Chapter 267 Capturing a spy on a snowy night
Almost simultaneously, from behind the surrounding rocks and in the shadows of the mine, seven or eight dark figures sprang out, their blades flashing, and pounced on the three!
"An ambush!" The Di Rong man reacted extremely quickly, lunging forward to avoid the iron mace, then drawing his curved sword from his waist and sweeping it backward!
He was agile and incredibly strong; his scimitar drew a bright arc, forcing back two Yan soldiers who rushed at him.
Feng An and another Han Chinese also drew their short swords, stood back to back, and fought fiercely with the surrounding Yan army.
Feng An was skilled, wielding a ruthless short knife, specializing in attacks on the lower body. The other man was agile, as if he had practiced light-body techniques, dodging left and right amidst the encirclement.
"Don't let a single one escape!" Lei Bao roared, wielding his iron mace like a windmill, relentlessly entangling the Di Rong man.
The Di Rong people, wielding fierce and powerful curved swords, clashed head-on with Lei Bao, sparks flying. However, the Yan army had a numerical advantage and coordinated attacks, and soon two soldiers' swords struck the Di Rong people's left arm and right leg, not fatally, but enough to momentarily stun them.
Just then, a short scream and the clash of weapons suddenly came from the outer perimeter! Immediately following was Yan Qing's sharp shout: "Stop them! There are reinforcements outside the ditch!"
Just then, five or six masked men in black rushed in from the direction of the ditch, wielding sharp blades, and charged towards Woniu Stone, attempting to support Di Rongren and Feng An! They were clearly sentries lying in ambush on the outskirts!
"Yan Qing! Block them!" Lei Bao shouted, increasing the force of his iron mace and smashing it down on the heads of the Di Rong people with a powerful blow.
The Di Rong man raised his sword to parry, but with a loud clang, the curved sword sank downwards. Lei Bao seized the opportunity and kicked him in the stomach. The Di Rong man groaned and staggered backward.
On the other side, upon seeing reinforcements, Feng An's spirits lifted, and his short sword became even more ruthless. He managed to stab a Yan soldier in the arm, tearing a gap in the blade, and charged towards the reinforcements.
"Trying to run?" A Yan army soldier who was lying in ambush on the flank had been watching him for a long time. When he saw him trying to escape, he suddenly threw the short spear in his hand!
The short spear flew like lightning. Feng An heard the ominous wind and hurriedly dodged. The spear tip grazed his ribs, spraying blood.
Feng An groaned in pain, but without stopping, he scrambled and crawled toward the men in black who were there to meet him.
"Fire the arrows!" Yan Qing shouted from the outside.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh!" Several crossbow bolts shot towards the black-clad men who were providing backup from different directions. At such close range, and with such a surprise attack, three men were immediately hit by arrows and fell to the ground.
But the remaining three were fearless, wielding their weapons to deflect the arrows and rejoining Feng An. They also met up with the wounded Di Rong man and another Han man. Together, they charged desperately toward the mouth of the ditch.
"Hold them off! Don't let a single one escape!" Lei Bao's eyes were bloodshot as he led his men in hot pursuit. Yan Qing also ordered the ambush troops on the outer perimeter to tighten the encirclement.
A fierce battle erupted on the snow-covered ground. Swords clashed, and blood and flesh flew everywhere.
The Di Rong people were fierce, and the men in black were desperate, but the Yan army's ambush troops, taking advantage of the terrain and numbers, and being well-prepared, gradually gained the upper hand. Men in black continued to fall, and the Di Rong man was stabbed in the leg again, his movements becoming increasingly sluggish. Feng An's ribs bled profusely, and his face was deathly pale.
Just as they were about to annihilate these people, suddenly, the Di Rong man let out a mournful howl, like the howl of a wolf, which carried far into the silent snowy night.
He's calling for more reinforcements!
"Quickly finish this!" Lei Bao's heart tightened, and he smashed his iron hammer, knocking away a black-clad man blocking his way, along with his knife, before rushing straight at the Di Rong man.
Just then, outside Laoguagou, in the darkness in the distance, dozens of torches suddenly lit up! The lights moved quickly toward the mouth of the gully, and the sound of horses' hooves rolled like muffled thunder, numbering no less than fifty or sixty riders!
There really was a large team providing support!
"Damn it! We've fallen for their trap! They have a backup plan!" Lei Bao's eyes were bloodshot.
"Lei Bao! Yan Qing! Retreat! Follow the second plan and retreat deeper into the trench!"
Lin Feng's voice suddenly came from a mine entrance to the side and behind, calm and decisive. He had actually come in person, and even brought ten personal guards as a reserve force!
