Chapter 16 Searching for Magic
"Looking for a magician?"
Diana hovered in mid-air, the wind blowing through her long hair.
"The realm of magic is very complex, and most magicians are reclusive and dislike being disturbed by outsiders."
Li Zhen clutched the pocket of her clothes to her chest, her fingertips able to feel the faint warmth emanating from the golden apple—a sign that the magic had not yet completely subsided.
"I know, but the Goddess of Conflict fell into my hands this time, and luck played a bigger role—perhaps it's also because most gods inevitably have arrogance when facing mortals, but that doesn't mean I can always stay calm."
His tone was firm; those who had survived the trials of life and death on Witrum would never sit idly by and wait for their doom.
Looking at the composure in his eyes, Diana suddenly felt that his calm demeanor was more reliable than some of the impulsive members of the alliance.
"Okay, I'll contact Batman."
Without further hesitation, Diana raised her hand and activated the encrypted communicator on her wrist. A pale blue light shone on the surface of the metal bracelet, and a few seconds later, Batman's deep voice came from it, carrying his usual cold and hard texture.
"What is it?"
"Li Zhen is in trouble. She has been targeted by Eris, the goddess of discord, and has even obtained her artifact, the golden apple."
Diana explained the situation concisely.
"We need to find some magicians to find a way to counter Eris's resurrection and retaliate. We'd like to ask if you have any relevant clues."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the communicator, followed by Batman's voice, which carried a hint of barely perceptible seriousness.
"The Golden Apple? Eris's personal artifact?"
"Yes, Li Zhen just clashed with her head-on and shattered her mortal divine body, but her true form is still in the divine realm and could be resurrected at any time."
Diana added.
"We'd like to speak with you in person. Would you like to go to the bat cave?"
"no."
Batman's refusal was firm and unequivocal.
"Don't bring him to the bat cave."
Li Zhen raised an eyebrow, keenly sensing the wariness in the other person's tone.
Diana was also somewhat surprised.
"Why? The Bat Cave has a high enough security level."
"During the time you encountered Eris, my surveillance system in Boston experienced a signal outage for a full four minutes and twenty-three seconds."
Batman's voice was cold.
He paused, then spoke directly to Li Zhen.
"Then I heard your entire conversation, Lee Jung, you showed me a side of yourself that is completely inconsistent with your age."
Batman's meaning is quite clear.
His thinking ability, foresight, and control over the situation make him a perfect fit for the role of an alien agent.
Li Zhen's risk level has now been raised again on the watch list.
"Are you going to say these things in front of a child?"
Diana was clearly quite familiar with Batman's character and couldn't help but offer some advice.
"You really think he's still a child? He's more mature than Green Lantern and Shazam combined."
Li Zhen seemed completely unconcerned. He spoke calmly, his voice transmitted through Diana's communicator.
"We have a common problem now, so let's deal with the immediate hidden dangers first."
The voice on the other end of the communicator stopped, and Batman seemed to be weighing his options.
After a moment, he offered a new solution.
"We'll meet at the watchtower. The coordinates have been sent to your communicator."
"A watchtower?"
Diana was taken aback.
"Didn't you say the watchtower was still under construction?"
"Bring him here."
Batman offered no explanation and simply hung up the call.
Diana put away the communicator, her face showing confusion, but she still nodded to Li Zhen.
"Let's go, are you able to move around in space?"
"...Professor Prince, I come from a cosmic-level war race. Didn't you even look at my file?"
Diana was already feeling powerless. She even felt that Li Zhen was sometimes like Batman, and because of the boy's appearance, the interrogation she posed was even more speechless than Batman's interrogation.
"I just knew someone needed help, so I came."
The two accelerated simultaneously, broke through the clouds, and flew towards outer space.
Before long, a huge space station suspended in geosynchronous orbit came into view.
The watchtower is entirely silver-gray with a highly futuristic design. Its massive solar panels gleam with a metallic sheen in the sunlight, and it is surrounded by several energy shields that emit a faint blue light.
We passed through the energy shield and entered the watchtower.
Diana sighed at the "technology," but Li Zhen didn't seem to feel much about it.
Vitrum has an even more magnificent satellite fortress.
The spacious passageway was lined with sophisticated instruments, and holographic projections flickered in mid-air. The entire space station was operating in an orderly manner, showing no signs of being "still under construction".
