Chapter 15 Tiger Roars in the Mountain Village, Striking Off Villains
The next day.
The atmosphere at breakfast was more somber than usual. Everyone knew what Lin Feng was going to do that day.
Lin Feng ate quickly, put down his chopsticks, and looked at Shi Xiu: "Give me the land deed."
Shi Xiu got up, carefully took the oilcloth package from under the mat, and handed it to Lin Feng. Liu Yun watched nervously, and A Yue stopped sharpening her knife.
"You all stay home and lock the doors." Lin Feng tucked the land deed into his pocket, picked up the thick-backed machete, carefully wrapped the handle and part of the blade with burlap, and slung it over his back. He didn't bring a bow and arrows; the machete was enough to deal with these villagers, and it was even more intimidating.
"I...I'll go with you!" Shi Xiu suddenly stood up, her chest heaving, her eyes defiant. "The fields belong to my family! I have to go!"
"I'll go too!" Liu Yun said softly, though her face was pale.
A-Yue didn't say anything, but silently picked up her newly forged, gleaming wood-chopping knife and stood beside Lin Feng, showing her attitude through her actions.
Lin Feng looked at the three women; their eyes held tension, but even more so, a resolute determination to not back down. He knew they were worried that he would suffer alone.
"Shi Xiu, come with me. Liu Yun, A Yue, you two stay home and look after Cao'er," Lin Feng decided. Shi Xiu was strong-willed and a direct stakeholder (his nominal wife), so it was appropriate for her to go. Liu Yun was gentle, and A Yue had a special background and was quiet, so it was safer for her to stay at home.
Shi Xiu nodded vigorously and immediately went inside to find a sturdy wooden stick to hold in her hand. Liu Yun was somewhat disappointed, but she didn't insist anymore, only looking at Lin Feng with concern. A Yue glanced at Lin Feng, silently took a step back, but gripped the wood-chopping knife in her hand even tighter.
Lin Feng led Shi Xiu out of the courtyard and headed towards the house of Lin Youfu, the village head, at the east end of the village.
As the village of Xiahe was just waking up in the early morning, some villagers were startled to see Lin Feng carrying a machete that was clearly a weapon, with a cold expression, and Shi Xiu beside him, who was gripping a wooden stick tightly and looking resolute. They all made way for him and then gathered together to whisper among themselves.
"Is the Lin family boy going to the village head's house?"
"He's carrying a knife! Is this for real?"
"For those few acres of land? The village head's family is not to be trifled with. His uncle is a clan elder, and his two sons are also arrogant..."
"I heard that Lin Feng has rendered meritorious service in the border army, become an official, and even made connections with people in the county government..."
"Just wait and see, there's going to be some fun today!"
Amidst the murmurs, Lin Feng and Shi Xiu arrived at the relatively imposing earthen-walled courtyard of Lin Youfu's house. The gate was tightly closed.
Lin Feng didn't knock on the door; he went straight up and kicked the door!
"Bang!"
The not-so-thick wooden door opened with a thud, the latch broken.
The loud noise startled everyone in the courtyard. Lin Youfu was having breakfast with his two sons when they heard the noise and jumped in fright. The older son, Lin Dahu, was about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, burly and with a fierce-looking face; the younger son, Lin Ergou, was in his early twenties and had a thuggish air about him. When they saw someone kicking the door, they immediately dropped their bowls and chopsticks and stood up.
"Who the hell..." Lin Dahu cursed as he looked up, only to see Lin Feng standing with his knife on his back and Shi Xiu with a frosty expression, followed by some villagers peeking around. His curses immediately caught in his throat.
Lin Youfu, having seen some of the world, forced himself to remain calm, put down his chopsticks, and walked out with a stern face: "Nephew Lin Feng, what are you doing? Kicking down my door so early in the morning, have you no manners?"
Lin Feng walked into the courtyard, his gaze sweeping over Lin Youfu and his two obviously blustering but cowardly sons before finally settling on Lin Youfu's face. He calmly said, "Uncle Village Head, I've come to reclaim my land. The land deed for those three mu of dry land by the stream west of the village is here." As he spoke, he took out the yellowed paper from his pocket and unfolded it.