"Defend!" Lei Bao shouted urgently.
"Execute the order! Take the prisoners and the wounded and retreat to Mine No. 3! Hurry!" Lin Feng shouted, while drawing his bow and shooting down the nearest enemy cavalryman.
Without further hesitation, Lei Bao and Yan Qing ordered their soldiers to lift the wounded Di Rongren and Feng An, and retreat while fighting, towards a pre-selected, easily defensible abandoned mine shaft in the ravine.
Lin Feng led his personal guards to cover the rear, their arrows hitting their mark every time, temporarily halting the pursuers.
The group retreated into the mine. The entrance was small, but the interior was quite deep, with many branching passages.
Lin Feng had soldiers familiar with the terrain lead the way, quickly venturing deeper into the area, and set up tripwires and simple traps at several key forks in the road.
Finally, they stopped in a relatively spacious cave with multiple exits to set up defenses.
The Di Rong cavalry outside the ditch had already rushed into it. Under the torchlight, about sixty or seventy riders could be seen, all dressed in black and masked. Judging from their horsemanship and attire, they seemed to be the elite of the Black Wolf tribe.
They chased the mine to the entrance, but seeing that the entrance was narrow and the inside was dark and unclear, they dared not venture in. Instead, they surrounded the entrance, shouting and cursing.
"Boss Lin, what do we do now? We're stuck in this rat hole!" Lei Bao panted heavily, with several more wounds on his body.
Lin Feng examined the Di Rong prisoner's injuries. The knife wound on his leg was quite deep, and he had lost a lot of blood, but he wouldn't die anytime soon. Feng An had been wounded in the ribs by a short spear and had lost too much blood, so he was already in a semi-conscious state.
"They dare not launch a direct assault. This mine is interconnected; a direct assault would be suicide," Lin Feng said in a deep voice.
"But they outnumber us. If we stay surrounded, we'll run out of food and water and it'll be our death. We have to break out under cover of night."
"How do we break through? There are at least sixty or seventy riders outside, along with archers." Yan Qing frowned.
Lin Feng walked to the vicinity of the cave entrance and listened intently to the sounds outside. The Di Rong people were clearly discussing their strategy, their shouts echoing throughout.
His gaze swept across the cave, suddenly landing on the old, discarded timber and the scattered, dark-colored ore.
"Lei Bao, take a few men to that side road and see if there are any of those... dark-colored stones that crumble easily when squeezed, the more the better." Lin Feng pointed to a side road.
Although Lei Bao didn't understand why, he still led his men there. Before long, they returned with a large pile of black, loose stones.
"This is...coal?" Han Tao leaned closer to take a look.
"Hmm, and it's the kind that's prone to spontaneous combustion." Lin Feng grabbed a piece, rubbed it in his hand, and it turned into black powder.
"Yan Qing, take some dry wood and scraps of cloth, mix them with this coal powder, and make several large balls. Also, find some tough vines."
Although puzzled, everyone immediately did as instructed. Soon, several large balls were made, bound together with vines and filled with coal powder and tinder.
"The garrison commander, this is going to..." Han Tao seemed to understand something.
"Fire attack. But not to attack people, but to attack horses and create chaos." Lin Feng looked at the flickering firelight outside the cave.
"Once midnight has passed, the men and horses will be exhausted and their vigilance will be at its lowest. On my command, light these fireballs and throw them specifically at the areas where the horses are gathered and where the torches are most numerous. The coal dust ignites instantly, creating explosions and smoke that will startle the horses. In the chaos, we'll split up and escape through different exits along the side paths. Remember, disperse and agree to meet back at where the horses are tied. If you get separated, find your own way back to the city!"
"Understood!"
The group prepared silently, checking the bows and arrows and giving the wounds simple bandages.
The Di Rong people outside the cave seemed to be getting impatient and began shooting arrows into the cave. The arrows stung the cave walls but could not penetrate deeply.
About half an hour later, the noise outside the cave seemed to have subsided, and the torchlight flickered. Midnight had passed, the darkest and coldest time before dawn.
"Get ready," Lin Feng whispered.
Several strong soldiers picked up rattan balls soaked in kerosene and coated with coal dust, and lit them over a torch. The rattan balls quickly burst into flames, crackling and emitting thick smoke.
"Throw!"
"Huff! Huff! Huff!"
Several large, blazing fireballs, accompanied by a whooshing sound, were hurled out of the mine entrance, tracing several arcs as they crashed into the area outside the mine where the Di Rong people were most densely gathered and where the most torches were!
"What is that?!"
"Be careful!"
