Chapter 48 First Steps into the Elite Camp
The gate of the elite troops' camp was far more imposing than the small shed at the Yong'anmen night patrol post.
The towering iron-clad wooden gate, over ten feet high, was tightly shut. On either side stood arrow towers, guarded by soldiers with bows at their sides. A large banner bearing the words "Elite Warriors" fluttered in the night wind atop the gate tower. Two enormous stone lions stood in the open space in front of the gate, adding to the somber atmosphere.
As Lin Feng approached the gate, the guards immediately blocked his way with their spears, shouting sternly, "Who goes there? This is a military camp, no unauthorized personnel allowed!"
Lin Feng remained calm, took out his waist token and documents, handed them over, and said in a deep voice, "Lin Feng, a newly recruited soldier, reporting for duty."
The soldier took the waist tag and documents, examined them carefully by the light from under the gate tower, and then looked Lin Feng up and down a few times. He saw that although Lin Feng was wearing an ill-fitting old uniform, he was tall and straight with calm eyes, unlike a spy. His expression softened slightly, and he said to the man next to him, "Go and inform Officer Han that the new recruit Lin Feng has arrived."
A moment later, a small door on the side of the camp gate opened, and a middle-aged officer in leather armor with a stern face stepped out—it was Officer Han. He glanced at Lin Feng, then at the documents, a barely perceptible look of understanding flashing in his eyes, and said calmly, "Follow me."
Lin Feng followed Officer Han into the military camp. The camp was brightly lit and covered a vast area. Rows of barracks were neatly arranged, and in the distance, soldiers seemed to be training all night on the drill ground. Shouts, footsteps, and the clash of weapons were heard incessantly. The air was filled with the smell of sweat, leather, and a unique, rugged atmosphere that belonged to the military camp.
Officer Han led Lin Feng to a row of barracks and pointed to one of them, saying, "You'll stay in this room, bunk number seven (C)." The camp rules are: roll call at 5:00 AM for drills, breakfast at 7:00 AM, then individual training, dinner at 5:00 PM, and lights out at 9:00 PM. No unauthorized departures from the camp, no fighting or disturbances; those who disobey will be dealt with according to military law! Tomorrow, someone will show you new recruits the camp rules and training. Go now.
"Yes, thank you, Officer Han." Lin Feng clasped his hands in thanks and pushed open the door to enter the barracks.
The barracks were spacious, with two rows of large communal sleeping platforms on either side, each capable of accommodating more than ten people. At this moment, seven or eight men were already inside, all young men dressed in matching gray uniforms. Some were tidying their bunks, some were talking in hushed tones, and others were curiously watching the newly arrived Lin Feng. The air was thick with the stench of feet, sweat, and the characteristic heat of young men.
Lin Feng's arrival caused a small commotion. All eyes fell on him, filled with scrutiny, curiosity, and a hint of barely perceptible xenophobia.
Lin Feng's expression remained unchanged as his gaze quickly swept over everyone in the barracks, memorizing their appearances and expressions. Then, he found the bunk number seven (C) that Officer Han had mentioned—an upper bunk against the wall. He silently walked over, placed the simple bundle Zhou Wenyuan had given him (containing two sets of clothes and some loose copper coins) on the bunk, and began to unpack.
"Hey, newbie?" A burly man with a menacing face, lying on the lower bunk next to Lin Feng, glanced at him sideways, his tone laced with provocation. "What's your name? Where are you from?"
Lin Feng glanced at him and said calmly, "Lin Feng, you're from the north."
"The north? Border troops?" The man raised an eyebrow, sat up, his uniform open, revealing thick chest hair and several old scars, making him look somewhat fierce. "Judging by your appearance, you don't seem like a raw recruit. Have you ever killed anyone?"
The barracks fell silent immediately, everyone watching with interest. It was common for veterans to intimidate new recruits.
Lin Feng stopped what he was doing, turned around, and looked directly at the man, his gaze calm and unwavering: "Killed."
The two simple words startled the man slightly. He hadn't expected Lin Feng to answer so readily, nor had he anticipated the look in Lin Feng's eyes. There was none of the fear or feigned composure often seen in new recruits; instead, there was an unfathomable calmness, as if he were asking a mundane question like, "Have you eaten?" This calmness, however, made the man feel a strange pressure.
"Heh, quite the boast." The man grinned, trying to regain his composure. "How many have you killed? You mean just chickens and sheep?"
Lin Feng didn't answer, but simply looked at him quietly. That gaze made the man's smile gradually falter. He sensed that this newcomer was not someone to be trifled with.
"Alright, Wang Kui, that's enough." An older soldier on the opposite bunk, with a fair complexion and who looked like he had some schooling, spoke up to smooth things over. "We're all brothers here to join the army and get paid. We might even be fighting side by side in the future. Brother Lin, don't take offense, Wang Kui just has this bad temper. My name is Sun Ergou. I went to a private school for two years and know a few characters. If you don't understand anything in the future, you can ask me."
Lin Feng nodded to Sun Ergou: "Thank you, Brother Sun."
Wang Kui snorted and didn't say anything more. He lay back down, but his eyes still kept glancing at Lin Feng.
Lin Feng ignored them and continued tidying his bed. He made his bed, carefully hid the dagger under his pillow in the most convenient spot, then took off his shoes, got into bed, lay down fully clothed, closed his eyes, and began to regulate his breathing.
Seeing this, the others in the barracks gradually lost interest in talking and lay down. Soon, snoring, teeth grinding, and mumbling in their sleep began to rise.
Lin Feng did not fall asleep immediately. He listened to the sounds inside and outside the barracks, and quickly sorted through the information he had gathered that day.
Zhou Wenyuan has already submitted a memorial impeaching Prince Qi, and a turmoil is brewing in the court. Prince Qi is fighting like a cornered beast, launching a frantic counterattack. He has now infiltrated the elite troops of the state army, seemingly safe, but in reality, he is on the edge of another vortex. Zhao Tieying can be trusted, but there must be Prince Qi's spies in the camp. He needs to quickly familiarize himself with the environment, understand the interpersonal relationships, establish a foothold, and at the same time, pay attention to any clues that may be related to Prince Qi.
Furthermore, although A-Yue and the others are temporarily safe in the Zhou residence, the Zhou residence is not a monolithic entity. He must quickly gain a certain position in the army and possess his own power in order to better protect them in the upcoming storms and also to secure a future for himself.
And then there was… the plum blossom hairpin hidden in his bosom. Yingzi's clear eyes, filled with worry and shyness, would occasionally flash through his mind. This warmth from a chance encounter softened a corner of his hardened heart. He hoped she and Wang Zhen could weather this storm safely.
His thoughts were churning, but Lin Feng's heart was calmer and more resolute than ever before.
