Chapter 6 Ambush on the Grain Transport Route
On the third day after being promoted to deputy squad leader, a new task came.
This time it wasn't some petty trick by Liu Biao or Captain Wang, but genuine military business—and quite lucrative at that.
"Seventh squad, Zhang Kui and Lin Feng, listen to my command!" The messenger's attitude was much more respectful this time.
"The battalion commander has ordered your unit to depart at dawn tomorrow and ambush a Di-Rong grain transport convoy that may be passing through the 'Wild Wolf Valley' pass, fifty li to the north, in coordination with friendly forces! If successful, the captured grain and supplies will be divided according to custom! It is imperative to act discreetly!"
Intercept the grain convoy!
Inside the shack, the eyes of the nine men of the Seventh Company (temporary replacements) lit up. This was a lucrative post! Not only were there many opportunities for military merit, but more importantly, if successful, they could share in the spoils of war according to the rules! Grain, cloth, and possibly even some gold and silver!
Zhang Kui's spirits lifted, and he clasped his hands in acceptance of the order: "Seventh Squad obeys!"
After the messenger left, Zhang Kui immediately gathered everyone to discuss the matter.
"I know Wolf Valley," Zhang Kui said, spreading out a simple animal hide map with rough charcoal lines drawn on it. "The terrain is treacherous, with steep slopes on both sides and a narrow valley in the middle. It's indeed a good place for an ambush. However, the Di Rong grain transport team will definitely have guards, at least twenty or thirty, and possibly forty or fifty. We only have nine people..."
He looked at Lin Feng: "Deputy Squad Leader Lin, what are your thoughts?"
After the battle at Beacon Tower No. 3, Zhang Kui had subconsciously come to regard Lin Feng as an equal tactical strategist.
Lin Feng looked at the map and pointed to the location of "Wolf Valley." His rich experience in mountain warfare and ambush from his previous life was rapidly processing his thoughts.
"The valley is narrow, which is suitable for ambushes, but it also means that if we are trapped inside, we may become sitting ducks."
Lin Feng's voice was calm. "The key lies in two points: First, whether the intelligence is accurate, when the grain convoy passed by, its size, and its guard configuration; second, the choice of ambush point and the retreat route."
"The intelligence came from the Iron Wall Battalion. They sent scouts to keep an eye on the Di Rong's rear supply lines, so it should be reliable," Zhang Kui said. "As for the size... I estimate it's a small team, about twenty or thirty vehicles, with about fifty guards. We're cooperating with a team from the Iron Wall Battalion; they'll be the main force, and we'll provide support from the side."
"Fifty guards..." Lin Feng pondered. Even with the Iron Wall Battalion, they might not have an absolute advantage in a head-on confrontation, especially since their mission was "interception" rather than "annihilation," and their target was supplies.
"Squad leader, I suggest we set off a day early to scout the terrain, choose the most advantageous ambush position, and pre-plan multiple withdrawal points," Lin Feng said. "Our advantage lies in our bows and arrows, especially my Ironback Bow, which can create casualties and chaos from a distance. We don't need to aim for total annihilation; we should focus on burning and destroying the supply wagons to create panic, and then coordinate with friendly forces to disperse or rout the escorts."
Zhang Kui and the others nodded in agreement. Lin Feng's thinking was clear, his goals were well-defined, and he was not greedy for quick success or reckless, which was very much in line with the operational principles of their small unit.
"Alright! We'll do it your way!" Zhang Kui decided. "Everyone get a good rest tonight and check your equipment. Lin Feng, bring plenty of arrows, especially high-quality ones. We'll set off before dawn tomorrow!"
Everyone responded enthusiastically and went to prepare.
Lin Feng returned to his corner—he now had a little independent space because of his position as deputy squad leader, although it was just a small area separated by broken wooden boards.
He carefully wiped the iron-backed bow and inspected each finely crafted arrow. He then carefully hid his three thousand coins and most of what he had left, carrying only five hundred coins and some loose change with him for emergencies. Finally, he sharpened the broken knife again and again.
In the dead of night, he closed his eyes to rest, repeatedly rehearsing the possible terrain and ambush plans of Wolf Valley in his mind, and anticipating various unforeseen circumstances.
The next day, before dawn, the 79th men quietly left the beacon camp and disappeared into the deep darkness of the north.
Wolf Valley is fifty miles from Beacon Camp. They traveled at a fast pace and arrived at the outer edge of the valley entrance in the afternoon.
As planned, instead of directly entering the pre-designated ambush area to meet up with the Iron Wall Battalion, Lin Feng and Zhang Kui personally conducted a detailed reconnaissance of the valley.
