Chapter 354 Wilderness Game
A hail of arrows rained down. Lin Feng used the grave mounds and tombstones for cover, and although he was disheveled, he was unharmed.
But he also discovered that the Shadowless Pavilion's sentries had silently approached without him noticing.
Lin Feng fought and retreated, leading Ling Aoyun to the area where the Shadowless Pavilion's sentries were most concentrated.
A three-way battle erupted amidst the desolate graveyard. The crossbow bolts fired by the Ling family's assassins, the darts thrown by the Shadowless Pavilion's assassins, and Lin Feng's precise counterattacks brought this dead land back to life.
"Pfft!"
A crossbow bolt pierced the throat of one of Ling Aoyun's trusted henchmen. Immediately afterward, a dark shadow fell from the treetop, aiming straight for Ling Aoyun's back!
"Old dog, prepare to die!" The shadowy figure's voice was hoarse; it was none other than the Shadowless Pavilion assassin who had previously appeared in Black Wind Cave.
Ling Aoyun was shocked and hurriedly parried with his sword.
In that instant, Lin Feng seized the opportunity and hurled his sword!
"clang!"
The sword slammed heavily onto the back of Ling Aoyun's blade, the immense force causing Ling Aoyun's tiger's mouth to split open, and his warhorse reared up with a neigh.
Taking advantage of the situation, Lin Feng rolled several times and disappeared into a dry riverbed, vanishing into the depths of the night.
Ling Aoyun steadied his warhorse, howling angrily, but dared not venture any further.
The assassins from the Shadowless Pavilion vanished into the darkness like ghosts.
The official road leads towards Iron Wall City.
A mule cart with blue curtains moved slowly through the night. Bai Xiaohe sat on the cart shaft, her eyes cold and aloof, but her ears constantly listening for any sounds behind her.
Inside the car, Su Xuanji leaned against the soft cushions, her face still as pale as paper. She was staring at the cold shard in her hand, using the dim light filtering in from the car window.
"Miss Bai," Su Xuanji suddenly spoke.
"What is it?" Bai Xiaohe didn't turn around, her hand on the hilt of her sword.
Su Xuanji struggled to sit up straight. "Here, take this."
Bai Xiaohe finally turned around, frowning: "What do you mean by this?"
"Lin Feng covered our retreat. He risked his life to get this fragment."
Su Xuanji stuffed the oilcloth bundle into Bai Xiaohe's hand, her eyes resolute. "If I die, or if the mule cart is robbed, you must destroy it. It must never be allowed to be obtained by Ling Aoyun or the Shadowless Pavilion."
Bai Xiaohe gripped the oilcloth bag tightly, looking at Su Xuanji's pale face. For the first time, she saw a resoluteness in this seemingly fragile woman that was no less than that of Lin Feng.
"I won't let it fall into the enemy's hands." Bai Xiaohe's voice was still cold, but with a hint of murderous intent.
Just then, a row of torches suddenly lit up in the darkness of the official road ahead.
A troop of cavalrymen dressed in Black Wolf Guard uniforms but carrying strange flags blocked the middle of the road.
He is neither one of Ling Aoyun's people nor the Shadowless Pavilion.
Bai Xiaohe squinted and saw the pattern on the flag clearly—a black wolf with a broken horn, with the four large characters "Grey Fox Tribe" written below.
"They're remnants of Burte's faction." Bai Xiaohe sneered, drawing her short sword from her waist. "Looks like there are quite a few people trying to take advantage of the situation."
Su Xuanji took a deep breath, forced herself to sit up straight, and slid a small, spring-loaded hidden weapon from her sleeve. She whispered, "Miss Bai, let's break out."
"Drivers, leave your toll!" the leader shouted, his voice hoarse, the dagger in his hand gleaming greasy in the firelight.
The dozens of cavalrymen behind him burst into laughter, their lewd gazes sweeping over the mule cart and Bai Xiaohe.
