Chapter 401 "Arguing"
"I swear, I'll change right now. I'll kneel down and apologize when no one's around, okay?"
Yu Lian shrank back. She admitted that she was dominant in the marriage, but she never engaged in gender inequality, and making He Lin kneel down to apologize was unheard of.
"Don't pretend in front of Mom and Dad. He Lin, are you genuinely apologizing, or are you just trying to trip me up?"
He Lin felt very wronged. He spoke very softly, so his parents-in-law, who were standing under the eaves of the main house, could not possibly hear him.
"Of course, I sincerely apologize. I promise I won't interrupt again; I'll wait until you've finished speaking before giving my opinion."
Yu Lian mentally reviewed the lesson, feeling it wasn't thorough enough. She lowered her voice, making sure only the two of them could hear: "Tired? Or fed up? You stopped treasuring me after you got me? I've noticed you're getting more and more like a regressor. This is a classic case of not caring about me. Think about where you went wrong, and come find me when I have time to hear your explanation. If you don't want to explain, that's fine too."
After saying that, she pushed the door shut and locked it tightly, then leisurely began reading a novel.
The noise outside suddenly became chaotic. There were voices from her parents, He Lin, Yu Xin, and Xiao Youyou. But Yu Lian ignored them all.
The children in the room stared at her for a long time.
"Go play with your toys if you want to play, go read your books if you want to read, just don't bother me."
After saying that, Yu Lian turned around and lay down halfway.
The only one who was anxious was He Lin. He gradually realized why Yu Lian had been so angry earlier. Through the door, he said one last thing: "I won't joke around inappropriately anymore. I mean what I say. You rest first. I'll be right at the door. Just tell me if you need anything."
He Ningze took small steps to his mother's side and asked in a sweet voice, "Mom, are you really not going to let Dad in? But you weren't angry. I thought you were just putting on an act and then let him in."
The only son among the four children who showed any concern for his father spoke up, and Yu Lian suddenly felt that He Lin was actually quite pitiful. Her heart softened, and she relented, saying, "Then go tell him to write a thousand-word self-criticism. Show it to me when it's done, and if I'm satisfied, I'll forgive him; if not, he can keep writing."
"Okay, Mom, I'm going right now!"
Seeing his brother running around so eagerly, He Ningchuan snorted in dissatisfaction and turned to his sister for approval: "Do you think your brother is doing this to buy a game console?"
"Definitely!"
Hearing the two children talking about their older brother behind her back, Yu Lian coughed twice to remind them.
He Ningze returned shortly after: "Mom, Dad said he can finish writing it in thirty minutes, so you can rest first. He also said he made a mistake and will give you a present tomorrow."
In just two minutes, the novel reached its most crucial point. Yu Lian didn't pay attention to the second half of the sentence, continuing to read the novel while waiting for He Lin's self-criticism.
He Lin was much faster than expected. Yu Lian suspected he had just scribbled something down, but when she received it, the handwriting was neat and each word was written with care; the entire thousand-word text expressed the attitude she wanted from him.
While she was looking at it, He Lin waited anxiously for the result.
Setting down the paper, Yu Lian said softly, "Forget it, this is the first and last time. If there's a next time, it won't be so simple."
He Lin quickly sat on the armrest of the sofa and massaged her shoulders, vowing, "I promise I won't do it again."
Yu Lian casually placed the apology letter on the table and waved her hand, "I was just trying to scare you and teach you a lesson. Now I want to have a serious talk with you about what we didn't finish earlier. Come out."
She led He Lin to a corner of the courtyard wall and whispered, "You don't really plan to live like this forever, do you?"
Which matter are you referring to?
"That thing I told you before. Don't you think your relationship with the children, especially An'an, is too cold?"
"Isn't this normal? Not all parents and children have to have a good relationship. A certain distance is fine. If the relationship is too good, the parents will lose authority when disciplining their children."
Yu Lian's expression instantly changed: "He Lin, are you even taking this seriously? One second you promised to solve the problem properly, and the next you're acting like a liar? You can live alone then!"
She turned and left, slamming the door even louder than last time.
Back inside, she composed herself and said, pretending to be calm, "Don't make a sound, and don't tell your dad. Let him be outside by himself."
To avoid disturbing the children, Yu Lian pretended to still be acting, letting them go about their own business. After tidying up briefly, she lay down on a recliner to sleep. Before going to sleep, she specifically told the children not to let He Lin in.
When you need kids, you're never short of options; these four little soldiers I raised have truly come in handy. After she fell asleep, the children thoughtfully reminded each other not to make a sound, and even assigned one to guard the door, keeping a close eye on their father if he tried to get close. If he did, they would immediately hold him back.
He Lin was both amused and exasperated. His parents-in-law doted on their grandchildren, and the kids were no match for him. But if they made even the slightest whimper, the two elders would appear. As an adult, he couldn't argue with the children in front of his elders, so he finally conceded defeat and slept on the sofa in the main room that night.
The main room was spacious, but filled with furniture and decorations. There were enough sofas for the family, placed on either side of the coffee table. It was uncomfortable for someone as tall as He Lin to sleep on them; he couldn't stretch his legs, and turning over would cause him to bump into the armrests. He tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep. He spent less than three hours truly asleep, the rest of the time reflecting on what he had done wrong. He thought about many things, from when they first met, to their marriage, to their arguments, to their reconciliations—along the way, he realized he had indeed fallen short in many ways. It wasn't that he didn't love her; it was that he didn't know how to express it. Yu Lian didn't want him to be rich or capable; she wanted him to listen attentively when she spoke.
As dawn approached, he realized his mistake. It wasn't that Yu Lian was being too serious; it was that he was being too casual. He shouldn't have interrupted when she was speaking earnestly. If he didn't correct this habit, they would argue again in the future.
Yu Lian was not only successful in educating her child, but also remarkably adept at educating her husband. He Lin didn't even consider that it was his wife's fault; he spent the entire night searching for the reasons within himself. In the end, he actually came to a conclusion—although it was somewhat related to Yu Lian's passive personality, he still tried his best to correct his own habits.
I never expected that my wife would leave with someone else before she had even forgiven me. We were originally scheduled to leave in two or three days, but Jasmine and Xue Ci had a big fight, and that morning she urged Yu Lian to leave immediately, saying that she couldn't stay any longer.
Yu Lian was worried about the company's affairs, but even more worried about Jasmine, a pregnant woman, going alone first. She thought about it, and realized that if anything happened to Jasmine on the way, she would never forgive herself. Company matters could be postponed, but she couldn't ignore her friend's situation. In the end, she took the initiative to end her cold war with He Lin.
"How did you get rid of Rick?" This was a question that had always been on her mind.
