Chapter 14: Prelude to the Ivy League
Xiu En sat down on an old sofa that was still usable.
After Jerami finally managed to swallow the first bite, still clutching the steamed bun in his hand, he finally had the spare brainpower to take a look at Hugh's current appearance.
"Was that scary light you created? I saw it, it was to the west, it was so bright it looked like someone dropped a nuclear bomb."
"I don't have that ability, I just went to sunbathe."
Xiu En started rambling on and on, his gaze sweeping across the gloomy sky outside the bridge arch.
"The sun felt I was cold, so it came out to look at me."
Forget it.
Jerami rolled his eyes.
But the steamed bun in his hand was so substantial that his words lacked any real force to refute.
"But there are definitely a lot of cops and gangsters heading that way right now. You'd better stay here and hide for a while."
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Xiu En leaned deeper into the sofa, where the incredibly hard spring was pressing against his lower back.
"Jerami, keep an eye on things outside for me. Especially those wearing cloaks or those that like to fly around at night."
"As long as there's enough of these hot white dough balls, I'd be willing to do anything, even take a dump at the police station, let alone keep watch."
Jeremy finally managed to open a bottle of water, took a swig, and let out a huge burp.
Hearing Jerami's casual tone, Joestar's forehead veins throbbed twice.
"ignorance."
He muttered to himself.
"You have no idea what you ate; it was power, it was truth."
"That's food, you lunatic."
Jeremy took another bite, squinting his eyes in satisfaction.
Shuen leaned back on the sofa, watching Jerami lick the last crumbs of bread into his mouth.
"Are you full?"
"It hit the mark."
Jeremy patted his belly, which wasn't bulging much.
His face was full of happiness.
"Even if I were captured by that two-faced Harvey Dent and made to play a coin-flipping game, I wouldn't have any regrets."
"Now that you're full, let's move around a bit."
Xiu En pointed to the rain curtain outside the bridge arch.
"Go outside and see where those guys in black cloaks or blue uniforms have found. If they've searched this place, at least we can escape five minutes earlier."
"I'm a scout, not someone sent to my death."
Jeremy muttered
"But considering how delicious your food is... fine."
Although the kid complained, he was quick to act.
He skillfully zipped his jacket all the way up, tucking most of his face into the collar.
But just before emerging from this relatively dry haven, Jerami stopped, glanced back at Hugh, and then warily looked at Joestar beside him.
"Brother Xiuen."
Jerami lowered his voice.
It seemed to be to make sure that the other orphans around weren't eavesdropping.
"Since I ate your food, we're on the same side. I can also tell you're a capable person; the commotion in the sky just now couldn't be caused by an ordinary pervert."
Get to the point.
Joestar interrupted coldly.
"The point is, if you really want to hide safely in this rotten place in the West End, it won't be enough for me and these kids to keep watch."
"You need to go and pay your respects to the powerful figures in the area."
"I don't remember Gotham having any docks now, besides the Penguin and Falcone."
Xiu En raised an eyebrow. If it were that mob boss, he'd probably have to consider whether the $520 he had left was enough to buy a grenade and kill himself.
"Not one of those cigar-smoking big shots, but our boss."
When Jerami uses this title.
His face held an almost longing trust.
"She's different... even more amazing than the fact that you glow. She'll protect every child who ends up here. Since you give us food, you're one of us too."
"name?"
"We call her Sister Pamela, or Ivy. Nobody dares to mess with her territory here, not even those gangsters from before."
Jeremy lowered his voice.
He made a tangling motion as if he were a thief caught in the act.
"Because of the plants around here, listen to her."
Before Xiu En could react to the name, the long-dormant system interface popped up in a very inconsiderate way.
[Side Quest Intelligence Analysis]
Although Shaohao is the god of metal, the five elements interact in a cycle of mutual generation and restraint. Metal overcomes wood, yet wood is the source of fire. In this damp and shady place, if one can find a wisp of vibrant "wood energy" to assist in the process, although one cannot directly face the true yang, it can still create an oxygen-rich mini-greenhouse for you in this city that resembles a giant morgue.
[Current objective updated: Proceed to meet Pamela Ivy, "Friends of the Forest".]
Xiu En calmly closed the system window that was spouting nonsense.
Pamela Ivy.
Poison Ivy.
One of Gotham's future supervillains, who now sounds like...
Or is she a kindergarten principal leading a group of children to survive in the ruins?
Is there something wrong with this setup? Or is it because she's too young, and that world-destroying environmentalism hasn't yet taken hold of her mind?
"plant?"
Joestar, who had been silent until now, let out a sneer, as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world.
"My God, this kid must have lost his mind from being soaked in the rain. Even moss dies in this godforsaken place, what plant can possibly listen to a human? Only light is everything!"
"Shut up, Joestar."
Xiu interrupted the believer, who was even more verbose than the system.
"Plants are the sun's most loyal followers."
Xiu En straightened his collar. If he could find an ally who could manipulate plants, it would be better than leading a bunch of kids who could only throw stones, whether it was farming, raising livestock, or building defenses.
Hugh waved to Jerami, who was still there.
"When you come back from gathering information, take me to meet this... Miss Ivy."
"Okay!"
Jerami seemed pleased that Shum hadn't refused.
"I'll be right back, don't wander off. Follow this drainage ditch in, and when you see the unusually green area, that's the boss's territory. But it's safer to wait for me to come back and take you in, those green guard dogs at the gate... they're not very good-tempered."
After he finished speaking, he plunged into the rain and disappeared instantly into the misty Gotham morning fog.
Only Joestar remained, still glaring resentfully in the direction where Jerami had disappeared.
"Sir, these so-called superhumans of unknown origin are most likely victims of Gotham's chemical emissions."
"Are we going to a place full of chemical waste? I'm afraid it will offend your eyes."
"Jostar".
"Don't you think it's a very healthy thing to see some greenery in this city?"
Hopefully, this Poison Ivy girl from the "starter village" hasn't developed a personality as terrible as a thorny rose.