Bai Xiaohe's face was as cold as ice as she uttered two words: "Get out of here."
"Oh ho? A fiery little wench, huh!" The leader grinned, revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth. "Brothers, take her! The one in this car is probably some valuable stuff!"
At a command, dozens of cavalrymen spurred their mounts forward, brandishing their swords and spears. The dust kicked up by their hooves instantly shrouded the official road.
Inside the mule cart, Su Xuanji leaned against the wall, the wound on her left arm reopening due to the sudden stop of the cart, causing excruciating pain.
She lifted a corner of the carriage curtain and saw Bai Xiaohe, like a streak of blue lightning, rushing towards the three cavalrymen charging at the front.
The sword flashed, streaking across the night like a bolt of lightning.
"Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!"
Three heads shot into the sky, while the headless corpse, still riding a horse, ran a few steps before collapsing to the ground with a thud.
The remaining troops, stunned by this thunderous attack, reined in their horses and refused to advance. Their leader, both shocked and enraged, roared, "Damn it! He's got a tough customer! Fire! Fire!"
A hail of arrows rained down on Bai Xiaohe.
Bai Xiaohe moved swiftly, her short sword dancing into a curtain of light. The crisp sounds of "clanging" filled the air as all the arrows were deflected, but she was forced to retreat repeatedly, almost falling into the ditch beside the road.
At this critical moment!
"Whoosh—!"
A black crossbow bolt shot out from the darkness on the side of the official road!
The leader panicked.
"Die!" Bai Xiaohe's short sword shot out like a venomous snake, aiming straight for the leader's throat.
The leader was terrified and hurriedly tried to block with the back of his sword. But Bai Xiaohe's sword strike was a feint. With a flick of her wrist, the sword slashed downwards, a flash of cold light, and the leader and his horse were ripped open!
With their commander dead, the remaining troops were thrown into chaos and scattered in all directions.
Bai Xiaohe didn't chase after them; instead, she looked in the direction from which the crossbow bolt had come.
From the darkness, a tall figure slowly emerged. He wore a tattered wolf-skin cloak, and a hideous scar on his face made his otherwise ordinary features appear exceptionally fierce. In his hand he carried a strangely shaped repeating crossbow; he was the one who had fired the arrow just now.
"Grey Fox Division, Golden Fox Guard, Batel," the scarred man said in broken Chinese, his gaze sweeping over Bai Xiaohe and Su Xuanji behind her. "You... are Lin Feng's men?"
Bai Xiaohe shielded Su Xuanji behind her, her short sword held across her chest, and coldly said, "So what if it is?"
Batel grinned, revealing uneven, yellow teeth: "Don't be nervous, you little wench. If I wanted to kill you, that arrow just now would have pierced your head."
He put away his crossbow, clasped his hands, and gave a strange Di Rong military salute: "That dog scoundrel, Boerte, is dead, but his remnants are still wreaking havoc on the grasslands. I, Batel, am not that kind of ungrateful scum."
Bai Xiaohe remained vigilant, but her sword strikes slowed slightly.
Su Xuanji spoke weakly inside the car, "How...how can you prove it?"
Batel pointed to the scar on his face: "Lin Feng saved me."
He paused, glancing at the corpses and bloodstains on the ground: "This area isn't safe. There are many more remnants like these idiots roaming around. You two women, one seriously injured, and the other... though strong, won't get very far."
Batel turned around and pointed back the way he came: "My camp is just twenty miles away. There are doctors, water, and fast horses that can take you to Ironwall City. Come with me. Lin Feng's woman shouldn't die in this ditch."
Bai Xiaohe turned and glanced at Su Xuanji. Su Xuanji's face was pale, but she nodded firmly.
"Lead the way." Bai Xiaohe sheathed her sword, her voice still cold, but she had already tacitly agreed to Batel's suggestion.
Batel laughed and turned to lead the way.
