Just past noon, the sun was blocked by thick clouds, only letting out a pale light.

The abandoned brick kiln at the west end is a landmark on the edge of the "muddy depression".

At this moment, twenty or thirty people had gathered on this wasteland.

Most of them were strong men, dressed in short-sleeved shirts, their chests either lean or muscular, covered with messy tattoos, their faces bearing expressions that ranged from fierce to indifferent. They huddled in groups of three or five, squatting or standing, talking in hushed tones, their eyes occasionally glancing toward the entrance of the cave dwelling.

At the entrance of the cave dwelling, a makeshift shed was erected from a few broken planks and tattered canvas. Underneath the shed sat a crooked table, behind which sat a gaunt, middle-aged man with a pointed face and small, yet shrewd and ruthless eyes. He wore a worn silk shirt, making him stand out among the group of rough men. One of his legs seemed to be somewhat unsteady, supported by a dark, worn-out cane. This was none other than Zhang Biao, the "Lame Wolf," the leader of the western end of "Muddy Hollow."

Behind Zhang Biao stood four burly men with their arms crossed, temples bulging, and fierce eyes; they were clearly his trusted henchmen. Liu Sandao also stood to the side, expressionless.

As Lin Feng walked to the edge of the wasteland, several malicious gazes immediately swept over him, filled with scrutiny and provocation.

He seemed oblivious, walked straight up to Liu Sandao, clasped his hands in greeting, and said, "Brother Liu."

Liu Sandao nodded and said to Zhang Biao, "Brother Biao, the men are here. They're the brothers I mentioned to you this morning, the ones who retired from the north. They're pretty tough."

Zhang Biao raised his eyelids, his triangular eyes scanning Lin Feng up and down, lingering for a moment on his faded, blood-stained old uniform. He spoke slowly, his voice hoarse, like sandpaper scraping: "Retired from the north? From the Beacon Fire Battalion?"

"It used to be." Lin Feng replied neither humbly nor arrogantly.

"What's your name?"

"Lin San," Lin Feng gave a pseudonym.

"Lin San..." Zhang Biao pondered the name, seemingly trying to glean something from it.

"Liu Sandao said you're good. However, I don't support idlers here, much less troublemakers. If you want to make a living here, you have to follow my rules, listen to me, and... have some real skills."

He paused, a glint of shrewdness flashing in his triangular eyes: "I'm short of someone here who can keep things under control and escort the goods. See that stone lock over there?" He pointed with his cane to a blue stone lock, half-buried in the soil at the edge of the wasteland, weighing no less than two hundred pounds. "Try swinging it a couple of times. If you can swing it and carry it for ten steps, then you've passed the first test."

Upon hearing this, the surrounding men immediately erupted in low chuckles and whispers.

That stone weight was clearly used in old brick kilns to weigh things down; it was thick and clumsy, with a slippery surface. Let alone carrying it for ten steps, most people would struggle to even move it. This was a show of force, a test.

Lin Feng remained expressionless, simply nodded, and turned to walk towards the stone lock.

The onlookers automatically made way for him, their eyes all focused on him; some were waiting to see him make a fool of himself, while others were simply curious.

When Lin Feng reached the stone lock, he stopped and did not immediately move it. Instead, he squatted down and patted the surface of the stone lock to feel its slipperiness and weight distribution.

Then, he untied the old cloth rope that served as his belt, wrapped it twice around his palm, and tied it tightly.

"Hey, you're starting to be particular now?" someone scoffed.

Lin Feng ignored him. He assumed a horse stance, lowered his back slightly, and spread his arms to firmly hold the stone lock on both sides. He didn't exert force immediately, but instead adjusted his breathing and felt the stone lock's center of gravity.

The next moment, he let out a low shout, his waist and abdomen suddenly exerted force, and the muscles in his arms bulged. His seemingly thin body instantly burst out with astonishing power! He actually lifted the heavy bluestone lock steadily off the ground!

The laughter and chatter around them stopped abruptly, and everyone stared wide-eyed.

Without pausing, Lin Feng used his waist strength to lift the stone lock upwards, and with a twist of his body, he hoisted the stone lock onto his right shoulder! The movement was clean and efficient, demonstrating excellent control over his strength.

He carried the stone weight, taking one step, two steps, three steps... his steps were steady, his breathing even, as if the weight on his shoulders was not a boulder weighing hundreds of pounds, but a bag of ordinary grain.

After taking ten steps, he was neither red-faced nor out of breath. He gently put down the stone lock with a muffled "thump," which seemed to shake the ground.

The wasteland was completely silent.

Everyone was stunned, including the thugs behind Zhang Biao; their expressions changed.

Liu Sandao's lips twitched slightly, seemingly unsurprised.

Zhang Biao's triangular eyes gleamed even brighter. Leaning on his cane, he slowly stood up, walked to Lin Feng, and carefully looked him up and down again. He nodded: "Good strength! No wonder you're a tough guy from the border army!"

He then changed the subject: "However, strength alone isn't enough. The 'goods' I'm escorting here aren't always safe. We might run into some tough guys, or even... officials. You have to be able to fight, dare to fight, and know the rules, when to fight to the death and when to back down."

