"He Lin! I'm here!"
Those people had said before they left that He Lin would come out soon. Yu Lian recognized a man on a bicycle from afar. She waved, and He Lin, abandoning his bicycle, ran over, frantically checking him over.
"I'm fine, don't worry."
After confirming that Yu Lian was really alright, He Lin finally felt relieved.
"It's getting late, let's talk as we walk," Yu Lian immediately decided. He Lin picked up the bicycle in the distance—he probably wouldn't be able to easily return it to the young man from earlier tomorrow; he was in such a hurry that he had damaged the bicycle in some places.
"Hold on tight, I'm going to ride faster."
"Okay, hold on tight."
They rode their bicycles for a while, but neither of them spoke. It wasn't until they reached the main road that Yu Lian tentatively spoke, "You just now…"
Before she could finish speaking, He Lin interrupted her: "Were you looking at me from up there the whole time?"
Yu Lian was surprised and didn't know why He Lin knew.
"Yes. But I can't hear you. I can only tell what happened from your expression. Someone next to me will say a few words." Yu Lian didn't want to hide it at all, but the thought of that person sent chills down her spine—they had no emotions at all, unlike a human. Now, only the word "ghost" could explain the other person's existence.
"It's all over. Whether their goal was money or people, it was all to lull me into a false sense of security. Don't worry, this will never happen again, I promise you." He Lin paused suddenly, clearly upset. After what had just happened, no one could be in a good mood.
"He Lin, don't overthink it or blame yourself. But it seems a bit late for us to go back now, and Mom and Dad will worry."
He Lin told her about the message he had asked someone to pass on on his way here.
"Oh, I see... We can't go back to either place now, and we can't go to the guesthouse either, let's go to my workplace instead."
An hour later, He Lin brought Yu Lian to the single dormitory assigned by his work unit. It was clear that He Lin usually stayed here when he wasn't home; the room was full of life. Every item was in its proper place, neatly arranged, and pleasing to the eye.
"Okay...please change out of your dirty clothes first. All the clothes on the rack are clean. I'll get some hot water and bring it to you right away."
That's all they can do for now; both of them are in a sorry state. Going back now would expose them immediately. While Yu Lian was washing herself, He Lin stood guard outside the door. Listening to the sound of dripping water, He Lin couldn't calm down for a long time. Since his youth, he had always prided himself on having no rivals; only when he pretended to be foolish and hid his ignorance had he ever been left bewildered and disoriented. He desperately wanted to see her, but she seemed to be avoiding him. Perhaps that time on the bicycle was their last meeting; He Lin could sense it.
"He Lin, I'm done washing up, come in."
Yu Lian was wearing ill-fitting clothes, which looked strangely comical. He Lin didn't have a mirror either, so she couldn't see her reflection.
"I'll do it..." He Lin snatched the towel from her hand, not letting her do any work. "You rest, I'll do this. By the way, the towel is on the rack, dry your hair before you go to sleep."
He Lin hadn't returned for a long time. Yu Lian waited for ages, her hair almost dry, but still no one came. So she quietly walked to the edge of the corridor and looked down—He Lin was sitting alone in the empty square, lost in thought. Yu Lian couldn't guess what he was thinking, but he must be feeling terrible.
"He Lin, come back and rest."
Having located the source of the sound, He Lin looked up and saw Yu Lian leaning against the railing, waving at him.
"Okay, coming right away."
Ten minutes later, the two were lying on the same bed. This was the result of Yu Lian's long and arduous struggle—He Lin had just been spouting nonsense about only wanting to sleep on a hard bench.
"Don't feel embarrassed. Besides, didn't you say you like me? Shouldn't you be happy to share a bed with someone you like?" Her sudden words made He Lin blush for no reason.
"What, you're afraid to admit it?"
He Lin propped himself up and leaned against the headboard: "Didn't you say you couldn't hear?"
"Yes. But as I said, people around me would occasionally relay what you were saying to me. So you're lying?" Yu Lian tilted her head, her lips pressed tightly together as she looked at him expectantly.
"To tell you the truth." He Lin coughed lightly.
Upon receiving the answer, Yu Lian couldn't help but smile slightly: "Oh, that's good."
Yu Lian couldn't find the other word—this scene and situation were unfamiliar to her; she wasn't much better off than He Lin. But the feeling in her heart was hard to ignore. Even though it was a thrilling night, perhaps with excitement and fear dominating, something different was deep inside her. This inexplicable emotion was supporting her desire to say more.
"When?" Seeing He Lin staring blankly outwards, her face flushed crimson, she suddenly became bolder and spoke again, "I'm asking you a question, when did you start liking her?"
He Lin wanted to say "I liked her naturally," but his mind was filled with the correct answer—every detail, every memory told him that he was born to like her. So the answer was, of course, "the first time I saw you."
The He family's situation was naturally not as good as before, but even a fallen camel is bigger than a horse. The He family had good relationships, and even though the family was down on its luck, their former employees in the city still rushed to help them, so they could make ends meet; at most, there were some gossips. Even though the family was poor, He Lin's personality wouldn't lead him to pretend to be Yu Lian's boyfriend to make money. Looking back at his past self now, he probably just inexplicably wanted to get closer to her.
Yu Lian was surprised to hear this answer—at their first meeting, she couldn't sense any affection from He Lin.
"real?"
"Yeah. I just grew to like him more and more over time. But you said you didn't like someone like me, so I never dared to say anything."
Yu Lian thought carefully and asked in return, "Did I say that?"
"Yes, I remember it very clearly. I overheard what you said to other people, and I've kept it in mind ever since."
Yu Lian couldn't remember at all; it was probably something she said when dealing with someone. But that wasn't her intention—who doesn't like handsome people? Besides, He Lin was exceptionally good-looking, which was a huge plus. But compared to his personal charm, it was a piece of cake. The more you got to know him, the more you could feel his inner charm, something that ordinary people couldn't compare to. But it was made very clear back then that their relationship was a partnership. Yu Lian admired He Lin and also had a sense of contractual obligation. She wasn't a greedy person; although sometimes she thought life would be fine as it was, she would quickly dismiss such thoughts—the marriage she wanted was based on mutual consent. She just hadn't expected He Lin to like her. But Yu Lian quickly realized it was normal and said it openly: "It's normal. Lots of people have liked me since I was little. If you include everyone, you wouldn't even be in the top ten. Don't doubt yourself."
Seeing that the topic had gone astray, He Lin tried to steer it back: "So, Comrade Yu Lian, can we give it a try?"
