Lin Feng put away his wood-chopping knife and walked behind the counter. The woman was still curled up there, trembling.

"Girl, it's alright now." He reached out his hand.

The woman looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears. After a moment's hesitation, she offered him her hand. Her hand was cold and soft.

Lin Feng helped her up and said to the shopkeeper, "Give her a bowl of noodles. Put it on my tab."

Lin Feng helped the woman sit down, and then sat down opposite her. The woman ate her noodles in small bites, occasionally stealing glances at him.

"What is your name, young lady? Where are you staying with your relatives?" Lin Feng asked.

"My name is Ye Qingshuang," the woman said in a low voice. "I came to seek refuge with my uncle in Qingshi Town. His name is Zhou Fugui, and he runs a cloth shop in town. But... but when I arrived, the cloth shop was closed. The neighbors said that my uncle was arrested by the government the day before yesterday, because... because he was accused of colluding with rebels."

Colluding with rebels? Lin Feng frowned. This charge could be serious or minor.

Why was your uncle arrested?

"I don't know either." Ye Qingshuang shook her head, tears falling again. "My parents passed away two years ago. I originally wanted to come and stay with my uncle, but who knew... now I don't know where to go..."

She cried so hard her tears fell like raindrops, and I felt sorry for her.

Lin Feng remained silent. This woman had a pitiful past and had just escaped from danger; he couldn't just abandon her.

"Come back to Kaoshantun with me first," he said. "I'll stay there temporarily, at least I'll have a place to stay. We'll make further plans once we have some progress on your uncle's matter."

Ye Qingshuang looked up in surprise: "Really? My benefactor is willing to take me in?"

"My name is Lin Feng," Lin Feng said. "Let's go after we finish our noodles."

Ye Qingshuang nodded emphatically and ate her noodles quickly. Lin Feng watched her, his mind racing. This woman's appearance was too coincidental, happening precisely when he was being questioned by the Zhao family's servants. And that Young Master Qin, the county magistrate's son, just happened to abduct a woman in the street?

But he sensed no malice from Ye Qingshuang, only panic and helplessness. Perhaps it was just a coincidence?

After finishing their noodles, Lin Feng led Ye Qingshuang away from the noodle shop. As they exited, he noticed several suspicious figures flashing past at the street corner.

Sure enough, they were being watched.

He remained calm and led Ye Qingshuang into a secluded alley, deliberately choosing a quiet spot. Ye Qingshuang followed closely behind him, her breathing rapid, clearly sensing the danger as well.

Halfway there, Lin Feng found a sheltered mountain hollow and stopped: "Let's rest for a bit before continuing."

Ye Qingshuang was already exhausted and almost collapsed. She sat down against a rock, her face pale.

The flickering firelight illuminated Ye Qingshuang's pale face. She hugged her knees, staring blankly at the flames.

"Brother Lin," she suddenly spoke, "why...why did you save me?"

"I stand up for what is right when I see injustice." Lin Feng said simply.

"But you hit Young Master Qin, they won't let you off the hook," Ye Qingshuang said worriedly.

"I know," Lin Feng poked at the fire, "but some things, once seen, cannot be ignored."

Ye Qingshuang was silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, "My parents used to say that one should be upright and honest. But they... were too upright, which offended people, and in the end..."

She didn't finish speaking, but Lin Feng understood. He looked at her; in the firelight, her eyes were filled with tears, yet she stubbornly refused to let them fall.

"I'll help you find out about your uncle's matter," Lin Feng said.

Ye Qingshuang looked up abruptly, hope igniting in her eyes: "Really?"

"Yes." Lin Feng nodded. "But you must tell me the truth. Why was your uncle arrested?"

Ye Qingshuang bit her lip and finally said, "Actually... I don't know much either. I only heard from the neighbors that my uncle bought a batch of cheap Jiangnan silk a while ago, and it sold very well. Later, the government came to investigate and said that the silk was... stolen goods from Prince Jing's traitorous party, so they arrested my uncle."

Prince Jing has betrayed the party? Lin Feng's heart skipped a beat. It's Prince Jing again.

"Where did your uncle get that batch of silk?"

