Chapter 42 Reporter's Face-Off
Han Yi took out his phone and saw that it was Michelle Yeoh.
"Hey, Sister Ziqiong, you're in Beijing?" Han Yi answered the phone and greeted her warmly.
A hearty laugh came from the other end of the phone: "Han Yi, do you remember the movie 'The Touch' I mentioned to you?"
Han Yi's mind raced, and he instantly understood: "It can be released in mainland China?"
"Yes!" Michelle Yeoh's voice was filled with excitement. "The premiere is in Beijing! I'll send you the address. You absolutely have to come and support your sister tomorrow!"
"Okay, Sister Ziqiong."
Han Yi readily agreed, laughing, "You wait, I'll get you plenty of people over there, I guarantee it'll be a lively affair."
"Hahaha... Great! It's okay if we can't get a spot, I'll be happy as long as you can come." Michelle Yeoh laughed and hung up the phone.
Han Yi knew that "The Touch" was Michelle Yeoh's debut film after establishing her own production company. Having swept international awards with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," she had extensive connections in the industry and knew countless directors, actors, and stars.
Han Yi pondered that if he was going to find someone, he needed to find someone influential. As he thought this, he scrolled through his phone's contacts, swiping through the names one by one, and dialed them one by one:
"Hey, Mr. Han, are you free tomorrow? Your partner has a event going on, and they need you to come and oversee things..."
"Brother Wen, hey, Kerry Centre tomorrow, wanna come support me? What? A director? Sure, you keep your word, you'll come with me in France later..."
"Brother Wu, come over tomorrow. I'll text you the address..."
"Little Fatty, you have filming tomorrow? What filming is this anyway! Let me introduce you to 'Yu Shu Lien'..."
(Note: Yu Shu Lien is the character played by Michelle Yeoh in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".)
After making a few phone calls, Han Yi arrived home just in time. He and Chen Chen cuddled for a moment, then packed their clothes for the next day. As night deepened, they fell asleep in each other's arms.
The following morning, at the entrance of BJ Kerry Centre.
When Han Yi and Chen Chen arrived, they saw Michelle Yeoh and Leslie Cheung greeting guests at the front of the red carpet from afar.
The red carpet was packed with reporters with their cameras and microphones, and the flashbulbs were going off everywhere.
A sharp-eyed reporter recognized Han Yi and immediately rushed over with a microphone: "Director Han! Are you here specifically to support Michelle Yeoh's 'The Touch'?"
Han Yi said speechlessly, "Otherwise what? I came here to eat at the banquet, didn't I?"
The reporter was taken aback and was about to ask another question when Michelle Yeoh stepped forward with a smile, looking radiant in her gown: "Thank you so much, Director Han, for coming! It's such an honor!"
Her gaze then fell on Chen Chen, who was holding Han Yi's arm. "And this is?"
Han Yi stepped aside and gently brought Chen Chen in front of him, introducing her: "Sister Ziqiong, this is my wife, Chen Chen. Just call her Chenchen."
Upon hearing this, Chen Chen's eyes crinkled into crescent moons with a smile, and he gracefully grasped Michelle Yeoh's hand: "Sister Yeoh, I've always heard Han Yi talk about how you took care of him in Cannes. I'm so grateful to you."
Michelle Yeoh waved her hand and laughed, "We're all Chinese, it's only right to look after each other when we're traveling. Let's not talk about that."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries with Leslie Cheung, Michelle Yeoh led them into the venue.
Han Yi smiled and raised his hand to stop her: "Sister Ziqiong, wait a moment. I said I'd get you people, but they haven't all arrived yet."
After saying that, he and Chen Chen stood on one side of the foyer, waiting calmly.
A short while later, a car smoothly drove up and stopped at the starting point of the red carpet. The car door opened, and a middle-aged man and two middle-aged people got out.
It was Han Shanping, Jiang Wen, and Jiang Wu. All three were dressed in dark suits, their leather shoes were shiny, and they had an extraordinary air about them. All that was missing was a gold lining on their collars.
