Chapter 37 Preparing for Human Trafficking
After lunch, Han Yi called assistant director Du Zhe over: "Old Du, the crew is in your hands now. Lead the team back to the Beijing Film Studio and set up the interior scenes. Make sure to keep the film reels safe."
He handed over the storyboard, saying, "Producer Chen and I have other things to take care of. We'll meet at the Beijing Film Studio on the 18th."
Du Zhe accepted this heavy responsibility and nodded emphatically.
Han Yi then said goodbye to Gao Qiang, Zhao Bin, Dao Rong, Li Xiang, and the makeup artist, Xiao Li, in turn. When he came to Jiang Wu, this rugged Hebei man said with a hint of shyness:
"Director Han, I'm sorry, my brother has caused you trouble."
"Let's not talk about this," Han Yi interrupted him, pulling him aside.
"Senior, we're a student crew, so we might not be very attentive in many ways. Please bear with us. Also, please keep an eye on Du Zhe and the others on the way back; I'm still a little worried."
"Don't worry, leave it to me," Jiang Wu readily agreed.
Han Yi finally walked up to Fan Xiaopang. Looking at how thin she had become from all the stress, he couldn't help but laugh:
"On set, you call me Director Han, but off set, I call you Little Fatty Sister. Don't hold a grudge against me."
Fan Xiaopang gave her a flirtatious wink and said in a sweet voice, "Little brother Han Yi~ How could a weak woman like me dare to cause trouble for the director?"
After saying that, she pulled Chen Chen aside and complained, "Chenchen, your man is so fierce on set, can you control him when you sleep at night?"
Chen Chen was a year ahead of Han Yi and hadn't yet developed a thick skin, so she immediately blushed: "Sister Fan, what are you saying? Han Yi and I aren't like that at all."
After a round of laughter and chatter, the group said goodbye in Shexian County and set off on their respective journeys.
Han Yi took Chen Chen back to his hometown, paid off the principal and interest of the mortgaged house, and added her name to the property certificate.
That night, the two stayed in the "brand new" house.
In the midst of their passionate embrace, Han Yi held her close, his voice low and gentle: "Chenchen, if I ever..."
Chen Chen reached out and covered his mouth, tears welling in her eyes: "I understand... that's just how this industry is. I understand what you mean by what you did today."
"Chenchen, I..."
"Stop talking."
She gently shook her head. "I want this house, and the one inside Jimen... You're not allowed to bring any other women back with you in the future."
"it is good."
Han Yi said nothing more, only holding her even tighter.
……
On the morning of June 18, Han Yi returned to the Beijing Film Studio.
During this period, the residents of Chaoyang District have been enjoying the gossip non-stop, and the "Red Bean Incident" has been escalating.
Wu Baige's "Windtalkers" has also been released, and it's probably this film that bankrupted MGM.
Wu Baige, you are a great man, just don't come back and cause trouble for the mainland.
Han Yi walked along the sidewalk at the Beijing Film Studio, thinking:
"Han Shanping has always wanted to make blockbusters. With the release of 'Hero' in December, his ambition for blockbusters became even more unstoppable. First, he was dealt a blow by Kai's 'The Promise,' and then those Hong Kong directors came back one by one to fleece him..."
Thinking of this, Han Yi sighed deeply and said softly, "Alas, the world is going to the dogs, and people's hearts are no longer what they used to be!"
What do you mean by "people's hearts are no longer what they used to be"?
"Is the world going downhill?"
Two sudden voices interrupted my thoughts.
Han Yi looked around and saw the little fox Shu Chang and the sweet-voiced Liu Yifei following behind him.
He patted his chest: "When did you two appear out of nowhere? You scared me half to death!"
Shu Chang hopped over to Han Yi and said playfully, "Guess what? Senior Han Yi~"
Liu Yifei said softly, "Changchang and I went out to buy snacks and happened to see you come in."
She held up the bottle of AD calcium milk in her hand. "Senior, would you like some?"
Han Yi twitched the corner of his mouth: "Am I, a grown man, still drinking milk?"
He waved his hand in refusal and asked, "You don't have any scenes to film today?"
