Chapter 9 Preparatory Load Experts
Most summer camp students probably don't know that the cafeteria on the B1 floor of Dongyu Building is open 24 hours a day.
However, Chang Jian said smugly, "I asked the receptionist, and I even added her on QQ."
Song Xingye looked on with admiration.
This is a real bull.
While they were eating, Chang Jian asked enviously, "Hoshino... hey, is it okay for me to call you that...? I heard you won a gold medal at this year's CTOC competition, that's amazing!"
"There's nothing to brag about, just a slight edge."
Song Xingye remained calm and composed.
"Hey, that's something to brag about! The students from the Seven Aerospace Engineering Group were completely humiliated by Jiaotong University. They're all determined to win back their pride next year!"
Song Xingye chuckled sheepishly, realizing that he had unwittingly put pressure on his future juniors.
After silently lighting a candle for them in my heart, I heard Chang Jian say:
"Our dorm is full of hidden talents this time. Apart from you, everyone else is a star student at our school."
Song Xingye joked, "Wow, you're quite the intelligence expert. You've figured everything out in just half a day? You're wasting your talent at Dongyu Group; you should be working for the National Security Bureau."
"Hehe, we're here to make friends, the more the merrier."
Chang Jian said confidently, "Although the selection process for the Starry Sky Summer Camp is very tough, only the best can get in. Dongyu Group is reluctant to actually eliminate anyone, and Dongfang Group next door is just waiting to pick up the scraps. So at most, everyone will just become ordinary interns, and we'll still have to work together in the future."
Song Xingye nodded, "That makes sense."
"So...gold always shines. Maybe someone I meet today will become a group leader one day? As for me, I'll try to make as many friends as possible and add as many people on QQ before I'm eliminated. If one of them becomes the chief engineer in the future, I can brag, 'That was the brother who slept in the bunk above me.'"
"Then good luck."
Song Xingye smiled and continued eating.
Chang Jian, being quite talkative, steered the conversation back to the topic, saying:
"Among my roommates, Cao Que is from the University of Birmingham and I heard he interned at the European Space Agency for a while. Then there's Guo Yanyang, who's a super student at Beihang University, winning gold medals in all sorts of competitions."
"Tao Shuo, from Northwestern Polytechnical University, this guy must be someone with connections. I heard his dad is a leader in the group."
"And then there's Fan Xiaoying, from Harbin Institute of Technology. I heard he already passed the early admission interview for Dongfang Group, but then voluntarily withdrew and came to Dongyu Group for the summer camp instead. He interned at a research institute during his undergraduate studies, and in his first year of graduate school, he published a paper as the sole author in a core journal. He's a hidden genius..."
Song Xingye almost choked on his food. "Comrade Chang Jian, if I gave you a few more days, would you be able to go through all eighteen generations of your roommates' ancestors?"
"Hehe, it's not that bad." Chang Jian scratched his head. "Anyway, this is a battle of gods. I'm counting on you to pull me along, Hoshino."
"Come on, don't you know we're competitors?" Song Xingye said.
"No, no!"
Chang Jian explained in a serious tone: "This summer camp uses a points-based ranking system plus a bottom-ranking elimination system. Each round of assessments will score students based on their performance, and then the students at the bottom will be eliminated."
Even though we're competitors, we can team up sometimes. I promise I won't hold you back. If you say go east, I'll go west. Just help me get some points, I don't want to be eliminated in the early rounds...
Song Xingye said "Oh," having gained new knowledge.
He really wants to write a letter to the security bureau now, urging them to take Chang Jian away as soon as possible.
With such talent, why stay here and build rockets and missiles? It's a waste of his abilities!
After the meal, the two went to the lobby on the first floor to pick up their suitcases, left the Dongyu Building, and strolled all the way to the family compound.
Inside the glass guard booth at the entrance stood two armed "security guards," their uniforms impeccably tailored, their eyes fixed straight ahead, looking like two mannequins.
As soon as Song Xingye and Chang Jian approached, a guard armed himself and stood solemnly, saying in a stern voice:
"Stop! Who are you looking for?"
The two immediately took out their temporary passes and handed them to the other party for inspection before being allowed to pass.
"Alright, go in."
Two guards cleared the way, and Chang Jian, trying to strike up a conversation with them, was unsurprisingly chased away.
Song Xingye smirked and said, "How about it? Even a social butterfly has her off days?"
Chang Jian wasn't aggrieved at all, comforting himself: "Hey, if you walk by the river often enough, you're bound to get your shoes wet. It's only when you live in such a heavily guarded residential compound that you feel safe!"