Lin Youfu's eyelids twitched; of course he knew about those three acres of land. Back then, Lin Feng's parents had died early, and taking advantage of Lin Feng's youth and the conscription, he seized the land under the guise of "temporary management," and had been farming it himself all these years. He originally thought that Lin Feng had died at the border and that the matter would be over, but who would have thought that he would not only return alive but also seem to have made a name for himself.
"Nephew Lin Feng, what makes you say that?" Lin Youfu forced a smile. "Those three acres of meager land were entrusted to me by the clan after your parents passed away, because you were young and had no one to care for you. Over the years, the land taxes and corvée labor have all been borne by my Lin family. What, now that you're back, you want the land back? There's no such thing as a free lunch!"
"Trusteeship?" Lin Feng sneered, pointing to the land deed. "It's written clearly in black and white on the deed that the land belongs to Lin Feng. Land taxes and corvée labor? The savings my parents left me, and the harvest from those few acres of land over the past few years, aren't they enough to cover it? Should I go to the county government's household registration office to check the accounts and see who has been paying taxes and performing corvée labor all these years?"
Lin Youfu's expression changed. He certainly couldn't withstand an investigation. Most of the harvest from those fields went into his own pocket, and he would delay or evade paying taxes and performing corvée labor as much as possible.
"Lin Feng! Stop talking nonsense!" Seeing his father speechless, Lin Dahu, emboldened by his height and strength and with his younger brother's help, stepped forward, pointed at Lin Feng's nose, and cursed, "That land is what our family has worked so hard to cultivate for so many years. You think you can just take it as you please? You think you're so great just because you served in the army for a few days?"
Lin Ergou chimed in, "That's right! If you know what's good for you, get lost! Otherwise, don't blame us for being impolite!" As he spoke, he rolled up his sleeves, revealing the tattoos on his thin arms.
More villagers gathered to watch, but no one dared to step forward to mediate; they all watched from a distance.
Shi Xiu was trembling with anger. She gripped the wooden stick tightly and was about to step forward to argue. Lin Feng raised his hand to stop her.
He took a step forward, standing just inches away from Lin Dahu, his gaze calmly meeting his eyes: "You mean, you're not going to return it?"
His tone was so calm, so calm, that it made Lin Dahu feel a little uneasy. But with everyone watching, he couldn't back down, so he shouted, his voice trembling with fear, "So what if I don't return it? You can't kill me, can you?!"
"Murder is illegal," Lin Feng said calmly, then suddenly attacked without warning!
Instead of using a knife, his left hand shot out like lightning, grabbed the finger Lin Dahu was pointing at his nose, and twisted it backward!
"Snap!"
The sickening sound of bones cracking rang out clearly.
"Ah—!" Lin Dahu let out a pig-like scream, his fingers bent at an odd angle, and he bent over in pain.
Lin Feng didn't stop moving. His right foot silently hooked forward, tripping Lin Dahu's supporting leg's ankle. Lin Dahu, who had already lost his balance due to the excruciating pain, was tripped and fell forward like a sack of potatoes, crashing face down onto the muddy ground of the yard, his mouth full of mud, his screams becoming distorted.
All of this happened in the blink of an eye. Lin Ergou, standing nearby, didn't even see how Lin Feng moved before he saw his older brother scream and fall to the ground. Terrified, he yelled and grabbed a hoe from the side, smashing it down on Lin Feng's head without a second thought!
Shi Xiu exclaimed in alarm, "Watch out!"
Lin Feng seemed to have eyes in the back of his head. The moment Lin Ergou swung his hoe down, he slightly turned his body to avoid the blade, and at the same time, his right hand lashed out like a whip, striking Lin Ergou's wrist holding the hoe precisely with the back of his hand!
With a sharp "crack!" Lin Ergou felt as if his wrist had been struck by an iron rod, the pain excruciating. The hoe flew out of his hand and clattered to the ground.
Lin Feng followed up with an elbow strike, slamming it hard into Lin Ergou's ribs. Lin Ergou groaned, clutching his ribs and staggering backward, his face pale, too pained to speak.
From the moment Lin Dahu made his move to the moment Lin Ergou fell to the ground, only a few breaths passed. Lin Youfu didn't even have time to react before his two sons were lying on the ground screaming in pain, and squatting down, gasping for breath.