The reporters swarmed forward, secretly surprised: With these heavyweight figures gathered together, does Michelle Yeoh have that much influence?
Even Michelle Yeoh herself was quite surprised; she had tried inviting people from Beijing's elite circles, but most declined. She couldn't help but look at Han Yi and ask:
"Han Yi, did you invite all of these people?"
Han Yi smiled and nodded: "Come on, Sister Ziqiong, let me introduce you."
The group stepped forward to greet them. Han Yi introduced them, and Michelle Yeoh shook hands with each of the three, her gratitude and admiration evident in her words.
At this moment, Fan Xiaopang also arrived by car. She was lightly made up and looked radiant. She got out of the car and walked quickly over to join in the greetings.
The group posed for photos on the red carpet, with flashbulbs clicking incessantly.
After the group photo was taken, just as everyone was about to move into the venue, a young reporter suddenly squeezed in front of Han Yi from the side, his microphone almost stabbing into his stomach:
"Director Han, congratulations on your film 'Selaginella' being nominated for Venice! But how do you respond to the allegations that your film was not shot according to the script and that it involves illegal operations?"
The surroundings fell silent for a moment. Han Yi frowned slightly, wondering which paparazzi was so oblivious.
Han Shanping, Chen Chen, Michelle Yeoh, and others all turned their attention to this, their expressions varying.
Under the unspoken pressure from the crowd, the reporter stammered, "Director Han, please don't misunderstand... Someone anonymously submitted a report to our newspaper... I... I was just expressing public curiosity..."
Upon seeing this, Michelle Yeoh immediately gestured to the security guards to come forward and escort the reporter away.
Han Yi raised his hand to gently stop her. He turned his head and whispered in Yang Ziqiong's ear, "Sister Ziqiong, I'm sorry, I need to borrow your space to handle something."
Michelle Yeoh asked worriedly, "Will this affect you?"
Han Yi shook his head, his gaze calm. He turned and took the microphone directly from the reporter, striding to the center of the red carpet.
A large group of reporters and photographers immediately swarmed around him, all pointing their lenses at him.
Han Yi stood in the center, his gaze first finding the reporter who had asked the question in the crowd. He paused for two seconds, then scanned the entire room before slowly speaking:
"My dear journalist friend, first of all, you shouldn't have asked me personal questions at the press conference for 'The Legend of the Heavenly Vein.' I'm just here to support a friend. I understand your desire for sensational news, but the way you did it is rather underhanded."
His gaze swept over the reporters present, he paused for a moment, and spoke in a calm yet firm tone:
"Secondly, I know there have been a lot of rumors about me recently, saying things like my movie didn't pass censorship, it wasn't filmed according to the script, and even comparing me to those directors. To these, I just want to say—"
Han Yi abruptly changed the subject, his gaze fixed intently on the reporter who had initially asked the question:
"I know who reported me behind the scenes, but I don't care. I want to state that this film is based on a true story, and I have embellished it in the script; I will never deliberately portray it as dark!"
"Director Han! Could you please tell me which specific real event this is?" another reporter hurriedly asked.
"If you don't just follow the entertainment section, you should be able to find clues in the local news about people's livelihoods these past two days. Please check it out yourself," Han Yi replied.
"Director Han! How can you be sure the film has been beautified?"
"Nonsense! I've already finished filming the movie, and it was even nominated for Venice. Why are you asking such a stupid question?"
Seeing that the atmosphere was a bit tense, Michelle Yeoh immediately signaled to security to maintain order, clear the area, and guide everyone into the venue.
Finally, the premiere of "The Legend of the Sacred Stones" went smoothly.
After the event, Michelle Yeoh hosted a banquet to thank everyone. The guests and hosts enjoyed themselves immensely until nightfall.
Before parting, Michelle Yeoh hugged Han Yi, shook him vigorously, and said gratefully:
"Han Yi, thank you so much today. I'll remember this kindness. You must come to Malaysia again sometime, and I'll treat you to a good time!"
"Definitely, Sister Ziqiong," Han Yi replied with a smile.
