Chapter 4 Advancement to Soul Master
The moment the two nurses opened the door, the light in the ward flickered twice with a "zzzz" sound, turning a dim yellow.
A woman with long hair reaching her waist was lying on top of an old man on the hospital bed, sucking on something like she was eating noodles.
Hearing the noise, the woman suddenly looked up, her face as white as a swelled sheet of paper, her features twisted into a grimace, her mouth full of sharp teeth stained with black blood, and when she grinned, blood flowed down her chin, making her look like a demon crawling out of hell.
"A ghost!"
The two nurses screamed in fright, their legs went weak and they collapsed to the ground, their faces covered in tears and snot, unable to even crawl.
They had heard many ghost stories before, but seeing it with their own eyes made their hearts pound like they were going to explode.
"Little beauty, you've come at the perfect time, come play with me for a bit..."
The long-haired ghost floated up, its fingernails as long as blades, and reached out to grab the little nurse on the far left.
"You wretched creature, daring to commit violence in a hospital, are you tired of living?"
A cold voice suddenly rang out, and the long-haired ghost's expression changed drastically. Without thinking, he dodged to the side.
A black mist chain flew in through the window with a "whoosh," grazed her soul, and slammed against the wall with a "bang," causing a layer of plaster to fall off.
Before she could react, the chains seemed to have eyes and came back, wrapping around her waist with a "whoosh".
"Who the hell is meddling in other people's business!"
The long-haired ghost struggled frantically and screamed shrilly.
Zhong Jiu stepped in through the window, his figure disappearing into the shadows.
The two nurses couldn't see him; his spirit soldiers acted in ways that ordinary people would never have the chance to witness.
He looked at the demon writhing in its chains and sneered, "I only care about scum like you who take lives!"
With a tightening of his wrist, the Soul-Binding Lock instantly contracted.
With a few "crack" sounds, the long-haired ghost's soul was directly shredded into black mist.
Zhong Jiu glanced at the nurse sprawled on the ground, then turned and walked towards other wards. There was more than one ghost in this hospital.
"Ling, Lingling, the ghost... the ghost is gone?"
"It seems like... the wind blew the curtains up?"
The two nurses looked at each other, staring at the bright lights that had returned, thinking it was all an illusion. Only the tear stains at the corners of their eyes reminded them how dangerous the situation had been.
Chung Gau has already activated "Ghost-Slaying Mode".
The starving ghost in Ward 3 was broken apart by his chain.
The hanged ghost in ward number seven was choked as soon as he poked his head out;
The infant ghost in ward number eleven was suppressed by the Soul-Binding Lock before it even had a chance to cry...
In just half an hour, he slew five evil spirits.
"Adding to the previous four, we only need one more to reach the required soul level!"
Zhong Jiu's eyes lit up, and he set his sights on the morgue in the basement of the inpatient department.
That place has the strongest yin energy; it definitely holds a "big dish."
Sure enough, as soon as I reached the entrance of the morgue, I felt a bone-chilling cold.
The malevolent aura emanating from Chung Gau was so strong that the ghost inside was so frightened that it huddled in the freezer and dared not come out.
He scoffed, "You think you can hide and still not be found?"
He suddenly threw out the Soul-Binding Lock, and the chain seemed to have eyes, heading straight for the innermost freezer.
"Soul-binding chains, pull them out!"
With a loud crash, the freezer door was smashed open, and an old ghost with a wrinkled face screamed as he rushed out, his body steaming with white vapor, heading straight for Zhong Jiu's face.
This old ghost is cunning; he actually bypassed the chains and attacked the main body, trying to catch the enemy off guard.
But Zhong Jiu was so engrossed in killing ghosts that he had long been on guard against this move.
He sneered, flicked his wrist, and the returning Soul-Binding Lock instantly wove into a wall of iron chains.
The old ghost crashed headfirst into it, and his soul instantly cracked, billowing out black smoke.
Zhong Jiu stepped forward, stomping on the old ghost's soul, the chains tightening and loosening: "You're just the tenth one, there to make up the numbers!"
The old ghost's screams abruptly ceased and vanished completely.
Just then, the system notification exploded in his mind: "Congratulations, host, for slaying a total of ten evil spirits and successfully advancing to the rank of Soul Messenger!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the black vortex in Zhong Jiu's dantian suddenly expanded to more than three times its original size. A power far exceeding that before surged throughout his body, making his bones crack and his whole body feel refreshed.
