They were just watching the show from the sidelines, and the next second they were dragged into it; now neither of them can laugh at the other. Looking at Yu Xin, the instigator, neither of them was in the mood for anything else.
"Sis, brother-in-law, eat your food. Why don't you two have any appetite?" Half an hour later, at the dinner table, Yu Xin had been observing the two people opposite her for a long time.
"Eat your food and mind your own business."
Yu Xin felt targeted and looked at her father: "Dad, look at this~ My sister's attitude is too rude. I was just asking."
Yu Jinbu put down her chopsticks: "Alright, you eat yours, and then go do your homework." Turning to He Lin, she said, "He Lin, I heard from my colleagues that you're now the chief engineer. Congratulations!"
"Thank you, Dad. It's all thanks to the organization for not giving up on me, and to the director for standing up against all opposition, that I had this opportunity."
"That's right. Your director is a good leader who values talent. When we met last time, I had a brief chat with him and he said you were outstanding in your unit. While other people's reasons are important, ultimately it comes down to your own abilities."
"It's what I should do."
"Alright, let's not talk about these things while we're eating," Wang Meixia interrupted her husband's attempt to continue. Although Yu Jinbu had considered it, he figured there would be plenty of time to discuss it later, so he listened to his wife and focused on eating.
After the family finished eating, they went out for a rare walk to digest. On the way, Yu Xin kept asking her sister when she was going to have a baby, and Yu Lian's evasive answers were no use.
"Okay, okay, I promise I'll give you one this year, alright? You'll have to do all the childcare yourself then, I don't care anymore."
"Okay! Hehe, brother-in-law, you can do it too. I, Yu Xin, swear here and now that if my sister has a baby, whether it's a boy or a girl, twins, triplets, quadruplets, or even four..."
Yu Lian quickly interrupted, "Shut your crow's mouth, one child is enough. Do you think I'm a pig, giving birth to a whole litter?"
"Hehe, wasn't I thinking that having more children means more happiness and companionship? I'll take care of everything, as you say, so you don't have to worry about it. You can just relax and be a hands-off parent!"
Yu Lian then thought of something: "To be honest, you need to work harder now. Your brother-in-law is a teacher who can guide you. If you put in the effort, other people your age are already in college. Since you're not in good health, don't even think about joining the army. It's best to stay close to home, otherwise it will be inconvenient for you to come back and take care of the children."
Yu Xin took her sister's joke seriously and immediately started counting how many universities were near her home and which one was the closest.
"Sis, is someone like me even qualified to go?"
Yu Lian thought about it again and realized it made sense: "You still have to study hard. At least this is your last exam, and if you perform well at your workplace later, you might get a job."
It's clear that Yu Xin hasn't given up her playful spirit. Even at her age, she's still mentally like a child, constantly thinking about how to have fun. The moment she heard her sister mention her workplace, she instantly didn't want to graduate anymore.
"Sis, I don't want to go to work. How about we ask Dad to get me into school?"
Yu Lian hesitated to agree easily: "You have to ask Dad yourself. I don't know if he'd be willing." She had always been "someone else's child," never causing her parents any worry about her studies or work, and her parents always supported her opinions. But Yu Xin caused her parents constant worry at almost every stage of her life, without a moment's respite. She had a heart condition coupled with a restless personality, unable to sit still for even a moment.
"Well, think it over first, and then tell Dad when you've made your decision. I'm really not sure if he'll agree."
Yu Lian's words made Yu Xin hesitate: "That's true, I'd better not ask, lest it turn out to be unfeasible and I get lectured by him."
A week later, He Lin's housing application was quickly approved. The staff housing was located not far from the street, less than a ten-minute walk from the company entrance, and it was a relatively new building with good conditions.
After get off work, Yu Lian went to the place she had arranged to meet He Lin, and they went to their new home together. She was mentally prepared for the housing situation; before coming, she had prepared herself to accept anything as long as the conditions weren't too bad. And now it seemed alright.
"Your company values you that much? I've seen others work for over ten years and still not get such a high position."
He Lin said frankly, "I wouldn't dare let you suffer with me if the conditions weren't good. But compared to my family, it's nothing. I'm just glad you can accept it."
As the two were talking, someone came from behind: "Knock knock knock—Oh, this must be your sister-in-law? Hello, sister-in-law, I'm Liu Xu!"
He Lin was surprised; he hadn't expected Liu Xu to come looking for him. This was only his second time at this house, and Liu Xu didn't know it was there. The straightforward Liu Xu immediately explained, "Oh, I saw you two walking this way from a distance in the yard. I was thinking, since everyone has some time now, why don't you go to the logistics department and pick up some furniture? It'll take you forever to move it all by yourself!"
He Lin didn't refuse and nodded in agreement on the spot. He had originally thought it would be a simple house viewing, but suddenly the house was filled with many people. Thanks to the enthusiastic Liu Xu, the once empty house was furnished in every corner within half an hour. Yu Lian didn't move an inch throughout the process. However, she had learned some social etiquette from her mother and immediately went out to buy some cigarettes and soft drinks to offer to her colleagues who were helping.
"Thank you for your hard work, everyone. Please don't be shy. We'll treat you all to a meal once we officially move in."
"Sister-in-law, we'll be leaving now. We won't disturb you any longer. We look forward to your housewarming party!"
After everyone left, He Lin bent down to pick up the trash on the ground.
"It's over," Yu Lian exclaimed softly.
"What's wrong?" He Lin put down what he was holding and began to look around.
"I...can't cook. I can eat, but I'm not qualified to entertain guests."
Hearing her explanation, He Lin breathed a sigh of relief: "You don't need to worry, I can handle it all by myself. You just need to sit back and wait for dinner. I might need you to take care of my colleagues too."
"Look at what you're saying, as if I'm a guest." Yu Lian knew that He Lin didn't mean it that way, but someone had to break this fixed, distant way of getting along.
"I'm sorry, I'll be more careful next time."
Yu Lian turned around and sighed—it seemed that this road ahead was long and arduous.
After all that commotion, the two of them got home late. However, they didn't tell anyone else in their family. While everyone was home, Yu Lian pulled her mother aside and said, "Mom, I need to tell you something. I'm going to move out with He Lin."
Wang Meixia paused for a moment before realizing what was happening and asked, "When are you leaving? I'll pack your luggage."
After a few seconds of silence, Yu Lian asked incredulously, "Mom, you dislike me that much?"
"Hey... I'm just supporting you young people to live your own lives, aren't I?"
Yu Lian waved her hand: "Then you should give up on that idea. I stay at home on weekdays, and we only go to stay with He Lin when he's busy and doesn't have time off. He applied for an apartment at his workplace; it's a nice one-bedroom apartment, but not small, and it has everything you need."
Wang Meixia still felt uneasy and suggested going to take a look: "Okay, I'll take you when I have time."
Privately, Wang Meixia and her husband had long discussed their absurd marriage. As parents, they both hoped for a smooth life for their child and were ready to accept reality, but then the two of them got together. No one spoke of it, and they pretended there had been no incident at all.
"Live a good life and give me a grandson or granddaughter soon, just like your sister said."
Yu Lian nodded, but her true thought was to leave it to fate. Given He Lin's unhurried nature, it would be a long time before they had a child.