The two wandered around the residential compound for a while before finding Unit 1 of Building 7. They then carried their suitcases up five floors before finally entering the apartment.
Song Xingye nodded to his four roommates, Cao Que, Guo Yanyang, Tao Shuo, and Fan Xiaoying, as a way of greeting them.
Chang Jian, however, reverted to his old ways and started chatting with the four of them in the living room again.
Song Xingye made up the bed, lay down on it, took out his phone, and first called home to tell his parents that he wouldn't be going back for summer vacation.
After hanging up the phone, I played Angry Birds for a while, then took a towel and went to the bathroom to take a shower.
When I came out, the people chatting in the living room had already left.
Upon hearing Song Xingye's commotion, Cao Que was the first to run out carrying a washbasin. He gave Song Xingye a restrained smile before immediately disappearing into the bathroom.
After returning to his room, Chang Jian was having a long phone conversation with his girlfriend when he saw his roommate come back. He quickly got up and went to the balcony to chat.
So Song Xingye didn't know what time the couple had been talking.
He lay down on the bed, and the fatigue from the bumpy ride on the green train washed over him, and he quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, the six people in the dormitory got up, washed up, and went out almost at the same time.
Before 8 o'clock, we rushed from the family compound to Dongyu Group. After having breakfast on the basement floor, we went to the multi-functional conference hall on the eighth floor.
Coach Li Ang was already waiting there.
After everyone had arrived, they first went through the roster, and then got down to business:
"Mr. Liang and his team are very busy with work, so they won't be coming to the summer camp often. I'll be in charge of the specific tasks. Of course, they will personally oversee the questions and scores for each round of assessments, so the instructors will be watching everyone's performance."
"Then, starting today, the first round of assessments for the Starry Sky Summer Camp officially begins!"
Before announcing the questions, let me reiterate the rules: to stay here, you need not only intelligence, but also resilience, meticulousness, and teamwork.
"Here, you are not interns of the group, but are collectively referred to as 'Preparatory Load Experts'. The points you earn through the assessment are called fuel points."
"In each round of assessment, the more fuel points one accumulates, the higher one's ranking will be. The seven people with the lowest fuel points in each round will be eliminated."
"Furthermore, during the summer camp, any behavior that violates the bottom line of aerospace, such as concealing the truth, shirking responsibility, or falsifying results, will result in the immediate termination of the candidate's qualification as a payload specialist, without any room for negotiation! Those who dare to report such behavior will receive 20% of the fuel value of those who are eliminated."
"Ultimately, the top 10 performers based on fuel value will receive a formal offer from Dongyu Group, along with a market-based annual salary of no less than 20 yuan and a one-time talent subsidy of 30 yuan, and will be included in the group's talent pool..."
"The top-ranked student will have their name engraved in the time capsule of my country's new-generation Mars probe, which will launch at the end of the year, and will remain on Mars forever to witness humanity's future!"
After he finished speaking, a murmur of admiration and envy rippled through the crowd.
Even Song Xingye was surprised.
The victor's reward is far too tempting.
Annual salary and residency status may be mundane things, but leaving one's name on Mars? For aerospace workers, that's the ultimate romance and honor!
After explaining the rules, Instructor Li got down to business and revealed the questions for the first round of assessment.
He was seen in the front row of the multi-functional conference hall, lifting a cloth from the table to reveal a thick stack of bound documents.
Chang Jian looked puzzled and said, "Why are there so many booklets printed? Are we going to have a test for the first round? How many questions will we have to do?"
Then, a sly smile flashed across Li Ang's face.
"Dear students, next, each of you will receive a set of 10 booklets, which contains a total of 500 pages of test data for a certain carrier rocket before its launch."
"Please rest assured, all the data has been anonymized, and it's fine for you to take it home to your family."
"The test data package contains three extremely difficult-to-detect logical errors or data deviations, such as a sensor value being within the allowable range but showing an abnormal trend. This is just an example, don't take it too seriously."
The crowd chuckled softly.
Li Ang continued:
"In the first round of assessment, everyone is required to find these three errors within a three-day time limit, analyze the possible consequences of these three errors on the rocket launch, and provide reasonable suggestions for improvement."
"In short, in three days and with 500 pages of test data, we found three errors and 'returned to their source'!"
"In addition, these 80 booklets on site are not exactly the same. Although they come from the test data of the same launch vehicle, General Manager Liang and his team have made some careful adjustments to assess everyone's level."
"So don't even think about secretly copying other people's answers. The booklets you receive might be different. Of course, if anyone is copying answers, please report it. I will handle it impartially and punish them severely."
"Then, let's begin the first round of assessment!"
