The little girl responded and left. A moment later, the curtain was lifted and Amber walked in.

In just over ten days, she had lost a lot of weight. She was wearing a light blue dress, her face was bare of makeup, and there were obvious dark circles under her eyes.

When she saw Chen Wanxing, her eyes lit up, and she quickly stepped forward: "Sister Wanxing, you've come to see me!"

Chen Wanxing stood up and took her hand, which was slightly cool to the touch. He asked with concern, "Why have you lost so much weight in just a few days? Are you feeling unwell?"

Amber's lips moved slightly, but she only whispered, "Thank you for your concern, sister. I'm just having some trouble sleeping, but it's nothing serious."

Madam Liu immediately chimed in, her tone a loving complaint: "You child, you're so thoughtful. Everyone in the family loves you, but you always seem to get stuck on things, acting like the sky is falling if you leave the Marquis's mansion."

If you ask me, home is always the best place; why would anyone suffer in their own home?

Upon hearing this, Amber's eyes reddened slightly. She lowered her head, pursed her lips tightly, but did not refute him.

Chen Wanxing understood, gently patted Amber's hand, but turned her gaze to Madam Liu.

"Auntie is right. Of course, we would love our own flesh and blood. Sister Amber is simple-minded. When she was in the Marquis's mansion, the Madam and the young master took pity on her for this and protected her a lot."

Now that our master has shown us mercy and allowed us to return to our hometown, where we are cared for by our uncles, aunts, and other relatives, it is a good thing.

It's only natural that she would feel depressed after suddenly leaving the place she grew up in. Hopefully, her elders will be patient and understanding.

Chen Wanxing paused, his gaze sweeping over Liu's somewhat stiff face, before continuing:

"Amber and I came from the capital together, and here in Kaifeng, we are the closest of sisters."

If Amber ever feels bored at home or wants to talk to someone, she can always come stay with me for a while. I will take good care of her and never let her feel lonely or suffer any injustice.

Her voice was not loud, but every word was clear.

Liu's expression changed several times, and her smile faltered. She chuckled dryly twice and said, "What you say is true, Miss. You are so kind. We will naturally take good care of Amber."

Knowing that it was best to stop there, Chen Wanxing didn't say anything more. She then chatted with Amber for a few more minutes, asking about her daily life.

Amber mostly just nodded or gave brief replies, looking listless. Seeing that he had achieved his goal, Chen Wanxing got up to take his leave.

With a forced smile, Madam Liu saw them off. As they left Amber's house, Granny Li whispered:

"Miss, Amber's appearance clearly indicates that she is feeling deeply troubled. We cannot trust what Madam Liu said."

"I know." Chen Wanxing's gaze turned slightly cold, but there was nothing she could do at the moment. After all, they were Amber's relatives.

She came here today hoping to make them more cautious. All she can do now is hold Amber back, at least to prevent this family from sending her away or killing her quietly.

Chen Wanxing felt she had done more than enough, and besides, even if she wanted to help, she didn't know where to start, and she didn't want this to affect her mood any further, so she put the matter out of her mind as soon as she left.

When they left Amber's house, the sun was just rising overhead. By the time they returned to Whitestone Lane, it was already noon.

Pushing open the courtyard gate, Yunzhu was squatting at the kitchen door, eagerly waiting. Seeing them return, she immediately came to greet them.

"Miss, Granny, you're back. I've just finished preparing the meal, and it's ready to eat."

The three moved to a side room for their meal. Yunzhu quickly set out the food: a plate of green vegetables, a bowl of tofu soup, and a bowl of rice.

Yunzhu was indeed diligent, but Chen Wanxing glanced at the food on the table and found it extremely bland, with no appetite whatsoever.

However, since it was already prepared, Chen Wanxing still picked up her chopsticks, tasted a bite of the vegetables, and then scooped up a spoonful of soup. After tasting it, she silently put it down.

The taste was really ordinary. Vegetables are most reliant on oil and salt, but Yunzhu seemed reluctant to use any. This was certainly not comparable to what she had done at the Marquis's residence, and it was even worse than Li Mama's cooking skills.

Seeing Yunzhu's expectant gaze, she ultimately couldn't bring herself to actually praise her, and simply used a few words before putting it aside.

After the meal, Chen Wanxing called the two to the main hall, where she sat in the seat of honor.

"Now that we've truly settled down, it's time to establish some rules for the household so that things can proceed in an orderly manner and everyone can relax a bit."

She first looked at Granny Li, her tone carrying a sense of reliance: "Granny is an old woman with many years of experience, knowledgeable and steady in handling matters."

From now on, you will be in charge of all kitchen purchases and meal preparation.

As she spoke, she smiled with a hint of helplessness, her gaze sweeping over the leftover food on the table.

"My palate has become a bit picky thanks to the Marquis's household, so I'll have to trouble you from now on, Granny. Also, I'll need your help in overseeing our social interactions, such as what gifts to prepare for our visit to Amber yesterday."

Granny Li calmly replied, "Don't worry, young lady, this old servant understands."

Then, she looked at Yunzhu and said gently, "Yunzhu, you are young, quick and nimble, and you are also very thoughtful. From now on, you will stay by my side and be responsible for cleaning the house, washing clothes, and taking care of my daily life."

Seeing that Chen Wanxing had barely touched the food, Yunzhu knew that her cooking skills were not up to par, and she blushed with embarrassment.

She was completely convinced by the arrangement and nodded quickly, "Yes, Miss. I will do my best."

Chen Wanxing nodded slightly and said, "As for household expenses, you, Granny, will be in charge of the accounts. You can manage the food, clothing, daily necessities, and social obligations. If there are any additional major expenses, we can discuss them separately."

She looked at the two of them and concluded firmly, "The three of us, master and servant, are one. Our first priority is to live a peaceful life behind closed doors. As long as you do your best, I will certainly not treat you unfairly."

Her words were clear and logical, employing both kindness and firmness. Both Granny Li and Yunzhu felt a chill run down their spines, yet also a profound sense of reassurance, and they agreed in unison.
