Chapter 258 Iron Wall and Lonely City
"It is my duty to defend this land, and I will do my utmost," Lin Feng said.
"Hmm." Zhao Polu nodded. "You can take some capable men with you. The number should not exceed fifty. All military equipment and provisions will be prepared for you here. You will take up your post in three days."
"Yes."
After leaving the garrison commander's residence, Lin Feng did not go home but went to the military camp in the east of the city first.
Han Tao was temporarily back at the military camp for a meeting with several of his old subordinates, including Lei Bao and Yan Qing, who were at the drill ground when they saw him arrive and gathered around him.
"Foreman Lin! You're finally back!" Lei Bao shouted the loudest.
"Brother Lin, what's the situation in the south?" Han Tao asked more calmly.
Yan Qing didn't speak, she just looked at Lin Feng.
"To make a long story short," Lin Feng said, glancing at them.
"I've been promoted to General of the Cavalry and transferred to the position of Garrison Commander of Ironwall City. I'll be leaving in three days. Han Tao, you'll continue to help me in Ironwall City. Leopard, Yan Qing, you two, along with any other trusted old brothers under your command who are willing to come with me to Ironwall City, pack your things. There are fifty positions available. You have one day to decide, and report back to me by tomorrow night."
The group was taken aback. Han Tao clasped his hands in greeting first: "Brother Lin coming to guard the Iron Wall is perfect! You know my men, they all obey orders."
Lei Bao grinned, "Is that even a question? Wherever you go, Boss Lin, I, Leopard, will definitely follow!"
Yan Qing nodded: "I'll go."
"Okay." Lin Feng didn't say much more. "Go and talk to the brothers. It's voluntary, no one will be forced. I need the list tomorrow night."
"yes!"
Back home, Lin Feng told them about the transfer.
Yun Li nodded obediently: "I will do as my husband says, and I will get ready right away."
Shen Qingyi, who was tidying up the medicinal herbs, looked up when she heard this: "Brother Lin, please bring my medical tools and herbs as well. The border town will need them."
Su Wanyue whispered, "Husband, what... what can I do?"
"Follow Yun Li and help pack your valuables," Lin Feng said. "Ironwall City is bitterly cold, so prepare plenty of warm clothing."
Bai Xiaohe stood by the door and asked, "Brother Lin, is Ironwall City further north than here?"
"Yes, less than a hundred miles outside is the territory of the Di Rong people." Lin Feng looked at her.
Bai Xiaohe nodded and didn't say anything more.
On the morning of the third day, as dawn broke, several carriages were parked outside the courtyard.
Lin Feng, dressed in military uniform, stood leading his horse. Yun Li, Su Wanyue, Shen Qingyi, and Bai Xiaohe had already boarded the carriage.
At the street corner, Lei Bao, Han Tao, and Yan Qing led forty-seven valiant soldiers, mounted on horseback and with swords at their sides, standing silently awaiting orders. They were all veterans who had volunteered to go with them.
"Is everyone here?" Lin Feng's gaze swept over everyone.
"All together!" Lei Bao shouted.
"Set off!"
The wheels turned, and the horses' hooves clattered.
The group left the small courtyard in the west of Shuofeng City, crossed the still-sleeping streets, exited the north gate, and slowly headed northeast toward the border town called "Iron Wall".
Lin Feng turned around and glanced at the blurry outline of Shuofeng City in the morning mist, then turned back and looked ahead.
A new frontier, a new battlefield, awaits.
The carriages and horses traveled across the wilderness for two days. The further northeast they went, the more desolate the terrain became.
On the afternoon of the third day, the outline of a city appeared on the horizon.
"We've arrived." Han Tao rode closer to Lin Feng and pointed ahead.
"The city wall was rebuilt thirty years ago with black mountain stone. When the Di Rong arrows hit it, they only leave a white dot. It's just that the place is small. There are less than three thousand soldiers and civilians living in the city. Most of the troops are scattered in a few forts and beacon towers outside the city."
Lin Feng nodded, his gaze sweeping over the outer perimeter of the city wall.
About a mile from the city wall, there are some low earthen houses and shacks scattered around, which are temporary resting places for border residents who depend on the city for survival and for passing caravans. At this moment, they look quite deserted.
Further away, there were several buildings that were clearly Tunpu (fortified villages), with smoke rising from their chimneys.
"How have things been lately?" Lin Feng asked.
