Morning light streamed through the cracks in the dilapidated temple windows, casting beams of light onto the dusty ground.

The air after the rain was fresh and moist, mixed with the smell of mud and blood.

Shen Qingyi changed into a clean, moon-white ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress), with a light green vest over it. Her long hair was loosely tied up with a white jade hairpin. Although she could not hide the fatigue in her eyes, she had regained some of the refined demeanor of a noble lady.

"Miss, everything is ready."

Zhou Tong, the head of the guards, came over and bowed to report.

Shen Qingyi nodded slightly, her gaze turning to Lin Feng, who was inspecting the mule cart: "Young Master Lin, are we ready to depart?"

Lin Feng nodded: "Let's go."

The two groups merged into one and left the mountain god temple.

After traveling for several dozen miles, the road surface gradually dried, and patches of farmland and villages began to appear along the roadside.

"Master, Baisha Town is just ahead. We can have lunch there," Lei Bao said, turning back to Lin Feng in the carriage.

"Mm," Lin Feng replied.

Baisha Town is small, but it is located on a main road and is quite lively.

The group found a "Yuelai Inn" on the street, asked for a quiet courtyard, and settled their carriages and horses there.

The inn's lobby was already quite crowded with diners, mostly merchants and porters, who chatted and laughed loudly, creating a lively atmosphere.

When Shen Qingyi got out of the car, she wore a light veil hat to cover her face. Under the protection of Zhou Tong and others, she went straight into the backyard.

Even so, her slender figure and overall demeanor still attracted a lot of attention.

Lin Feng led Lei Bao and the others to sit down in a corner of the lobby and ordered some simple food.

As they were eating, Zhou Tong approached Lin Feng, cupped his hands in greeting, and said, "Young Master Lin, my young lady has prepared a small feast in the back courtyard flower hall. Please come and join us for a chat to express our gratitude."

Lin Feng looked up at him: "No need to be so polite."

"The young lady said she would never forget the life-saving grace. She would be honored to have the honor of being here, sir."

Zhou Tong was respectful, but very persistent.

Lin Feng hesitated for a moment, then stood up: "Lead the way."

There is a small garden in the backyard of the inn.

The flower hall is built by the water, and you can see a pond of withered lotus flowers when you open the window.

Shen Qingyi had changed into a light apricot-colored ruqun embroidered with lotus patterns. She was not wearing a veil and was standing by the window, gazing at the pond in a daze.

Hearing footsteps, she turned around and smiled slightly at Lin Feng.

"Young Master Lin, please have a seat."

A table of food and wine had already been set out in the main hall. Two maids stood by.

Lin Feng sat down in the guest seat.

Shen Qingyi sat in the main seat, personally holding the wine pot and pouring him a cup of wine.

"If it weren't for you, young master, Qingyi would likely have met with misfortune regarding the abandoned temple. This cup is to thank you for saving my life." She raised her cup, looking at Lin Feng with clear eyes.

"Miss Shen, you flatter me."

Lin Feng raised his glass and drank it all in one gulp.

The wine is osmanthus-infused from Jiangnan, with a smooth and sweet taste and a refreshing aftertaste.

Shen Qingyi also drank the wine in her cup, and a faint blush rose on her face, making her even more beautiful.

She put down her wine glass and said softly:

"Qingyi's home is in the south of Jinling City, on the banks of the Qinhuai River. Is your journey, young master, to visit a friend, or...?"

"Traveling," Lin Feng replied simply.

"Travel..." Shen Qingyi mused.

She didn't continue the topic, but instead said, "Since you've come to travel, young master, you must be interested in the scenery and customs of Jiangnan. During our trip together these few days, Qingyi may be able to give you a brief explanation."

"Thank you for your trouble, Miss Shen."

In the afternoon, the group continued their journey.

As if to fulfill her promise as a "guide," Shen Qingyi would sometimes slow down the carriage and ride alongside the mule cart, pointing out the scenery along the way to Lin Feng through the carriage window.

Her voice was clear and melodious, her Wu dialect soft and gentle. She spoke of historical anecdotes in a captivating and engaging way, adding a touch of interest to the otherwise tedious journey.

The two chatted casually, and before they knew it, the outline of another small town appeared in front of them.

"Yingchuan City ahead." Shen Qingyi said.

"Yingchuan is the seat of the prefecture and is much more prosperous than the towns along the way. The Huaiyang cuisine at 'Taibailou' in the city is superb. Qingyi is hosting, please have a taste, young master, as a small token of our hospitality."

"Miss Shen, you're too kind."

"Young Master saved Qingyi's life, what's a meal compared to that?"

Shen Qingyi turned to look at him, her eyes smiling.

"Moreover, it is Qingyi's good fortune to be able to discuss philosophy with someone like you, young master."

Her words were sincere, not just polite.

We stopped for a bite at a roadside teahouse halfway through the journey.

The teahouse was simple, but the hot tea and coarse tea cakes were quite refreshing.

As they were eating, a procession of carriages and horses arrived on the official road, quite impressive.

Two riders led the way, followed by a red-wheeled carriage with a magnificent canopy, surrounded by seven or eight elite guards. A small flag bearing the character "Pei" was stuck on the carriage shaft.

"They're from the Pei family of Yingchuan," Shen Qingyi said in a low voice, her brows furrowing almost imperceptibly.

The convoy stopped in front of the tea house.

The carriage curtain was lifted, and a young man in brocade robes stepped out. He was about twenty years old, with a fair complexion and no beard, and an air of arrogance between his brows and eyes.

As soon as he got out of the car, his gaze fell on Shen Qingyi. He was stunned for a moment, then his face lit up with surprise.

"Qingyi, my dear sister? It really is you!"

The young man in brocade robes strode over, his face beaming with smiles.

"It looked like it from a distance, I can't believe it really is! What are you doing here?"

Shen Qingyi stood up, curtsied, and said indifferently, "Young Master Pei, how clever."

"Oh dear, no 'Young Master Pei,' just call me 'Brother Pei'!"

Young Master Pei spoke warmly, his gaze sweeping over Shen Qingyi's face before glancing at Lin Feng beside him. Seeing that Lin Feng was dressed plainly, he paid him no heed.

"Where is Qingyi going? Why are you only taking these few guards? It's not safe! Perfect timing, I'm also returning to Yingchuan, why don't we go together? With me here, I guarantee no one will dare to bother us!"

"No need for Young Master Pei to trouble himself," Shen Qingyi said calmly.

"Qingyi has friends with her, so she's safe."

"Friend?" Only then did Young Master Pei look at Lin Feng properly, sizing him up and down, his eyes revealing disdain.

"And this is...?"

"My name is Lin Feng." Lin Feng stood up and clasped his hands in a respectful but not arrogant manner.

"Lin Feng?" Young Master Pei raised an eyebrow, clearly not having heard of the name, his tone carrying a condescending scrutiny.

"May I ask where Brother Lin is from? And where he works?"

"A merchant from the north, just passing through."

"Oh, a traveling merchant."

Young Master Pei drew out his words, his contempt growing even stronger, and turned to Shen Qingyi.

"Qingyi, I'm not trying to be mean, but when you're out in the world, you should bring more reliable people with you. It's best to avoid people whose backgrounds you don't know."

As he spoke, he gave Lin Feng a meaningful look.

Shen Qingyi's expression darkened slightly: "Young Master Pei, Young Master Lin is my savior. Please show him some respect."

"My savior?"

Young Master Pei was taken aback, then sneered.

"Him? Qingyi, don't be fooled. These days, there are all sorts of people, just good at sweet talk to deceive those who are naive..."
