obligations, and family coordination, both mother and son were overwhelmed and helpless.
Just as they were hesitating about whether to ask Lu Tingzhao, who was still undergoing treatment, for help, Lu Tingzhou, with a cold face, took over all the responsibilities. However, his words remained sharp and unforgiving:
"Your brother's eyes are at a critical stage; don't bother him with these trivial matters!"
"How do you guys usually manage? Now you're completely clueless?"
Although Ye Qiyun and Lu Xingyuan were blushing and felt stifled, they dared not utter a single word in rebuttal.
Right now, we really can only rely on this strange son.
With Lu Tingzhou in charge of overall planning, everything proceeded smoothly. He was efficient and thorough, handling the funeral with solemnity and propriety, without disrupting any established procedures.
At the end of the funeral, Lu Tingzhao, accompanied by Qin Xiu, personally went to the cemetery. He bent down and gently placed a bouquet of white lilies in front of the brand-new tombstone.
Putting aside the less-than-glorious past between his mother and Lu Shen, to be fair, this uncle was one of the few elders who explicitly offered his support when Lu Shen first took over the company amidst internal and external troubles.
Even after he married Ye Qiyun, Lu Shen voluntarily withdrew from the core competition of the board of directors. Over the years, amidst the many undercurrents within the family and the group, more or less, or perhaps because of his mother, he always stood on his own side.
Now that the person is gone, all grudges are forgotten. Even Lu Tingzhou, who is usually vengeful and deeply resentful of Ye Qiyun and her son, took the initiative to handle the funeral arrangements out of consideration for Lu Tingzhao. This change brought comfort to Lu Tingzhao's heart.
He thought of Lu Xingyuan, who was already able to calmly assist his mother in receiving guests, and also of Lu Tingxi, who was becoming increasingly composed and capable in the group and able to stand on his own.
The burden on my shoulders seems to be being shared.
He finally no longer needs to, and can finally, no longer need to, do everything himself and support everything on his own.
However, the feedback from the new round of treatment showed that the effect was minimal, or even negligible, with almost no progress.
The medical team led by Codonopsis pilosula worked day and night, trying several of the most cutting-edge and daring nerve repair and stimulation programs in the world.
Those sophisticated instruments introduced microcurrents or special drugs into Lu Tingzhao's head and around his eyes. The process was long and tedious, and sometimes accompanied by severe nervous headaches or unbearable soreness and numbness.
Lu Tingzhao silently endured it, cold sweat beading on his forehead, but his back remained straight as a pine tree.
However, when the inspection reports were presented to Codonopsis pilosula, the data curves were almost flat, and the response of the optic nerve was weak and almost negligible.
Dang Shen's furrowed brows deepened day by day, and the atmosphere within the team grew increasingly tense.
"Mr. Lu,"
After a key assessment meeting, Dang Can appeared somewhat tired, his tone cautious and heavy.
"The current mainstream treatments are not yielding ideal results. The stubbornness of nerve damage has exceeded expectations. We may need... a longer treatment period, or even consider some... exploratory therapies that have not yet been widely clinically validated. The risks will be higher, the process more painful, and... the outcome still cannot be guaranteed."
After listening, Lu Tingzhao simply nodded slightly, his face expressionless, as if he had already expected this outcome.
But standing beside him, Lin Xiaoman could clearly feel the sense of powerlessness emanating from him.
He became unusually silent. Outside of treatment, he often sat alone by the window, unable to see anything, yet it was as if he could gaze through that eternal darkness at some pointless void.
Lin Xiaoman saw this and was anxious. She didn't understand the complicated medical principles, but she understood Lu Tingzhao.
She began trying different methods to pull him out of that quagmire.
She took extra care of his discomfort after treatment, prepared his favorite foods, told him about the trivial things that happened at the manor in a relaxed tone, or simply sat quietly with him, holding his hand.
"Chairman, how are you feeling today? Is your headache any better? Aunt Mei made some Gastrodia elata and pigeon soup, would you like to drink a little bit later?"
"Dr. Dang just told me privately that although the data hasn't changed much, he noticed that your response to certain frequencies of stimulation is a little clearer than it was a few days ago! He said this is a very subtle but positive sign!"
"Look, Yuanbao can even run a few steps today! It's been working hard on its rehabilitation, so as its owner, you can't let it fall behind!"
She always spoke of even the smallest progress with hope, and downplayed the long wait and pain as "it will pass soon."
Her voice became the only constant and warm background sound in the ward.
However, the urge to give up gripped Lu Tingzhao once again. The gap between the enormous sacrifices and the faint hope was despairing.
Finally, after a long and grueling combined treatment that lasted all day, Lu Tingzhao was exhausted. Leaning back in his chair, he spoke for a long time to Lin Xiaoman, who had been by his side the whole time:
"Xiaoman... perhaps, this really is the end."
He reached out, found her wrist, and gripped it tightly, the force revealing exhaustion.
He closed his eyes, as if trying to convince himself.
"Living like this... isn't so bad. With you by my side, living like this for the rest of my life is enough."
Lin Xiaoman's heart skipped a beat. She could hear the discouragement in his words, and even more so, the deep-seated helplessness behind them.
"Can't!"
She retorted almost immediately, her voice rising.
"You wish! I'm not going to be devoted to you forever! Have you forgotten how lazy I am?"
Seeing that the man remained unmoved with his eyes downcast, she steeled herself, deliberately put on a stern face, and "threatened" him in a fierce tone:
"Haven't you seen the news? Those impatient caregivers abuse and beat people! When you're old and can't move, I'll yell at you and won't feed you! I... I'll hit you!"
Lu Tingzhao was finally amused by her clumsy "threat," a low laugh escaping his throat, tinged with helpless indulgence:
"I'll let you hit me. I'm doing it willingly."
