Chapter 261: First Glimpse of Talent
As the distance closed, the situation gradually became clear.
Below Eagle's Beak Rock, about twenty or thirty Di Rong cavalrymen dressed in variegated leather robes and wielding curved swords were fiercely attacking the entrance to the cliff where the beacon tower was located.
At the entrance, several Yan soldiers relied on simple wooden fences and rocks to fight desperately. Several corpses lay on the ground, some of them Yan soldiers and others of the Di Rong tribe.
A few arrows were still being shot down from the beacon tower on the cliff top, but there were clearly not enough people to carry them, so the threat was not great.
The Di Rong people clearly wanted a quick victory and launched a fierce offensive. Judging from their attire and tactics, they seemed to be from the Black Wolf tribe.
"Prepare the bows and crossbows!" Lin Feng drew his bow and nocked an arrow on horseback, aiming at a Di Rong leader who was waving a scimitar and shouting orders.
"Spread out, flank from both sides, shoot the horses!"
"yes!"
The fifty riders quickly split into three teams. Lin Feng led twenty men to charge straight into the enemy's front, while Lei Bao and Yan Qing each led fifteen men to flank from the left and right sides.
"Release the arrows!"
At Lin Feng's command, the arrow in his hand was the first to leave the bowstring, shooting straight at the Di Rong leader like a meteor!
Hearing the whooshing sound, the leader turned around in alarm, but it was too late to dodge. The arrow pierced his chest with a "thud," and he screamed as he fell from his horse.
Almost simultaneously, arrows rained down from both flanks like locusts, densely striking the Di Rong people's warhorses!
At such close range, and with the arrows coming in volleys, seven or eight warhorses were immediately struck by arrows, rearing up with screams and throwing their riders to the ground! The Di Rong people's formation was thrown into chaos instantly.
"Kill!" Lin Feng drew his long sword and charged into the enemy ranks! As the sword flashed, a Di Rong warrior who had just reined in his frightened warhorse was cleaved off his horse, sword and all.
Lei Bao was like a tiger descending from the mountain, wielding a heavy iron sledgehammer. Wherever he went, bones broke and tendons snapped, and no one could stop him.
Yan Qing moved nimbly through the chaotic army, his twin blades flashing like silver light as he ruthlessly slashed at the enemy's throat and wrists.
Fifty elite Yan cavalrymen followed closely behind, like red-hot iron plows, fiercely plundering into the chaotic Di Rong formation.
They use bows and crossbows for long-range shooting, and swords and spears for close combat, all with excellent teamwork.
The Di Rong people were already few in number, and this surprise attack caused them to lose the initiative, resulting in heavy casualties. The remaining dozen or so people shouted and turned their horses to flee to the northeastern wilderness.
"Chase them! Capture them alive if possible!" Lin Feng reined in his horse and shouted.
Even if we can't wipe them all out, we should at least capture a few prisoners to find out the truth.
Lei Bao and Yan Qing, leading more than twenty riders, roared after them. Lin Feng, on the other hand, led the remaining men, dismounted, and went to check the situation below Eagle Beak Rock.
Of the five soldiers stationed at the beacon tower, two were killed, one was seriously wounded, and two were slightly wounded. The seriously wounded man had been stabbed in the chest and was bleeding profusely; he was clearly not going to survive. The slightly wounded men helped each other up, their eyes filled with tears of gratitude towards Lin Feng and the others.
"What's going on? How many Di Rong people are there? When did they attack?" Lin Feng asked in a deep voice.
A young soldier with blood on his face gasped, "Reporting to the garrison commander, around midnight, they suddenly came up from the north, no less than thirty riders. We didn't have time to retreat all of us back to the cliff, so we held them off from below... Their attack was fierce, it seemed... it seemed like they were specifically targeting the beacon towers."
"Specifically targeting beacon towers?" Lin Feng's eyes turned cold.
Beacon towers are the eyes of the border; removing them is tantamount to blinding the surveillance of the area. What are the Di Rong people trying to do? Clear the way for a larger-scale operation later?
Did they speak? Was there anything unusual about them?
Another soldier thought for a moment: "They... it seems like someone shouted something in Chinese... I couldn't hear clearly, something like... 'Quick battle and quick resolution'? Yes, that's it, the tone was a bit strange."
Mandarin? A swift and decisive battle? Lin Feng's heart skipped a beat. Could there really be Han Chinese mixed in, perhaps even in command?
At this moment, Lei Bao and Yan Qing returned with their men, with three Di Rong prisoners tied tightly behind their horses. All of them were injured and were glaring angrily, cursing incoherently.
