Chapter 334 The Connection
The team set off again.
Along the way, they encountered two small groups of Black Wolf Guard cavalry, but they were able to get away with them by pretending to be "one of their own" and speaking the Di Rong language fluently.
Lin Feng even managed to extract some information about the deployment and recent movements of the Burte camp from a drunken quartermaster—the main force was indeed concentrated under Iron Wall City, leaving the rear relatively undefended.
As dusk fell, they finally crossed the last hill, and a vast grassland covered with thick snow opened up before them. On the distant horizon, they could vaguely see the outlines of tents and wisps of smoke rising from them—it was a medium-sized Di Rong tribe camp. Judging from the flags, it was not directly under the Black Wolf tribe, but rather a small tribe that was subordinate to Boerte.
"Go around to the north. Avoid all the camps," Lin Feng ordered. They were currently disguised as Black Wolf Guards, and passing through the dependent tribes shouldn't be a problem, but unexpected complications were inevitable.
As night fell, they found a sheltered, half-collapsed abandoned shepherd's stone hut and decided to spend the night there.
"Guards, according to the markings left by Old Ghost, they should be heading towards White Wolf Valley."
"The last message Urna sent was from 'Black Stone Ravine,' fifty miles southeast of the old mine."
There might be traces of Yan Qing in White Wolf Valley, and Black Stone Ravine is Urna's designated contact point. The people from Linglong Pavilion headed straight for White Wolf Valley, indicating that they were either looking for Yan Qing or believed that the entrance to the underground palace was nearby.
"We'll split into two groups tomorrow," Lin Feng decided. "Amur, you take four men and continue following Old Ghost's markings to track the three from Linglong Pavilion. If you find Yan Qing, try to make contact and inform him of our location and plan."
The scout Amur, whose name had been called, nodded emphatically: "Yes!"
"The rest of you, come with me to Black Rock Ravine to meet up with Urna," Lin Feng said, looking at the others.
"Understood!" the Night Watchers replied in a low voice.
The road to Black Stone Ravine was more difficult than expected.
As darkness fell, they had to find a relatively safe place to spend the night before nightfall.
"Look! There's a fire ahead!" Night Watchman, who was walking at the front, suddenly exclaimed and pointed to a valley to the right that was surrounded by two low hills.
Lin Feng stared intently, and sure enough, in the deepening twilight and snow, deep within the valley, a few faint, flickering lights shone through. They weren't campfires, but rather... torches? And there was more than one!
Are they a Black Wolf Guard patrol? Or a Shadow Wolf stronghold? Or... are they Urna's people?
"Stay hidden, get closer and scout," Lin Feng gestured to the others.
Approaching the valley entrance, Lin Feng lay prone behind a snow slope, carefully parting the withered grass to look down.
The valley was small, gourd-shaped. Deep within, at the foot of a sheltered mountain wall, were indeed several low huts hastily constructed from branches and animal hides. In front of the huts burned several small campfires, around which about twenty people sat, talking quietly and eating. These people… were dressed haphazardly, unlike the regular Black Wolf Guard; their fur coats were worn, and their weapons were a motley collection—scimitars, hunting forks, and even wooden clubs.
Were they herdsmen? Or... tribal warriors who rebelled against Burte?
Lin Feng's gaze swept quickly across the area, and suddenly, a figure with her back to him, cutting jerky with a dagger beside one of the campfires, made his heart leap. That figure, that familiar movement—it was Urna!
Found them! Lin Feng felt a sense of relief, but then his heart tightened again. The presence of Urna meant this camp was likely a temporary stronghold of the resistance forces she had contacted. However, judging by the number of people, there were only about twenty, a significant disparity in strength.
Suddenly, from the direction of the entrance on the other side of the valley came the sound of rapid hoofbeats and shouts! In the firelight, a group of about ten Black Wolf Guard cavalrymen, carrying torches, were galloping towards the valley! Judging from the direction, it seemed they were on patrol and had discovered the fire!
"Enemy attack!" In the valley, Urna was the first to jump up, shouting a warning in the Di Rong language.
The others also grabbed their weapons, but their faces showed panic.
The Black Wolf Guards had clearly spotted the people in the valley as well, letting out excited howls and charging forward, their scimitars gleaming coldly in the firelight.
"Get ready to make your move!" Lin Feng's eyes turned cold as he whispered to the four night watchmen behind him.
However, a sudden change occurred!
From behind the snowdrifts on either side of the valley entrance, the twang of bowstrings suddenly rang out! Seven or eight crossbow bolts, like venomous snakes spitting their tongues, shot out from extremely tricky angles, accurately piercing the faces and throats of the Black Wolf Guards charging at the forefront! Amid screams, men and horses fell to the ground!
Immediately afterwards, several dark figures sprang up from the snow like ghosts, pouncing on the panicked remaining Black Wolf Guards! Blades flashed, blood splattered! The movements were lightning fast and ruthless!
In just a few breaths, all ten Black Wolf Guards lay dead in pools of blood, without even having time to fire the alarm arrow!
The battle began suddenly and ended even faster. In the valley, Urna and the resistance fighters stared in disbelief at the scene before them.
The dark figures dealt with the enemies and then gathered together. By the light of the campfire, Lin Feng could see clearly that it was Amur and the other four people he had sent to track down Linglong Pavilion! They were actually here! And they had even rescued Urna!
Amur walked up to Urna, who was still somewhat dazed, and quickly said a few words in Dirong language.
Lin Feng also stood up and led everyone over.
When Urna saw him, her grey-blue eyes suddenly lit up in the firelight, and her face instantly lit up with unbelievable surprise and relief. She immediately said a few words to the people around her, and then ran quickly towards the snow slope where Lin Feng and the others were hiding without hesitation.
"You...you guys are here?! And you even saved..." Urna rushed forward, breathless, her face still covered in cigarette ash, but her eyes shone brightly.
"It's a long story." Lin Feng nodded to Amur, who had come to report, indicating that he had done a good job, then looked at Urna, "It's good that you're alright. Any news about Yan Qing?"
Urna calmed her agitated emotions: "We didn't find any trace of Yan Qing near the royal court..."
"It's cold outside, let's go inside and talk in detail. Amur, you guys come too, tell us about your tracking."