Diana's brow furrowed even more as she followed the guiding robot toward the conference room, muttering complaints under her breath as she went.
"This guy has been lying to us for so long."
Li Zhen asked curiously.
"What's wrong?"
"Batman has always told us that the Watchtower is still under construction and testing and has not been officially put into use, so the Justice League can only hold meetings in Justice Hall in New York."
Diana's tone was tinged with helplessness.
"But as you know, the United Nations almost always sends warnings about the potential for panic and risks to the public when a group of superpowered individuals gather in densely populated New York."
She sighed.
"The other members are mostly anonymous, but I have the official title of Paradise Island's ambassador for external exchanges. Those warning emails are always sent directly to me, and all the pressure is on me."
As they spoke, the two walked into the conference room.
Batman was already seated in the main seat, his black suit blending into the dim environment, with only the bat symbol faintly visible under the light.
When he saw them come in, he simply pointed his finger, indicating that they should sit down, without offering any explanation of the watchtower's significance.
Diana was about to question him when Batman interrupted her.
"Let's get down to business. The golden apple is on you?"
His gaze was fixed directly on Li Zhen's chest.
Li Zhen nodded.
"I learned about the dangers of this stuff from Mr. Prince, so I didn't intend to give it to anyone for safekeeping, to avoid any unforeseen complications."
"Do you want to find a magician to break its spell, or find a way to deal with Eris?"
"Batman asked."
"Yes."
Li Zhen spoke frankly.
"I need a list of magic users. Since you're even monitoring a fourteen-year-old alien survivor, it seems you're the only one in the Justice League capable of providing this list."
Batman's gaze darkened, but he did not deny it.
He raised his hand and pressed a few buttons on the control panel in front of him, and a holographic screen appeared out of thin air, displaying two documents.
I won't give you the full list.
Batman's voice is cold.
"Some magicians are just as dangerous as Eris. Getting involved with them will only cause more trouble."
In short, these two are relatively controllable, and Batman believes they should be helpful.
Li Zhen's gaze fell on the screen.
The title of the first document is "Dr. Fate".
The location is marked below: Celan, Massachusetts, USA.
The information states that Doctor Fate possesses powerful, mysterious abilities, but his whereabouts are unpredictable.
The city of Seren, where he is located, has experienced some spatial fluctuations, so the data indicates that Doctor Fate himself is difficult to track.
However, Doctor Fate has also appeared before the world several times, using magic to solve some problems, and he is suspected of being associated with a hero organization that is no longer active.
Upon seeing this name, Li Zhen's heart stirred.
He had some impressions of Doctor Fate from his past life, and knew that he was an extremely powerful being. He originally planned to make him a priority to visit, but he didn't know his exact address.
Now, with the precise information provided by Batman, he silently memorized Doctor Fate's name, and the location of Ciarán City was instantly pinpointed in his mind.
He then turned to the second document.
The information in this document is relatively brief, consisting of only a blurry surveillance screenshot showing a thin, gray-robed figure that appears to be female based on her build.
According to the information, this person occasionally appears in Gotham City at night, has no fixed activity pattern, and is skilled at using magic to hide his identity.
"I've been investigating this gray-robed man for a long time."
Batman explained.
"She is not aggressive and occasionally steals food, but there are three records showing that she has helped homeless people who were about to freeze or starve to death. Among all magic-related beings, she has the lowest threat level and is relatively safe."
Li Zhen stared at the blurry screenshot, lost in thought.
Gotham City... that's Batman's territory. If even he can't catch someone, this grey-robed man's ability to hide must be quite strong.
"These two documents are enough for you to take action now."
Batman turned off the holographic screen.
"If you encounter any problems you can't solve, contact me. But remember, don't provoke other magic users. The magic world on Earth is more complicated than you think."
Diana finally couldn't help but speak up.
"Aren't you going to explain about the watchtower?"
"We'll talk about the watchtower later."
Batman interrupted her again, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"The focus now is on resolving the issues of the Golden Apple and Eris. The meeting is adjourned, and you may leave."
Li Zhen glanced at the two locked in a stalemate and stood up.
"I'll go to Seren City to find Dr. Fate. Professor Prince, thank you for bringing me here."
After saying that, he turned and walked towards the exit of the watchtower.
Diana glared at Batman helplessly, but had no choice but to follow.
The conference room fell silent again, with only one black figure sitting in the main seat, the stillness almost suffocating.
