Lunchtime.
The He family had no relatives in Yuncheng; the only relatives they could be considered related to were the Yu family, whom they had become in-laws through marriage. Wang Meixia had asked He Lin beforehand and only sent out invitations after confirming that they had no other plans. Holidays should always be celebrated in a lively atmosphere, and since she didn't want her daughter to spend the holiday away from home, she simply invited the entire He family over.
"Alright, everyone, don't be shy, sit down and eat. We're family, let's not stand on ceremony, everyone eat."
Li Ying and He Jianguo exchanged a glance, then said nothing, reaching for food. Actually, the couple didn't have much to say, just a sense of感慨—when they first established a relationship with the Yu family, they thought their son would suffer, that he would be suppressed and treated unfairly in this relationship where compromise was unavoidable. But later they were surprised to realize they had been petty and prejudiced. The Yu family hadn't let them suffer any hardship or grievance; in fact, they had made things better for them. From the youngest Yu Xin to the couple themselves, everyone in the Yu family had treated the He family with genuine kindness.
"Mother-in-law, my husband and I would like to toast you. Since your father-in-law isn't here, please drink two cups on his behalf."
When her in-laws across the street suddenly stood up to offer a toast, Wang Meixia quickly put down her chopsticks and stood up, saying, "Oh, don't be so polite. As long as the two children are doing well, that's all that matters. We parents shouldn't worry about or overthink the rest."
After remaining silent for a long time, He Jianguo insisted, "How could I not overthink it? Our family situation is complicated, and you've still gone to this extent. I'm truly grateful to my father-in-law for making an exception and treating everyone equally! I'll drink this first."
Then Li Ying said, "Thank you, my dear mother-in-law, for raising two outstanding daughters! Both of our children have benefited from your kindness, I accept it!" Li Ying dared not forget the kindness of her daughter-in-law and the kindness of saving her youngest daughter.
"Uncle and Aunt, please don't be shy, have some food!" Yu Xin stood up and put a piece of meat on each of the two elders' plates. She was very lively and familiar with these social etiquettes, handling them with maturity.
"Oh my, our Yu Xin has grown up so much!" Wang Meixia's teasing remark brought the atmosphere back to the cheerful mood from before.
The meal lasted a long time, with the elders chatting endlessly. This also made it easier for Yu Xin to take He Xinglan out to find some friends. He Xinglan didn't have many friends her age at home, and she didn't want to go anywhere else; there were plenty of people to play with in the compound. The couple sat side-by-side on the sofa reading the newspaper, occasionally discussing and sharing their opinions.
In the afternoon, Yu Jinbu returned from the military camp, but the elders hadn't yet left the table. His arrival and involvement made the already imminent banquet seem to stretch on indefinitely. Yu Lian thoughtfully reheated and added food, allowing the elders to continue their conversation.
"I'm going to buy some snacks to go with my drinks, you..."
"I'll go too."
Before Yu Lian could even ask, He Lin followed behind her. They walked side-by-side outside the house. However, Yu Lian's expression was no longer as relaxed as before—since what happened that night, she hadn't touched upon that core issue. The moment He Lin's parents bowed and expressed their gratitude at the dinner table, it reminded her of what that person had said that day: "The He family hasn't completely collapsed; they still have assets overseas"—was it true or false?
"He Lin, I don't know if I should bring this up. Was the agreement you signed that night real or fake?" Yu Lian didn't say it directly, but she was quite clear about the agreement.
"I don't know, I haven't asked my dad yet. But at the time I didn't dare say anything else, I signed it because they wanted me to. Now it seems they were just forcing me to make a choice."
After thinking for a moment, Yu Lian decided to be honest: "He Lin, why don't you ask him directly? As long as the policy doesn't change, no matter if you know people outside or have any other relationship, it's a thorn in your side, and it might become a bigger hidden danger at any time." Her thinking was realistic, but it was also for the sake of the two of them in the future. It doesn't matter now, but who knows what the future holds.
"I'll listen to you. But my dad must be drunk today. I'll talk to him alone in the next couple of days when it's a good time."
Without receiving a definite answer, Yu Lian already knew that it was probably true. Perhaps the person who looked exactly like He Lin was a relative from that side.
"Do you think this might have been done by your relatives? If your family is really rich, and you live so far away, maybe it's because of this."
He Lin couldn't find a suitable reason to explain his conjecture, nor did he deny Yu Lian's. Until the truth comes out, anything is possible.
"If my dad admits it, I'll tell you the truth in a simplified way. If not, we'll have to investigate later." The two hit it off immediately, and the matter was dropped.
The Dragon Boat Festival meal lasted until very late. That night, the He family of three stayed at the Yu family's house, while He Lin and Yu Lian returned to their own home. Wang Meixia, the only one who seemed somewhat sober, didn't stop them, but told them to be careful on the road.
"Take your flashlight and be careful on the road."
"Mom, get some rest. It's not far, don't worry."
Yu Lian sat on the back of the bicycle, her hand naturally wrapped around He Lin's waist. She'd gotten used to sitting on the back seat over the years, and it was an unconscious gesture when talking to her mother. He Lin was startled at first, feeling a slight itch where her arm was around him.
Yu Lian didn't realize she had done this until she had ridden quite a distance. But she quickly dismissed her awkward thoughts—now that they were a real couple, even if they weren't quite at the stage of being intimate yet, there was nothing wrong with reaching out and putting her arm around his waist.
"He Lin, would you mind if I hugged you?"
"Of course not, I like it when you hug me."
His words made Yu Lian laugh out loud: "Alright, I was just asking, and you're getting all nervous." After saying that, Yu Lian looked up at the sky and sighed: "That's good."
"What's so good?"
"My current life, my current state. Except for that incident a while ago which scared me, don't you think? By the way, didn't you notice that you even laughed? That means you feel the same way, right?"
"You're right, I won't let you suffer any injustice."
In the current context, Yu Lian subconsciously thought that He Lin was saying that he would not let her suffer in the marriage, but in fact He Lin was making a promise after hearing her say that she was "frightened".
Back home, the two took showers one after the other. When He Lin finished getting ready and came out of the bathroom, Yu Lian was sitting at the dressing table washing her face.
"Come on in, I'm not going to eat you, am I?"
He Lin nodded blankly and made up an excuse: "I'll come after I dry my hair."
After dawdling for half an hour, and with Yu Lian's repeated urging, He Lin finally dried his hair. Sleeping in the same bed, Yu Lian wanted to be straightforward and go with the flow, but she was afraid He Lin wouldn't agree—after all, he had voluntarily slept on the sofa outside just two days ago; if they were to break the ice now, wouldn't it be too fast?
"He Lin, um... if you're willing, how about we try... you know?"
In an instant, He Lin's ears turned bright red. He remained silent for a long time. Meanwhile, Yu Lian, who felt she had gone all out, was left only with the awkwardness of having misunderstood his feelings.