He looked down and saw that the Soul-Binding Lock in his hand hadn't changed, but a dark, heavy ghost-beating stick had suddenly appeared at his waist.
The staff was icy cold and covered with densely packed soul-suppressing patterns; it looked like a force to be reckoned with.
"Ding! Host information updated, Zhong Jiu, Level: Soul Servant!"
As soon as the system notification sounded, ten palm-sized, jet-black military talismans clattered into Zhong Jiu's palm. The icy touch made his eyes light up: "Wow! Is this the prestige of a Soul Envoy? Ten subordinate positions, at least I'm not a lone commander now!"
But his excitement had barely worn off when he scratched his head. Subordinates weren't just anyone; they had to be "qualified ghost geniuses" who met the rules of the underworld.
He recalled the evil spirits he had killed in the past few days. They were either scum who indiscriminately slaughtered innocent people or madmen whose minds were filled with killing. They were not even qualified to be reincarnated, let alone become soul soldiers.
"Recruiting for the underworld is even stricter than corporate campus recruitment!"
Zhong Jiu muttered a complaint, tucked the military token into his pocket, and continued studying the system panel. He was immediately shocked by what he saw: "I thought the next level would be a Soul Envoy, but it jumped to Inspector?"
The Inspector is the head of the lower-level officials in the underworld. He is in charge of ten Soul Officers, and each Soul Officer leads ten Soul Soldiers. In other words, when he is promoted next, he will be a small leader with a hundred ghost soldiers under his command!
Upon seeing the promotion requirements, Zhong Jiu chuckled again: "Three hundred evil spirits to eliminate? Thirty times more than before, that's impressive!"
The sky was just beginning to lighten, and there were still two hours until dawn.
Zhong Jiu clenched his fist, turned around and rushed back to the hospital. Killing ghosts was becoming more and more addictive!
He had already cleared out most of the evil spirits in the hospital, and then he followed the yin energy to three more wards before finally killing the three little ghosts that had escaped.
The next morning, Zhong Jiu was shocked by his appetite. He ate five bowls of beef noodles and ten steamed buns before he felt full.
The black vortex in his dantian spun rapidly, converting the nutrients from the food into soul power. His arms, which were originally a little thin, began to show faint muscle lines and felt hard to the touch.
"Is this the constitution of a Soul Messenger? I'll be able to carry bricks faster than everyone else from now on!"
Zhong Jiu raised an eyebrow at himself in the mirror, then went to the original owner's workplace to complete the resignation procedures. His current main job is slaying demons, and he can no longer do his old job!
That night, they went directly to another city center hospital.
The evil spirits here were indeed numerous. He gripped the Soul-Binding Lock and charged left and right, the chains whistling loudly as he fought. In less than two hours, he had dealt with fifteen evil spirits, and the "kill count" on the system panel was jumping wildly.
"The hospital is the perfect dungeon for grinding monsters!"
Zhong Jiu whistled contentedly as he went home, but on the third day he rushed to the third hospital and found only three weaklings. He was so angry that he almost dismantled the hospital's fire hydrant.
"This wretched place is cleaner than a face!"
Chung Kau was kicking pebbles on the side of the road when he suddenly stopped and saw the words "Yu Chun Yuan Community" on the wall across the street.
I immediately took out my phone and checked. The navigation map showed that this place was only 500 meters away from the "dismembered body underground parking garage" mentioned in the news.
He touched the ghost-slaying staff at his waist, his eyes flashing with a fierce light: "I used to be afraid of vengeful ghosts, but now I'm a soul messenger, it's time to go and meet that fierce ghost!"
We set off without hesitation. As soon as we reached the intersection, we saw three layers of police tape, and a sign that read "Danger Zone, Unauthorized Entry Will Be at Your Own Risk" was bigger than a door panel.
Chung Kau ignored him and strode towards the underground parking garage.
The entrance was completely blocked by cement bags, and the seals were pasted on like Spring Festival couplets, but he passed right through in his spirit form without even getting dusty.
As soon as he entered the garage, a strong smell of blood hit him, making him wince.
Several days have passed, and the dismembered body has long been cleaned up, but the stench of blood still lingers, as if it has seeped into the cement floor.
"He's got something."
Zhong Jiu was not afraid at all; on the contrary, he was filled with excitement. The strength of this Yin energy was much greater than that of the little ghost before!