"Seven or eight escaped, we caught these three." Lei Bao wiped the blood from his face and grinned. "These bastards sure ran fast!"
"Take him back and interrogate him carefully." Lin Feng mounted his horse.
"Ten men will remain to assist in repairing the beacon towers and escort the wounded and their remains back to the city. The rest of you, return to the city!"
When they returned to Ironwall City, it was nearly dawn.
The snow stopped, and the eastern sky began to lighten with the first hint of dawn. Han Tao, seeing Lin Feng and the others return safely, visibly relaxed and immediately ordered the city gates to be opened.
"How's the battle going?" Han Tao asked as he approached.
"Di Rong, with about thirty riders, launched a surprise attack on Eagle Beak Rock, but we repelled them, beheading fifteen and capturing three. Our army suffered two dead and one seriously wounded who succumbed to his injuries."
Lin Feng said briefly, his tone cold, "The prisoners are yours to interrogate separately. Make sure you find out their purpose for this operation, who commanded them, and whether they had any inside agents. In particular, find out if any of them can speak Chinese, or... if any of them look like Han Chinese."
Han Tao's expression hardened: "Understood!"
Lin Feng then said to Lei Bao and Yan Qing, "Take the brothers back to camp to rest, treat the wounded, and take stock of the losses. In the afternoon, all officers of the rank of squad leader and above will hold a meeting in the main hall."
"yes!"
After making the arrangements, Lin Feng dragged his tired body back to the garrison headquarters.
The lights in the inner courtyard were still on. Yun Li and the others had clearly not slept. When they saw him return covered in blood and his armor stained with dust, they all gathered around him.
"Husband, are you alright?" Yun Li asked anxiously, looking him over.
"It's alright, it's all enemy blood," Lin Feng reassured them, then looked at them, "Are you all alright?"
"We're fine, we're just very worried." Su Wanyue's eyes were a little red.
Shen Qingyi had silently brought over hot water and a clean towel. Bai Xiaohe stood a little distance away, her gaze lingering on the bloodstains on his body for a moment before moving away.
"I'm fine, you can all go and rest. After dawn, you can go about your business as usual, but don't leave the manor unless absolutely necessary."
Lin Feng took the cloth and wiped his face.
"I'll go heat up some food for my husband," Yun Li said, heading towards the kitchen.
"No need, I'm not hungry, I just need to rest for a while. You guys go to sleep."
Lin Feng waved his hand, persuading them all to return to their rooms before entering himself. He removed his blood-stained leather armor and collapsed onto the bed, fully clothed. He was physically exhausted, but his mind was unusually clear.
Lin Feng rested for only an hour before getting up and summoning Han Tao to inquire about the interrogation results.
"The three prisoners were stubborn, saying they were ordered by the Black Wolf tribe's commander to cut off our signal fires and destroy our sight and hearing. They all claimed to know nothing about the matter of speaking Chinese."
Han Tao's expression was grim. "We only managed to extract this much through torture. But we found this on them."
Han Tao handed over a piece of leather about half the size of his palm, its edges charred. On it were simple drawings made of charcoal, seemingly depicting the terrain around Eagle's Beak Rock, with several markings and two blurry Chinese characters that appeared to be "Speed" and "Clear".
"Clear the obstacles and finish this quickly?" Lin Feng stared at the leather.
"It seems they do have follow-up plans. Continue the interrogation. Order that twenty more soldiers be added to each of the eastern and western fortresses, and that they be on guard day and night. Also, send two teams of shrewd scouts disguised as hunters to sneak thirty miles northeast toward the Black Wolf tribe. They need not engage in battle, but only to scout for any signs of a large force gathering."
"yes!"
In the afternoon, a meeting was held in the main hall. All the officers who participated in the battle last night were present. Lin Feng explained the situation and readjusted the troop strength and patrol shifts in each defense zone, especially strengthening early warning at night and in inclement weather.
Knowing the gravity of the situation, all the officers solemnly accepted the order.
After the discussion, Lin Feng thought of Xie Wanqing. Her background was unknown, and she had just appeared during this turbulent time. He decided to investigate further.
Upon arriving at the west wing room, the guards at the door bowed.
Inside the room, Xie Wanqing was leaning against the headboard, reading a thin book by the light of the window. When she saw Lin Feng come in, she put down the book and was about to get up.
"Miss Xie is injured, there's no need for you to get up." Lin Feng sat down at the table. "Are you feeling better today?"
