"Hey! No, we can't go together and alert them. You three, hide here. I'll go alone and say I have something to tell them."
Yu Xin brushed the dust off her clothes and quietly walked to the front of the wooden house: "Grandma, are you still home?"
The door panel was very thin and offered no sound insulation whatsoever. During those few seconds of waiting, Yu Xin drifted off into thought—what would they do in winter? Would they freeze?
Who are you looking for?
Lost in thought, Yu Xin was startled when someone appeared behind her. Just then, Wang Qin came out: "It's you! Did you leave something behind?"
"It wasn't Grandma... It's alright, I was just passing by!"
Yu Xin's desertion left the three people hiding in the distance looking at each other in bewilderment.
"What's wrong with her?"
"I don't know, let's go outside and talk about it first."
After struggling to climb over the wall twice, the three of them, panting heavily, finally found Yu Xin hiding behind a tree.
"What are you doing? You're letting me down at this crucial moment. That's not like you at all."
"No... I remember that classmate was quite smart. We were just clever in a small way, afraid of being seen through and giving ourselves away, so we didn't dare to continue. But it doesn't matter anymore, it just means that the two of them were already connected."
In her panic, Yu Xin changed the subject without letting her friend notice anything amiss. Unconsciously, she seemed to have discovered a shocking secret. Suppressing her fear, Yu Xin decided to verify it first and then tell her friend once it was confirmed.
As the school's most absent student, Yu Xin wasn't familiar with most of her classmates, let alone someone she didn't know from the same school. She only recognized the person from a distance during the opening ceremony when the other student gave a speech as a student representative. But the moment she saw the person's face, she concluded—this person and Director Wang must be connected; their eyes were so alike. In an instant, she was certain that there was a connection between them.
After returning home, Yu Xin stayed indoors, tinkering in her room for a long time, filling a basket with waste paper. Finally, relying on her "superior" skills, she wrote a letter. She couldn't wait to take her experiment and randomly picked a child on the street, bribing him with a piece of candy.
"Is Director Wang here?"
A timid little boy stood at the entrance of the logistics department's office area, clutching a piece of paper and looking around.
"Little friend, Director Wang is in a meeting, he'll be there soon..."
"Who's looking for me?"
The little boy looked up and asked, as if confirming, "Are you Director Wang?"
"What are you doing here, kid? Where are your parents?"
The little boy handed over what he was holding: "An older brother asked me to give this to you. Goodbye."
After handing the letter to the recipient, the child ran off in a flash. Director Wang hadn't even reacted yet, taking two steps after him but seeing no one. She unfolded the folded letter, her face changing drastically. Noticing someone approaching behind her, she hastily stuffed the letter into her pocket.
"Director Wang, are you alright?"
"Um...it's nothing, I'm just going out for a bit."
She then chased after the child in the direction he had left. Every move she made after leaving the house was observed by Yu Xin. Seeing Director Wang's panicked state and profuse sweating, Yu Xin was now certain—the two people living in the wooden shack in the factory were her elderly mother and her own son. To discard her own son like trash while treating her sister's son as her own—clearly, some story was being omitted.
"Damn it, how dare they harass me!"
Director Wang was furiously hiding nearby, and Yu Xin, hiding in a big tree, could hear everything clearly. However, since Director Wang wouldn't leave, she could only carefully hide.
As she held her breath, Yu Xin noticed Director Wang's attire—none of her clothes were cheap. Putting everything else aside, just comparing the two families' circumstances, even a tiny bit of money she managed to squeeze out would be enough for this grandmother and grandson to live on for months. She was about the same age as Yu Xin, and also a well-known high-achieving student from a poor family. Thinking of this, Yu Xin felt an urge to crush this troublesome old woman to death.
"Director Wang, are you about to leave work?"
"Oh, you're joking. I'm just waiting for some materials at the door."
Then the other person suddenly changed the subject: "By the way, how's Si Qin? I heard he was discharged from the army and can't serve anymore, right?"
Having his attention diverted, Director Wang was visibly more relaxed, leaning against a large tree with his arms crossed: "Oh dear, I'll be going back in a couple of days. I have to give those onlookers an explanation. Think about it, of the four Si brothers, only one is left now, Si Qin... and my sister is dead too. The higher-ups are just putting on a show."
Seeing her confidence, the other person wisely ended the conversation, exchanged a few casual pleasantries, and left. Yu Xin, hiding in the tree, was now fuming. She hadn't expected Director Wang to be so shameless; she hadn't realized he was even more arrogant in private. She hadn't found him, and after fuming for a while, Director Wang left. Yu Xin angrily jumped down and made several gestures towards the spot where Director Wang had disappeared.
"Hey, you skipped class again?"
Turning around, Yu Xin almost jumped up: "Brother Yue! Why are you back?!"
"Just passing through, but the boss has granted me two days' leave."
"Ah... just two days? Come on, come on, no one's home right now, and you don't have a key, let's go to my place."
Unable to refuse Yu Xin's enthusiasm, Yang Yue walked back together. On the way, Yang Yue casually asked a question, which unexpectedly brought up something that made him unable to control his anger.
"He really did that?!"
The compound was large, and not all children of the same age could get along; everyone had their own small circles. As for Si Qin, he was merely the child of his parents' colleague, a nodding acquaintance. Because he had disliked the other person since childhood, there was a time when he tried to force his way in, but Yang Yue wouldn't allow it, so Si Qin gave up. But from then on, he held a grudge and never gave him a kind look. This was even though he was several years older than the other person; he dared not imagine how the other person would retaliate if the ages were reversed.
"Brother Yue, don't worry about it, this matter has been resolved."
"Resolved? How was it resolved?"
"My sister sacrificed her status as an unmarried woman to marry my brother-in-law."
Yang Yue truly regretted his firm refusal when his superior asked if he wanted to go home last time. He couldn't believe so much had happened during his absence.
"Your sister got married!"
"Oh, that's a long story. Come on, let's talk about it over tea at home, my mouth is so dry in this heat."
Half an hour later.
"So your sister is really married now?"
Yu Xin's lips curled into a smile: "Brother Yue, you're not regretting it now, are you?"
Yang Yue glared at Yu Xin beside him: "You brat, what nonsense are you spouting? What kind of person is your brother-in-law who came along halfway through your life?"
"Oh dear, if someone has bad character, how could they save my sister?"
Yang Yue said anxiously, "What if? What if he's a bad person who's all talk and no action..."
"Brother! Stop talking."
Yu Xin suddenly stood up: "Brother-in-law, you're back!"
Compared to Yang Yue's composure, Yu Xin seemed like a greenhorn. He Lin nodded indifferently, walked past the two of them, took a yellow file folder from upstairs, and left the Yu family home.
"Who does he/she think he/she is? He/she has no manners at all."
"My brother-in-law is just a man of few words. Yue, stop talking and let's go."
Yang Yue looked at Yu Xin, who had just been so kind as to invite him into her home to rest, in disbelief: "Your favoritism is so obvious. Besides, I didn't name names, how did he know I was talking about him?"
Yu Xin didn't know either, but she just sided with her brother-in-law.
"Brother Yue, you should go now. I'll tell my sister you're back! Come back if your parents aren't home tonight!"