The courtyard was deathly silent. The villagers who had gathered were stunned. They knew Lin Feng was a border soldier who might have some skills, but they hadn't expected him to be this powerful! The Lin brothers, Da Hu and Er Gou, were notorious for their arrogance in the village, bullying others with their strength and the power of the village head. But in front of Lin Feng, they were like paper!
Lin Feng patted non-existent dust off his hands, as if he had done something insignificant.
He looked at Lin Youfu, whose face was pale and who was trembling all over, and said in a calm tone, "Uncle Village Head, can you speak properly now?"
"You...you...you dare to commit violence and injure people!" Lin Youfu pointed at Lin Feng, his finger trembling, his voice trembling. "I'm going to the county government to report you! I'll report you for assaulting a neighbor and forcibly seizing land!"
"Assault and injury?" Lin Feng's lips curled into a cold smile. "Everyone saw it. Your two sons attacked first. I was only acting in self-defense. As for forcibly seizing the land..." He waved the land deed in his hand. "The deed is here, on file with the government. But you, village head, have been forcibly occupying military family land for years, embezzling harvests, and evading taxes. I wonder, when you get to the county office, will Steward Liu or Captain Li of the city defense battalion believe whom more?"
Lin Youfu was struck dumb, his face instantly turning from white to ashen. Manager Liu? Captain Li of the city defense battalion? Lin Feng had actually gotten involved with these connections? He had been somewhat skeptical before, but seeing Lin Feng's confidence, he was now almost entirely convinced. If things escalated to the county government, how could a mere village head like himself possibly contend with someone with military connections and influence over the government's procurement? Moreover, his land grabbing certainly couldn't withstand scrutiny.
Cold sweat instantly soaked Lin Youfu's back. He looked at his eldest son groaning on the ground, his youngest son squatting beside him, gasping for breath in pain, and then at Lin Feng's calm yet sharp eyes. He finally understood that the young man before him was no longer the orphan he could manipulate at will.
"Lin...nephew Lin Feng..." Lin Youfu's momentum completely collapsed, his voice hoarse, "Let's talk this out, let's talk this out...we're all from the same village, why resort to violence..."
"I'm taking back the land. I was originally planning to forgo the harvests of the past few years, but you insisted on taking the initiative. So, I'm determined to have the harvests from these past few years. You'll need to pay for them in cash and grain, and deliver them to my yard within three days." Lin Feng interrupted him, his tone leaving no room for argument. "If you're short even a penny or a grain of rice, I'll take the land deed and the evidence of your tax evasion over the years to the county office to speak with Steward Liu. By the way," he glanced at Lin Dahu and Lin Ergou, "it seems my two brothers' hands and feet will need some time to heal. Uncle Village Head can give them some compensation for lost wages and medicine; after all, they were the ones who struck first, right?"
Lin Youfu's face twitched, his heart bleeding. Not only had he lost his fields, but he also had to pay compensation in money and grain! But looking at the machete wrapped in burlap behind Lin Feng, which only made it look more ferocious, and thinking about the "Manager Liu" and "Team Leader Li" he mentioned, he didn't dare to say a single word of objection.
"...Fine, fine...I'll return the land to you, and I'll compensate you for the money and grain!" Lin Youfu practically spat out these words through gritted teeth.
"Words are no proof; let's have a written agreement." Lin Feng was prepared. He took out a rough piece of paper and a small ink stick (bought from the county town) from his pocket and handed them to an elderly villager who could read and was watching nearby. "Could you please be a witness and help me write this down?"
The old villager hesitated for a moment, but seeing Lin Feng's gaze sweep over him, he dared not refuse. He had no choice but to take the paper and pen and, according to Lin Feng's dictation, write down a receipt for the return of the land and compensation for money and grain (Lin Feng casually quoted a reasonable amount), noting that it would be paid in full within three days. Lin Youfu, with trembling hands, pressed his fingerprint on the document in the presence of the villagers.
Lin Feng carefully folded the document and put it in his pocket. Then, he walked over to Lin Dahu, who was still groaning, and squatted down beside him.
Lin Dahu trembled in fright, thinking that Lin Feng was going to hit him again.
Lin Feng simply reached out, grabbed his broken finger, and pulled and pushed it forcefully!
"Ah—!" Another scream rang out, but after the scream, Lin Dahu felt that although his fingers were still in excruciating pain, the awkward feeling of dislocation had disappeared.
