Xiao Xu whispered something in the boss's ear, causing everyone present to feel uneasy.

But Yu Lian didn't say anything after that. She squatted down at the warehouse door to check the lock. The keyhole had been pried open, but the technique was skillful, leaving no obvious scratches.

She asked Xiao Xu to dismiss the irrelevant people, and then she went for a walk around the area.

Beside the makeshift wooden fence, there were several deep ruts. It looked like a handcart. Outside the fence was wasteland with some sparse grass.

As Yu Lian crawled out through the narrow hole, she could see more clearly the traces left behind.

"Didn't you guys notice before?" Yu Lian asked Xiao Xu behind her.

"Boss, I found it. But the tire tracks just end on the other side of the stream. There's a small mountain road there, but it disappears after it rains."

Yu Lian walked quickly forward and arrived at the dirt road that Xiao Xu had mentioned. Then she looked in two directions and said, "They should have been taken to a small town in the suburbs to sell."

Xiao Xu added, "We've asked around at all sorts of recycling stations and even investigated secretly, but we haven't found any clues."

"You'd be lucky to find it at the recycling center. Don't the people there have any brains? The company only buys the newest and best materials. The recycling center is practically a government agency; who would dare accept their products?"

"Oh dear! How could I not have thought of that!"

"Xiao Xu, if you're tired, just ask me for leave. Don't push yourself."

"Sister Nian, I am indeed tired. But I will apply for a break after the truth of this matter is revealed."

"Okay, you go drive, we'll go ask around in that town down there."

"Okay, coming right away!"

A dozen minutes later, when they were almost at their destination, Yu Lian asked Xiao Xu to park the car outside the town.

"Oh, right, change your clothes. There are work uniforms in the trunk."

Although he didn't understand his boss's idea, Xiao Xu still did as he was told.

She went to the street and bought a handkerchief to cover her head, leaving only her eyes exposed.

"Just wander around, do nothing, and buy whatever catches your eye."

Xiao Xu nodded blankly.

Then I saw my boss walk from one end of the street to the other, carrying a bag of seasonal fruit and a newly bought coat in his arms.

Xiao Xu followed suit and bought a brown sugar cake to eat as he walked.

Even though my legs were trembling from walking around, the shop owner showed no sign of stopping.

"Sister Nian, let's find a place to sit down."

"Yes, thank you for your hard work. It's lunchtime now."

The two randomly chose a small roadside restaurant and sat down.

At first, Xiao Xu couldn't understand why the boss didn't go to another clean restaurant with fewer people.

When I got here, I realized that the owner valued the clientele of this place – many of them came from construction sites.

"I just got paid today," Xiao Xu whispered a reminder.

Then one of the people sitting at a corner table said, "We finally managed to get together for a meal today, so don't say anything unnecessary."

"What's wrong with me saying something? They were abusing their power for personal gain, and I can't even speak up?"

"If you can't even complain, what are you doing gossiping behind people's backs? Enough already!"

One of them, who was probably the older brother, yelled at the two of them, and then never said anything like that again.

This made Yu Lian even more certain that the theft was a coordinated effort from both inside and outside.

After hurriedly eating a few bites and throwing down the money, the two left the town.

On the way back, Yu Lian said, "I will personally keep watch tonight, but you can't tell anyone."

"Okay, I'll go with you to talk about Sister Nian."

"No need. Just drop me off at the construction site in a bit, then you can go back and get some rest for the night. I'll call someone over in a bit."

"Yes, thank you for your hard work, Sister Nian."

Yu Lian shook her head and didn't say anything more, turning her attention back to her work. A large pile of unprocessed documents requiring her decision lay on her lap.

That afternoon.

Before leaving, Yu Lian made sure to close the door tightly and loudly reminded everyone in every occupied office: "Lock the doors and windows when you leave."

The sound of her leaving get off work left an impression on many people at the construction site.

Yu Lian did indeed leave, to put the "thief's" mind at ease.

She went home and slept for a few hours, then sneaked back late at night.

But Jasmine was with her.

I was alone when I left home, but there were two of us halfway there, and I almost had a cardiac arrest.

"Shut up, or you'll be in big trouble!"

"Okay, I'm still reliable in situations like this, okay?"

"But what are you doing in Yuncheng? Aren't you waiting for Xue Ci?"

"There are still a few days left, what's the rush? Let's finish my important task first."

Yu Lian was confused by Jasmine's attitude, and now she felt that Jasmine was teasing Xue Ci and her parents.

"Don't say it, there's someone there."

The beam of the flashlight shone over, accompanied by the sound of two people talking, and then slowly faded away after a while.

"Why are you acting like a thief when you go back to your own place?"

"You have to be a thief to find out what secrets these people are hiding."

Jasmine squatted on the ground, looking dejected. "There definitely won't be anything tonight. You just arrived, the bosses are all here, who would dare steal anything?"

"What you said makes sense. But I'm not worried about others stealing; I suspect the three people on patrol."

The two found a place with an excellent view and easy concealment.

Jasmine sat down wearily on the grass, while Yu Lian climbed up a tree trunk, squatted down, and wore binoculars around her neck.

"Nothing unusual has been found yet. But if I remember correctly, they patrol in pairs, and the one who's alone is very suspicious."

"What is the basis for this?"

"If he's going to operate in the middle of the night, he'll have to avoid his comrades. I checked the duty roster, and it just so happens that things started going missing a few days after that person took leave."

"But wouldn't the person who asked for leave be more suspicious?"

"I sent someone to his house to 'visit' him. He was very ill, and said that he suddenly fell ill one day. But the food he ate was normal, so I suspect that someone poisoned him."

"In short, all three of these people still patrolling here are highly suspicious."

Jasmine nodded approvingly: "That's why I said you could be a boss, but I couldn't. You're really quick-witted. But you and I..."

"Shh-"

Yu Lian gestured for Jasmine to shut up—the two patrolmen had arrived.

Because of the close proximity, Yu Lian was able to hear their conversation clearly.

"Do you think it might have been Old Zhao who did it?"

"Don't talk nonsense. He's so old, he can barely lift two steel bars, how could he steal so much stuff in one night?"

"What I mean is, Old Zhao was keeping watch, and his son and nephew came to pull them away."

The other person was silent for a moment before asking, "Do you know something?"

"I don't really know anything, but I heard from the villagers that Old Zhao's son recently sent some money home, quite a lot. But one night when I was outside urinating, I saw Zhao Er again. Logically speaking, he hasn't been back from the city for a long time, and it's not like it's a holiday, so he shouldn't be back."

"You must be mistaken, it's so late at night. I saw him at the auto repair shop in the city just a couple of days ago."

"I must be overthinking it."

Yu Lian was receiving crucial information when Jasmine suddenly said something that almost made her fall off the tree.