He clapped his hands. From among the four thugs behind him stepped forward a burly man, the tallest, with a face full of scars and a ferocious wolf's head tattooed on his chest.

This man was a head taller than Lin Feng, and his arms were as thick as an average person's thigh. When he stood there, he looked like a wall.

"Big Bear, test this Brother Lin's skills, but stop short of a fight," Zhang Biao said calmly, then looked at Lin Feng, "Lin San, beat him, or make him submit, and you'll follow me and live a life of luxury. If you lose, or don't know the rules..." He didn't finish his sentence, but the coldness in his eyes said it all.

The burly man named "Big Bear" grinned maliciously, cracking his thick neck as he strode heavily toward Lin Feng, his fists, as big as casserole dishes, already clenched.

The men watching the spectacle immediately became excited, swarming closer together, whistling and shouting filling the air. This kind of brutal, hand-to-hand combat was a rare source of amusement in their monotonous lives.

Lin Feng watched the approaching "Big Bear" with a blank expression, only slightly shifting his body to assume a fighting stance. He didn't choose to confront it head-on; given the opponent's size and strength advantage, a direct confrontation would be unwise.

"Big Bear" roared and charged forward like a bull, throwing a punch straight at Lin Feng's face. The punch was powerful and heavy, making a whooshing sound. If this punch landed, an ordinary person would surely suffer broken bones and tendons.

Instead of retreating, Lin Feng advanced. Just as the fist was about to strike, his body moved to the side like a fish, dodging the punch. At the same time, his left hand shot out like lightning, not to block, but to grab "Big Bear's" wrist and pulse point with lightning speed, his five fingers tightening like iron clamps! At the same time, his right leg silently lifted up and kicked "Big Bear" hard in the back of his supporting leg's knee!

"Big Bear" felt a sharp pain and numbness in his wrist, and half of his body was unable to exert any strength. Then, he was hit hard in the back of his knee, his lower body went limp, and his huge body staggered forward involuntarily, leaving him wide open!

Seizing this fleeting opportunity, Lin Feng grabbed the opponent's wrist with his left hand and pulled it downwards, twisting his body and bending his elbow, delivering a swift and ruthless elbow strike that landed squarely on "Big Bear's" soft ribs!

"Ugh—!"

"Big Bear" let out a muffled, painful howl. Its face instantly turned red and purple. Clutching its ribs, its massive body crashed to its knees, curling up into a ball, only able to gasp for breath. It had no strength left to fight.

The whole process was as fast as lightning, taking only two or three breaths.

The excited commotion around them abruptly stopped, like a duck being choked.

Everyone stared in disbelief at the center of the arena—Lin Feng calmly stood still, while the once-aggressive "Big Bear" was now lying on the ground, convulsing in pain, like a boiled shrimp.

Clean, efficient, and ruthless! Without the slightest hesitation, it's the most practical killing technique in the military! This isn't a brawl among thugs; this is a skill honed through real life-or-death battles!

Zhang Biao's triangular eyes narrowed sharply, a flash of shock and elation crossing his face! He'd struck gold!

This Lin San is definitely a tough nut to crack; he's a ruthless character who's seen blood and killed people! He's exactly the kind of expert who can keep things under control!

Liu Sandao was also slightly moved. He had guessed that Lin Feng was skilled, but he did not expect him to be so capable, defeating "Big Bear," who was known for his strength, in one move.

"Good! Good! Good!" Zhang Biao, leaning on his cane, said "good" three times in a row, a smile spreading across his face, though the smile looked somewhat sinister on his weasel-faced features. "Brother Lin, you're quite skilled! No wonder you're a hero from the Beacon Fire Camp! From now on, you'll work for me! I, Zhang Biao, will never mistreat a capable brother!"

He waved his hand dismissively: "Tonight, at 'Drunken Immortal's Abode' at the dock, we'll have a welcome dinner for Brother Lin! Everyone better watch your step. From now on, Brother Lin is my brother, Zhang Biao's brother. Anyone who disagrees, they'll have to face Brother Lin's fists first!"

The way the men around Lin Feng looked at him changed instantly. Their previous disdain and amusement turned into awe, envy, and even a hint of fawning.

In this "muddy land," might makes right.

Lin Feng earned initial respect and status through his abilities.

Lin Feng felt little emotion. This was just the beginning, the beginning of infiltrating this gray area and gaining a foothold.

He clasped his hands in a fist and bowed slightly to Zhang Biao: "Thank you for your appreciation, Master Biao."

Zhang Biao laughed heartily, stepped forward, and patted Lin Feng's shoulder affectionately (even though he only reached Lin Feng's shoulder): "From now on, we're brothers! Come on, let's go back to the gang first. There are some rules I need to explain to you."

Lin Feng nodded and followed behind Zhang Biao, who was leaning on his crutch and full of vigor. Amid the awe-inspiring or curious gazes of the group of men, they walked into the depths of the "muddy ditch," the chaotic yet opportunity-filled kingdom belonging to the "Lame Wolf."

Take the first step steadily.

The chessboard may be crude, and the pieces may be rough, but the hand holding the pieces has already made its move.

Lin Feng's forces quietly planted their first seed in this most filthy muddy place.

And the deep waters of the state government will begin to ripple with unpredictable waves because of the sprouting of this seed.