"The bone is set. Find a doctor to apply some medicine, and you'll be fine in a couple of months." Lin Feng stood up, his tone as calm as if he were commenting on the nice weather. "As for you," he looked at Lin Ergou, whose face was deathly pale, "your ribs aren't broken, just some bruising. Rub some medicinal wine on it yourself."
After saying that, he stopped looking at the ashen-faced Lin Youfu family and said to Shi Xiu, "Let's go, let's go to the fields and take a look."
Shi Xiu was already deeply moved by what she saw. She nodded vigorously and followed Lin Feng, walking out of the village head's courtyard with her head held high under the complex gazes of the villagers.
Only after walking quite a distance did Shi Xiucai let out a long sigh of relief, her eyes filled with an unprecedented brilliance as she looked at Lin Feng's tall and straight back. She had witnessed the battles between tribal warriors and the ferocity of the Yan army soldiers, but she had never seen anyone like Lin Feng, who could subdue his opponent with swift and decisive methods, displaying both overwhelming force and cunning, and even showing a touch of "mercy" at the end (setting the bone), completely suppressing his opponent and preventing them from causing further trouble. This man was even stronger and more...reliable than she had imagined.
"Tian is coming back." Lin Feng's voice pulled her back from her thoughts.
"Yes!" Shi Xiu nodded emphatically, feeling a surge of warmth in his chest. It was not only the joy of regaining his lost property, but also a sense of security that he had someone to rely on and would no longer be bullied.
The two arrived at the three acres of dry land by the stream west of the village. Some withered winter vegetables grew in the field, clearly indicating that Lin Youfu's family hadn't taken much care of it. But regardless, this was their land.
Lin Feng looked at the fields, pondering, "I need to plow deeply before spring and get some manure. I also need to check the water source..."
He was making plans when suddenly, a clear, cold female voice came from behind him:
"Hey, you who was fighting earlier, you're pretty good."
Lin Feng and Shi Xiu turned around at the same time.
Beneath the old locust tree by the edge of the field stood a woman. She appeared to be in her early twenties, dressed in a faded indigo outfit, a cloth belt cinching her waist, outlining her lithe figure. Tall, almost as tall as Lin Feng, her long hair was simply tied back, revealing a smooth forehead and bright almond-shaped eyes. Her eyebrows were long and slender, carrying a touch of heroism; her nose was straight, and her lips were slightly pursed. She carried a long, narrow, coarse cloth bundle on her back, shaped like a sword. Standing there, she resembled a slender bamboo standing tall in the wind, exuding a unique air of chivalry and aloofness characteristic of those in the martial world.
She was looking at Lin Feng, her gaze filled with scrutiny and a hint of curiosity.
Lin Feng's eyes narrowed slightly. When did this woman approach? He hadn't even noticed her beforehand! Although his mind was focused on the fields and Shi Xiu, this level of concealment and lightness of movement was something that no ordinary village girl or even a typical martial artist could possess.
"You flatter me. It was a dispute between neighbors, and I had no choice but to do this." Lin Feng cupped his hands in greeting, his tone calm, but he was secretly on guard. The timing and manner of this woman's appearance were both suspicious.
The woman took a few steps closer, her gaze sweeping over the machete on Lin Feng's back and the thick calluses on his hands from years of drawing a bow and wielding a sword. Her gaze lingered on Shi Xiu's face for a moment before returning to Lin Feng's: "The style of the army? But the moves are strange, simple and direct, unlike the style of ordinary border soldiers."
Lin Feng became even more wary. This woman had a sharp eye. "Just trying to make a living, practicing haphazardly. And you are, young lady?"
"I was just passing by, asking for a bowl of water, and happened to see this commotion." The woman seemed unwilling to reveal her name, pointing to Lin Feng's two dilapidated but newly renovated houses not far away. "Is that your home? Would you be so kind as to do me a favor?"
Lin Feng hesitated for a moment, then nodded: "My humble abode is simple. If you don't mind, please come with me."
The woman followed half a step beside Lin Feng, her steps light and silent, her gaze openly scrutinizing him, making no attempt to conceal her curiosity.
Just as a disturbance in the fields seemed to have subsided, a new and unpredictable wave appeared. What changes would this woman's appearance bring to Lin Feng's newly settled family?