"Things aren't peaceful." Han Tao's expression was grave. "Since the death of our former garrison commander Chen, the lads from the Black Wolf and White Deer tribes have made several attempts to probe the city. Small groups of cavalry often loiter around twenty or thirty miles outside the city, specifically targeting lone patrols and supply convoys."
"Any movement from Feng Kun's side?"
"There's no definite news yet. But the Black Wolf tribe's recent harassment tactics have become more cunning than before, as if they're more familiar with our deployment and patrol patterns," Han Tao said.
The garrison headquarters is located in the center of the city. It is a small two-courtyard building with gray walls and black tiles.
Everyone dismounted from their carriages and horses. Yun Li, Su Wanyue, Shen Qingyi, and Bai Xiaohe followed the maid who led the way into the inner courtyard to settle in.
The main hall of the garrison was equally simple, with a map of the border region hanging in the center and weapons racks on both sides holding some swords and spears. Documents and files were piled on the desk.
Han Tao brought out a black lacquered wooden box from the back room, opened it, and inside were the copper seal of the Iron Wall City garrison and a well-worn border map.
"Commander Lin, here is the official seal and the latest border map. These are military intelligence reports, supply lists, and troop rosters for the past three months."
Han Tao pushed the wooden box and several stacks of documents in front of Lin Feng. "The seal is here. The handover of defenses is here. Please inspect it, Commander Lin."
Lin Feng didn't rush to accept the seal. Instead, he picked up the roll of border defense map, unfolded it, and laid it on the desk.
The map was drawn in great detail, marking the mountains, rivers, roads, fortresses, beacon towers, and the approximate activity range of the known Di-Rong tribes within a hundred miles of Iron Wall City.
"From today onwards, you will be the deputy garrison commander of Ironwall City, assisting me in handling all military affairs. You have done a good job in your previous duties for now," Lin Feng said.
Han Tao was taken aback, then clasped his hands in a fist salute, his voice slightly choked: "Commander Xie Lin trusts me! Han Tao will do his utmost!"
"Go about your business. In one hour, summon all officers of the rank of squad leader and above for a meeting."
"Yes!" Han Tao left.
"Brother Lin." Bai Xiaohe appeared out of nowhere and stood under the eaves. "It's colder here than in the north wind."
"Hmm. It's harsh and cold at the border, you'll get used to it." Lin Feng looked at her, "Is the accommodation alright? Tell Yun Li if you need anything."
"That's good." Bai Xiaohe paused for a moment. "If there's anything I can do to help, Brother Lin, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Yes, I will." Lin Feng nodded.
Bai Xiaohe's skills might actually come in handy at the border.
An hour later, a dozen officers, all of whom were at least captains, stood in the hall.
Most of them had rough, rugged faces, bearing the marks of the frontier's winds and sands. Their gazes toward Lin Feng were a mixture of curiosity, scrutiny, and a hint of disdain—after all, Lin Feng looked too young.
Lin Feng stood behind the desk and, without wasting words, said directly: "My name is Lin Feng, the newly appointed garrison commander of Ironwall City. Without further ado, here's the gist: Defending the territory is our responsibility; as long as we are here, the city stands. From today onward, the old rules will remain, but there are a few new regulations."
Then he read out several new orders.
"Understood!" the officers replied in unison, their voices echoing throughout the hall.
The officers saluted and withdrew, many of them looking more relaxed—this new garrison commander seemed to be decisive and capable, and aware of the difficulties of border affairs.
Outside the window, the sky finally darkened completely, and fine snowflakes began to fall, pattering softly against the window paper.
And so began the first night in Ironwall City.
In the inner courtyard, Yun Li and Shen Qingyi had already tidied up their living quarters, with Su Wanyue helping them. A charcoal brazier was lit inside, making it fairly warm.
"This house is a bit old, but it's quite sturdy," Yun Li said gently to Su Wanyue. "Don't mind, little sister. Stay here for now, and we'll add whatever you need later."
"Sister, what are you saying? I'm already very content with having a roof over my head," Su Wanyue quickly replied.
Shen Qingyi carefully placed the medicinal herbs she had brought into the side room, which she had already set up as a simple medicine room. Bai Xiaohe was in her room, staring at the flickering flame of an oil lamp, lost in thought.
In the outer courtyard, the soldiers had settled down, eating hot soup dumplings and chatting in hushed tones. Lei Bao and Yan Qing returned to the house after checking the sentry posts.