"Yes, in the afternoon," Shu Chang replied.
"So what are you doing here this morning?"
Shu Chang looked at Liu Yifei and raised her hand: "Qianqian, can I say something?"
"Of course not!"
The two little girls immediately started playing around.
"If you have nothing to do, come watch me film," Han Yi said, striding towards the studio.
Shu Chang and Liu Yifei quickly followed, chattering all the way:
"Senior, I forgot to ask last time, what movie are you filming?"
"TV series or movie?"
"How many actors are there?"
Are there more men or women?
"Is she a big star?"
Han Yi thought the fifteen-year-old girl was talking too much, so he quickened his pace and left with a remark:
"You'll know when you see it for yourself."
The Beijing Film Studio has four sound stages. The medium-sized stage used for "The Story of a Noble Family" was the one specifically for filming period dramas.
Many movies were filmed here until the Beijing Film Academy's Huairou campus was built, at which point the Beijing Film Studio gradually closed down.
The shed they rented for *Selaginella* was the smallest one. As soon as Han Yi entered, he saw a flurry of activity inside.
Assistant director Du Zhe was watching the camera crew install and test equipment; the props team had set up a simple hospital interior; and makeup artist Xiao Li was organizing her bottles and jars.
Upon seeing Han Yi enter, everyone stepped forward to greet him. He led his two "tagalongs" on a tour, confirming that all preparations were complete, and then prepared to begin filming the hospital scenes in "Selaginella".
This scene depicts Old Man Zhong (played by Jiang Wu) taking Shan Ju (played by Fan Xiaopang) to the obstetrics and gynecology department for a check-up.
The two extras—a doctor and a nurse—were recruited from the acting department: Zhao Ke and Nai Liang, who got the roles for free.
After the four of them changed into their costumes, Han Yi checked them one last time and said to the props team, "Get them both masks to wear, otherwise they'll look too young."
Everything was ready. Han Yi, carrying a megaphone, pulled up a small stool and sat down.
"One take in the hospital scene, action!"
Plot unfolds:
"Why won't you let me go in with my wife?" Jiang Wu asked gruffly.
"It's a hospital rule that family members can't accompany patients during obstetric and gynecological examinations," replied the nurse, played by Nai Liang.
"No way, that's my wife, I have to stay with her!" Jiang Wu insisted irritably, but in reality, he wanted to keep a close eye on the wife he had bought.
Zhao Ke, who plays a doctor, wore a mask and said in a muffled voice, "If the family members don't cooperate, we'll call security." After saying that, he winked at the nurse.
Jiang Wu immediately wilted, sheepishly retreating to the back and falling silent.
Zhao Ke led Shan Ju (Fan Xiaopang) into the cubicle examination room.
The camera pans smoothly to the side, and the dialogue continues:
"Doctor, please... save me."
As soon as he entered the room, Fan Xiaopang knelt down with a thud and began to sob softly.
Then she told him everything that had happened to her. The doctor agreed to help her and prepared to take her away through a side door.
"Okay, that's a good take. Let's do one more. This time, zoom in with the camera, close-up shot, I need to see the micro-expressions on the actors' faces."
Han Yi shouted through a megaphone, glancing back at the two "tagalongs".
Shu Chang and Liu Yifei somehow brought over two small stools and sat obediently to his side and behind him. This was their first time seeing the film set from the director's perspective, and their eyes were filled with novelty and focus.
After filming this scene, the crew started changing locations. The next scene was about human traffickers abducting the female lead.
"Alright, that's enough for this morning, time for lunch!"
Everyone went to the script supervisor, Li Xiang, to collect their "lunchbox" (a euphemism for being killed off).
"Changchang, Qianqian, are you going to eat here or go back to eat?" Han Yi asked with a smile, looking at the two who were still in a daze.
"Is it okay? But I'm not part of the senior's drama crew..." Liu Yifei asked innocently.
"I think I can smell the aroma of braised pork." Shu Chang sniffed.
"I'm the director, what I say goes." Han Yi stood up, took three boxed lunches from Li Xiang, and handed them to them. "As long as you don't mind the food, it's fine."