The valley path was indeed treacherous, with steep, heavily weathered rock slopes on both sides, covered with sparse, hardy shrubs. The road at the bottom of the valley was only about two zhang wide, and was covered with gravel and ruts.
Lin Feng moved like a ghost along the hillsides, observing every possible hiding place for ambushes or traps, assessing firing angles and arcs. He even climbed to higher ground to survey the terrain at both ends of the valley, searching for the best retreat route.
"Here, and here," Lin Feng whispered to Zhang Kui, pointing to several points on the map. "The slope is gentler, and the bushes are dense, making it suitable for concealment. We can set up tripwires and traps here to delay the enemy cavalry's charge. My bow can cover an area of 120 to 150 paces ahead, focusing on the lead wagon, the tail wagon, and any suspected leaders."
"The Iron Wall Battalion should occupy that higher hill on the other side, responsible for suppression and the main assault," Zhang Kui nodded. "We'll cooperate with them and disrupt the enemy's formation."
The two finalized their plan, quietly returned to the team's hiding place, assigned tasks, and used ropes, sharpened wooden stakes, and other materials they had brought to set up simple obstacles and traps at some key locations.
Everything is ready; all that's left is for the prey to fall into the trap.
The next day, as dawn broke, the wind was biting cold.
The members of the Seventh Group, who were hiding behind the cold rocks and bushes, had their hands and feet numb with cold, but no one dared to move.
Lin Feng lay prone in his chosen sniping position, covered with withered grass and a gray cloth. His iron-backed bow was already nocked an arrow, his fingers gripping the string, and his eyes were fixed on the entrance to the valley through the gaps in the bushes.
Around 7:00 AM, the dull sounds of wheels rolling and horses' hooves could be heard in the distance, along with the rough shouts of the Di Rong people.
coming!
A long procession slowly came into view. About thirty simple carts, pulled by oxen or mules, were piled high with bulging sacks and leather bags (presumably for grain and fodder). Forty Di Rong cavalrymen, guarding the procession, were scattered at the front, rear, and flanks, vigilantly observing their surroundings. Leading them was a burly man wearing leather armor trimmed with iron plates and a felt hat; he appeared to be a leader.
The convoy slowly drove into the valley.
Lin Feng's heartbeat calmed down, and his breathing became long and deep. He was like a cold stone, blending into his surroundings.
The middle of the convoy entered optimal firing range.
He didn't aim for the leader—who was the most heavily guarded. Instead, he chose the grain cart in the middle of the convoy that was piled highest and looked the heaviest.
The bowstring was slowly drawn back, and the iron-backed bow emitted a faint, heart-pounding straining sound. One hundred and twenty paces, crosswind level two.
"Whoosh—!"
The finely crafted arrows whistled through the air, cutting through the cold air, and accurately embedded themselves in a sack on the side of the grain cart!
"Pfft!" The sack ripped, but that wasn't the point.
Seeing the depth and angle at which the arrow pierced the ground, Lin Feng felt certain.
Immediately afterwards, he drew a second arrow with lightning speed, and the bowstring twanged again!
The second arrow was shot at a sack in the third-to-last car at the back of the convoy!
"Enemy attack—!" Almost at the same time the second arrow hit, a roar of alarm and anger erupted from the Di Rong guards. They had discovered the direction from which the arrow came. Some of the cavalry immediately charged toward the hillside where Lin Feng and his men were hiding, while others nervously surrounded the grain carts.
But it was too late.
The arrows Lin Feng shot had their arrowheads wrapped in a small piece of grease-soaked rag before he set off. They were then lit before being shot, and after the arrows pierced the sack, they ignited the dry grains and hay inside!
The wind was quite strong in the valley.
"Fire! The grain cart is on fire!" terrified shouts rang out.
Thick smoke billowed from the middle and rear of the convoy almost simultaneously, followed by orange-red flames that quickly spread! Dry grain and fodder are the best fuel!
"Fire! Fire! Put out the fire!" the Di Rong leader cried out in a fit of rage.
The ranks were thrown into chaos. Some guards rushed to fight the fire, some tried to pull the burning vehicles away, and others searched for archers on the hillside. The entire valley was filled with thick smoke and confusion.
Just then, from the opposite hilltop, the deep sound of war drums and shouts of battle rang out! The Iron Wall Battalion's ambush troops had made their move!
Dozens of Yan soldiers rushed down from the high ground and headed straight for the chaotic Di Rong convoy!
"Release the arrows!" Zhang Kui roared as he saw the opportunity had come.
The remaining eight men of the Seventh Division, including Zhang Kui himself, emerged from their hiding places and fired arrows at the panicked Di Rong guards below. Although their accuracy was far inferior to Lin Feng's, the high vantage point and the enemy's disarray still caused considerable casualties and panic.