"I heard it was bought from a merchant surnamed Liu. He seems to be the owner of some kind of warehouse..." Ye Qingshuang tried hard to recall.

Liu's Goods Storehouse! Lin Feng's eyes narrowed. There was indeed a connection.

"Is the owner of Liu's Goods Store named Liu Laosan?"

"It seems... to be this name." Ye Qingshuang nodded. "Brother Lin, do you know him?"

"I've heard of it." Lin Feng didn't ask any more questions.

"Brother Lin," she asked softly, "do you...have a wife?"

Lin Feng paused and looked at her.

Ye Qingshuang blushed and quickly said, "I... I was just asking casually. Someone like Brother Lin must be married, right?"

"It's done." Lin Feng nodded. "My wife is in Kaoshantun."

A fleeting hint of disappointment crossed Ye Qingshuang's eyes, but she quickly smiled and said, "Then my sister-in-law must be a virtuous woman."

Lin Feng thought of Su Wanyue and smiled slightly: "Mm."

Su Wanyue was standing anxiously at the door of the small house, looking around. When she saw Lin Feng return, her eyes lit up, and she was about to go to greet him when she saw a disheveled but still beautiful young woman following behind him. She stopped in her tracks.

"Husband..." she called softly, her gaze falling on Ye Qingshuang.

"This is Miss Ye, Ye Qingshuang," Lin Feng said to Su Wanyue.

"I met her in town. She had encountered some trouble and had nowhere to go for the time being, so I brought her back to stay for a few days."

Su Wanyue looked Ye Qingshuang up and down. Although she was disheveled, she had a scholarly air about her, unlike an ordinary village girl. Her doubts lessened, and she nodded and said, "Miss Ye, please sit down. I'll go boil some hot water for you to wash up."

"I wouldn't dare trouble you, sister..." Ye Qingshuang hurriedly said.

"No need to be polite," Su Wanyue said, and went to start a fire to boil water. She was gentle by nature and empathized with Ye Qingshuang's experience, so she quickly accepted her.

As noon approached evening, Lin Feng returned to Qingshi Town.

At midnight, all was quiet.

Lin Feng changed into dark shorts, covered his face with a black cloth, carried a rope and a knife on his back, and silently made his way to the back alley of the county government office, climbing over the wall and entering.

The prison was located in the backyard of the county government office, and a musty smell mixed with the stench of blood wafted through the air. In the distance, a light was on in a room, and the sounds of drinking and playing drinking games could be heard, presumably the jailers on night duty.

Lin Feng went around to the side of the cell, where there was a row of small iron windows, about a person's height off the ground.

He counted to the third window—room number three. He gently knocked three times on the wall beneath the iron bars.

After waiting a while, rustling sounds came from inside, and a weak voice asked, "Who...who's outside?"

Is it Zhou Fugui?

"Boss Zhou, I'm Ye Qingshuang's friend," Lin Feng said in a low voice.

"Qing Shuang?" the voice inside cried out excitedly. "She...she's here? Where is she?"

"She's fine, she's with me. Boss Zhou, how are you?"

"I...I'm not going to die yet," Zhou Fugui said, his voice filled with pain.

"Brave warrior, I beg you, take Qing Shuang with you! Go as far away as possible! Don't worry about me! Liu Laosan is in cahoots with the county magistrate; they want to kill me so they can take over my cloth shop..."

Suddenly, footsteps and the light of lanterns came from afar! It was the jailer on night patrol!

Lin Feng immediately crouched down and hid in the shadows at the base of the wall.

Two jailers carrying lanterns walked over and stopped in front of the cell.

"Damn it, this weather is freezing!" a jailer cursed.

"Just bear with it, the shift will change at dawn. By the way, that Zhou guy at number three, hasn't he confessed yet?"

"He confessed and signed the confession. But Master Liu said he can't live to see the trial. Tomorrow..."

The voice behind him was lowered, and Lin Feng couldn't hear it clearly, but the meaning was obvious—Zhou Fugui wouldn't live past tomorrow!

His mind raced. He had to rescue Zhou Fugui as soon as possible!

After the jailer had gone, he went back to the window and whispered, "Boss Zhou, listen. They'll target you tomorrow. Tonight, I'll find a way to get you out."
