Chapter 256 Running Around
Chapter 256 Running Around
Li Zhen and Jason slipped into the apartment one after the other.
Wilson, with a wad of garbage stuffed in his mouth, was thrown off Li Zhen's shoulder.
The poor middle-aged man groaned and tried to bounce around a couple of times with his fat belly, but his hands and feet were tightly bound by Jason's restraints, which were specifically designed for dangerous criminals.
So in the end, all he could do was jump around like that.
Realizing that all his efforts were in vain, Wilson looked at the two figures in the dimly lit living room with a mixture of resentment and fear.
At first, he thought the guy in all white coming from behind must be a superhero, and even tried to ask him for help.
The white hooded man didn't even glance at him; instead, he frowned and questioned the red-hooded man about why he hadn't just killed him outright.
What he thought was the red hood of a cold-blooded, perverted killer was simply that it gagged him and tied him up.
The two of them zipped around, carrying the dizzy and disoriented Wilson to this desolate apartment.
"I did as you said, and followed the energy signals related to Apokolips."
Red Hood's voice came through the mask, sounding somewhat hoarse.
"After you left, I modified a tracking radar that can detect the energy fluctuations of Parademons and Mother Boxes. I originally thought I could find the Dark Side Club directly, but the results were not satisfactory."
Red Hood stopped, turned around, and did something—the mask began to slowly retract as if it were alive.
Wilson was startled. His mumbling, which had been stopped, immediately fell silent. His eyes widened and he began to roll on the ground.
He didn't want to see anything he shouldn't have, and in the end, he was killed to silence him.
The already wrinkled shirt was now covered in dust, and Wilson finally rolled to the corner of the room, contentedly beginning to face the wall.
The sound continued, as if the two people, one in black and one in white, were completely unaware of his actions.
"I went to the three signal points that the radar had locked onto one by one. I thought they were the strongholds of the Dark Side Club, but when I got there, I found that they were not cult organizations at all, but just a group of ordinary people."
"Ordinary people?"
Li Zhen raised an eyebrow, a hint of doubt flashing in her eyes.
"Can an ordinary person emit energy fluctuations similar to those of a Parademon?"
"Sorry, I didn't explain clearly. What I meant was, not long ago, they were all just the most inconspicuous..."
An ordinary Gotham citizen.
Jason leaned against the only clean wall he had cleaned and took out his homemade radar from his pocket.
"They are all Gotham citizens who were lucky enough to retain their superpowers after the Amozzo virus incident."
"They spontaneously formed small groups, hiding in various corners of Gotham, as if deliberately avoiding something."
He paused, his fingertip gliding lightly across the radar screen.
"At first I thought they were just afraid of being targeted by the government or the Justice League. Conspiracy theories are rampant in this country, after all, no one wants to be studied as a monster."
"But after following them for two days, we discovered that things weren't that simple."
"Their vigilance is ridiculously poor. They clearly want to avoid me, but they always manage to leave various traces. They're like a bunch of headless flies, just blindly hiding."
"What's even stranger is that while these people were still in the hospital, their initial thought was to return to a normal life, but they inexplicably developed all sorts of dark ideas and put them into action immediately after being discharged."
Jason's eyes turned cold as he recalled the scenes he had witnessed.
"Some gangs use superpowers to rob shops, and some guys even turn around and start killing innocent people after proving their abilities, treating Gotham as their playground."
Li Zhen listened with a frown, scratching her palm with the tip of her left index finger.
"Um, first of all, I'm not being discriminatory, but these things you're talking about are quite common in Gotham, aren't they?"
Li Zhen raised her arm and waved it.
"What scarecrow, riddle teller, watchmaker—"
"Aside from a few people with congenital mental illnesses, most Gotham residents aren't actually that extreme!"
Jason first retorted loudly, then took a deep breath to calm himself down, and his tone returned to normal.
"Most of them have harmonious families, loved ones who give and receive love, and their education level isn't so high that it's detached from worldly norms. It's not normal for such people to suddenly become serial killers just because they gain superpowers!"
Li Zhen scratched the back of her head and smiled somewhat embarrassedly.
He then realized that his way of thinking, which directly categorized things based on cartoon stereotypes, was indeed one-sided.
"Okay, you're right. It's really unacceptable for a group of ordinary people to suddenly turn into antisocial lunatics before experiencing what is called a bad day."
"The most despicable group is one of them."
Jason's tone still held a hint of suppressed anger.
"They realized I was investigating them and, fearing retribution, they actually plotted to kidnap the orphanage, hoping to use the children as hostages to force me to give up the investigation."
Li Zhen promptly offered a compliment.
"An orphanage?"
"Yes, it's a private welfare home in the suburbs of Gotham, invested by the Wayne Group, to deal with emergencies, like this one; and of course, thanks to you, Gotham didn't suffer any particularly significant casualties during this largest-scale virus outbreak."
Jason's expression softened considerably as he spoke, and he even nodded slightly to Li Zhen, which was why he would unconditionally help or participate in Li Zhen's actions.
"It's full of orphans whose parents died in some of the chaos of the past."
"When I arrived, they had already taken control of the orphanage, and three children had been injured by their superpowers."
Jason remained silent for a short while after what happened next.
Li Zhen could roughly imagine that it was a brutal and bloody one-sided massacre. Ordinary people who gained superpowers would be no match for Red Hood, especially since Red Hood only used guns because he liked them, and he actually had a lot of superpowers hidden away.
"It was at that moment that I realized these so-called lucky ones weren't lucky at all; the reason they were able to retain their superhuman abilities was because..."
Their abilities are most likely due to the fact that the Amozzo virus, while modifying their bodies, also distorted their minds.
At this point, a ruthless glint flashed in Jason's eyes.
"I took action to eliminate those gangs, thinking that would keep the Dark Side Club from showing up."
He picked up the radar again, and the screen, which had been cleared, began to show scattered red dots again, like bamboo shoots after a spring rain, appearing more and more frequently.
"These red dots have reappeared, and there are more of them than before, and they are more scattered."
Li Zhen raised her eyebrows.
"It seems someone is up to no good in the dark. He already knew the direction of your investigation and deliberately used these half-baked superpowered individuals to confuse you and make your endless pursuit fruitless."
Looking at the constantly jumping red dots on the radar screen, Li Zhen, who had just killed a group of formidable opponents on Apokolips, was not about to be tempted by these ordinary people.
"You've got some tricks up your sleeve, knowing how to use these small fry to wear you down. Don't you have any way to deal with that?"
"In my original universe, I knew a few reliable employment organizations that specialized in detecting and investigating anomalous creatures. They were proficient in everything, whether it was technology, witchcraft, or magic."
Jason's tone softened somewhat.
"I tried to contact them in this world, using a secret code known only to both of us to gain their trust. Then I disinfected and packaged the bodies of those dead superhumans and sent them to them so they could have comprehensive medical examinations to see what the Amozzo virus had done to their bodies. I should be able to get the examination reports in the next few days."
Li Zhen's gaze became somewhat meaningful.
Jason was transferred to this universe after his resurrection, which means that while he was still serving as the second Robin, he learned to defy Batman and secretly made many connections that the Batman family should theoretically prohibit.
Jason ignored Li Zhen's gaze and looked toward the corner of the room.
The rain outside the window was still drizzling.
"But just yesterday, or more precisely, the day before yesterday morning, I discovered a special being: Wilson Morgan."