Lin Feng did not stop. He continued to calmly fire his bow, specifically targeting the minor Di Rong leaders and brave warriors who were trying to organize firefighting or resistance.
"Whoosh!" A burly man who was brandishing a scimitar and roaring fell to the ground after being shot in the throat.
"Whoosh!" A squad leader who was trying to lead several riders to charge up the hillside was shot off his horse.
"Whoosh!" Another Di Rong archer, who had lit a rocket and was trying to launch it towards the Iron Wall Camp, was pierced through the chest by an arrow.
His arrows were like the Grim Reaper's call; with each twang of the bowstring, someone would fall or be seriously wounded. The power and range of the finely crafted iron-spine bow, combined with his superhuman accuracy, created a death zone a hundred paces away.
The resistance of the Di Rong people quickly crumbled. Most of the grain carts caught fire, the guards suffered heavy casualties, and they were attacked from both sides, causing their morale to collapse.
"Retreat! Retreat quickly!" Seeing that the situation was hopeless, the leader didn't care about the grain carts anymore. He led the remaining dozen or so cavalrymen and fled in a sorry state toward the valley entrance.
The Iron Wall Battalion pursued them for a while, but mainly dispersed them and did not pursue them further. Their main objective was to sabotage the supply lines.
The battle ended quickly.
The valley was a scene of utter devastation. A dozen or so grain carts were ablaze, billowing thick smoke. The remaining vehicles were either abandoned or only slightly damaged. The bodies of the Di Rong lay scattered about, numbering around twenty. On the Yan army's side, the Iron Wall Battalion suffered several wounds, but the Seventh Platoon was unharmed.
The captain of the Iron Wall Battalion, surnamed Hu, was a dark-skinned man who came over to meet Zhang Kui and Lin Feng.
"Well done!" Captain Hu patted Zhang Kui's shoulder forcefully, but his gaze fell on Lin Feng, lingering for a moment on the iron-backed bow in his hand. "Excellent archery for setting fires, perfect timing! And that targeted shooting afterwards, impressive! Are you a new archer in the Beacon Fire Battalion, brother?"
"Your humble servant is Lin Feng, deputy squad leader of the 7th Squad of the Beacon Fire Battalion." Lin Feng clasped his hands in a fist salute.
"Deputy Squad Leader? Good! Young and promising!" Captain Hu laughed heartily. "This time the cooperation was excellent! As agreed, our Iron Wall Battalion will take most of the spoils, and the remaining grain carts, weapons, armor, and personal belongings of these barbarians will be divided among your Beacon Fire Battalion! As for the heads... report them from both sides together, and you'll definitely get your share of the credit!"
This was standard practice, and Zhang Kui naturally had no objection.
The members of the Seventh Division had already begun joyfully cleaning up the battlefield. Although most of the supplies had to be handed over, they could plunder the money, small weapons, and intact leather armor from Di Rong's corpse, and even get some grain from a few of the not-completely-burnt grain carts!
This is the real benefit!
Lin Feng didn't rush to loot. He walked to the grain cart he had initially shot; the fire had been mostly extinguished, but the sacks were badly burned. He pulled out the fine arrow—the shaft was charred, but the iron arrowhead remained intact. He carefully put it away. He then found a second arrow and retrieved it in the same way.
Refined arrows, which can be recycled as much as possible.
"Lin Feng, come quick!" Li Gou'er shouted excitedly beside the corpse of a Di Rong minor leader. "This guy had a jade pendant on him! And some loose gold!"
Lin Feng walked over and took a look. The jade pendant was of rough quality, and the gold was of poor quality, but in the eyes of the border soldiers, it was already a windfall.
"According to the rules, the spoils will be collected and then distributed back at the headquarters," Lin Feng said.
"Understood!" Li Gou'er happily put the items into a cloth bag.
Zhang Kui walked over, grinning from ear to ear: "We've struck gold! We'll get a lot of grain, money, and most importantly, military merit! Captain Hu just said we'll get at least ten heads as credit! Lin Feng, you'll get at least half!"
Half? That would be around level five.
Adding to the previous level five...
Lin Feng calculated in his mind. With this successful ambush, his accumulated military merits could very well approach or even reach the tenth level!
His gaze passed over the burning grain carts and the cheering comrades, and landed in the direction of the beacon fire camp.
In the prisoner-of-war camp, those female prisoners await their fate...
The goal of "home" has never been so clearly tangible as it is now.
The wind in Wolf Valley, carrying smoke and the smell of blood, ruffled the disheveled hair on his forehead.
He gripped the bow tightly in his hand.
almost.
It's really coming soon.
