Huayu02 started by making films.
Chapter 7 in progress
Adhering to the principle of limited film stock and saving wherever possible, and considering that the photographers, lighting technicians, and makeup artists were all newcomers, Han Yi led them through the entire process twice.
At ten o'clock, Han Yi picked up a makeshift director's tube made from a rolled-up script and used it as a megaphone to shout:
"Lights OK, props OK, actors in position, 'I'm glad you're dead now,' one scene, one shot—Action!"
The camera slowly pans. Wu Bai (played by Jiang Wu) drags a "corpse" (played by Da Gao) wrapped in a sack out of the room. He goes into the tool shed, turns on the light, rummages through the drawers and cabinets, and takes out a saw, nails, a claw hammer, and wooden boards.
The sound of sawing wood came from the room, and the camera only showed Wu Bai's upper body bent over sawing wood.
Han Yi gently patted Du Zhe, signaling him to turn the camera towards the bedroom door opposite.
Wu Tian (played by Jiang Wen) pushed open the bedroom door, and a squeaking sound came from the crack in the door. He leaned half his body out, and the two began to talk.
"Wu Tian, what are you doing out here?!" Wu Bai looked up.
Wu Tian looked around and murmured, "Wu Bai, where's Dad?"
"You go in first, I'll be right there."
"You go in first, I'll be right there." Wu Bai repeated himself, his tone even more forceful.
"Where is Dad?"
"Go in! Go in now! He's inside!" Wu Bai roared.
Wu Tian seemed frightened by his brother's appearance, slowly shrank back, and closed the door.
Du Zhe steadily turned the camera back to Wu Bai. Han Yi whispered, "Push in, get a close-up, I need to see the veins on his face."
……
"Great! Senior, that was spot on. Let's do another take. Lao Du, switch the camera to the other side, one two-shot—Action!"
Time slipped by unnoticed. This scene was filmed twice, using up two rolls of film. Han Yi estimated that there should be enough film for post-production developing and editing, so he raised the makeshift director's cannon and shouted:
"That take is good! Now let's assign tasks for tomorrow. Lao Du, Da Gao, and Xiao Zhao, you're in charge of bringing the equipment and heading to Tianjin Port on time tomorrow morning. Chenchen will come with me this afternoon; I'll scout locations, and she'll be responsible for finding a hotel nearby. The scene at the dock will probably take about two days to film."
He turned to Jiang Wen and Jiang Wu: "My two senior brothers, are you coming with us today, or will you be traveling in the van with Lao Du and the others tomorrow?"
Jiang Wu rubbed his bald head and said with a smile, "You'll have to pay for another night's room if you go over today, it's not necessary. Tomorrow, the two of us will go with Photographer Du."
Jiang Wen nodded and said, "I have to go home to be with my daughter tonight. We can go together tomorrow, it won't interfere with anything."
"Then I'll have to trouble you, senior brother, to endure the bumpy ride with them all the way," Han Yi replied.
"This is nothing, it's all for the sake of the play," Jiang Wu quickly waved his hand.
Jiang Wen laughed, gave Han Yi a thumbs up, and said with admiration in his eyes, "Xiao Yi, you're really good. Much better than that Lu Taro. Although this is just a short film, the crew is very well-organized. You really show your skill in a small space."
Han Yi feigned shyness: "Senior brother, please don't flatter me. I have a lot to learn from you. You are the real great director."
"I'm just a banned director, what kind of big director am I?"
"Senior brother, you are mistaken. Which well-known director in China has not been banned?"
After a round of laughter and conversation, all the indoor scenes for "I'm Glad You're Dead Now" were filmed. Jiang Wen and Jiang Wu went home first and arranged to meet Du Zhe the next day to pick them up and head to Tianjin Port together.
Han Yi and the remaining team cleaned and organized the indoor props, finishing around 1 p.m. Xiao Zhao drove, while Du Zhe and Da Gao took the equipment back to school first. Before getting into the car, Han Yi pulled Du Zhe aside and gave him some instructions:
"Old Du, leave the equipment at the department office when you get back, and pick it up when you leave tomorrow. I'm entrusting the film to you, so make sure you take good care of it."
Du Zhe patted his chest and assured him, "Director Han, you can rest assured. The glue will stay with us, and even if we're not there, the glue will still be there!"
"it is good."
After watching the car drive out of the residential area, Han Yi turned and went back inside. He stuffed two changes of underwear into his bag and looked at Chen Chen, who was helping him tidy up in the living room:
"Thanks, Chenchen. But I'll need your help to go to Tianjin Port with me first. You can find a guesthouse nearby, and I'll look for a venue and a boat."
Chen Chen put down the rag, ran to the bathroom to wash her hands, and then came back: "No problem! But Director Han... can I make a small request?" Her big eyes behind her glasses darted around, and she said cleverly:
"Can I bring my roommate along? She's never been on a film set before."
"Sure, you have a room to yourself anyway, so she can squeeze in with you." Han Yi agreed, thinking to himself: Another free laborer has arrived.
"Yay!" Chen Chen jumped up excitedly, as if to pounce on him. Han Yi raised his hand and pressed it against her forehead: "Stop fooling around. Tell your roommate to meet us at the train station."
"Okay, okay!"
Chen Chen took out his phone from his backpack and made a call. The two went out together and hailed a taxi at the entrance of the residential area.
"Driver, Xizhimen Railway Station."
About fifteen minutes later, Han Yi and Chen Chen got off the train at the station. As soon as they stood still, Chen Chen ran towards a girl at the station entrance: "Ake! How come you're faster than us?"
"I was shopping around here when you called, so I just walked over."
Han Yi quickly caught up, and only when he got closer did he realize that the girl's face was Zhao Ke. She later played Xiao Qiao in "New Three Kingdoms" and the mother-in-law in "My Heroic Husband". However, now, she and Han Yi are both students in the 01 class of Beijing Film Academy, majoring in acting.
The three greeted each other. Han Yi bought three train tickets, and the train headed towards Tanggu Station.
Inside the carriage, Zhao Ke took out washed fruit and distributed it to everyone. Han Yi took an apple, took a bite, and found it crisp, sweet, and juicy. He asked curiously:
"Zhao Ke, why did you suddenly want to come to my film crew with Chenchen? Didn't the acting department recommend any film crews to you?"
Zhao Ke sighed softly, "Director Han, you can just call me Ake. I went to the set of 'Warning Line' before, and I only played a minor role, just a few scenes. Chenchen said you were filming a movie, so I thought I'd come and check it out."
Han Yi nodded. He remembered that the drama starred Li Yunlong and Wen Li, and it was a pretty daring TV series.
Chen Chen, chewing on an apple, mumbled as she interjected, "It's a pity there aren't any female roles in Director Han's short film, otherwise I would have let you play them. Right, Director Han?" She looked at Han Yi, her eyes filled with anticipation.
"I'll invite you after I become famous," Han Yi said with a smile. "Otherwise, why would Ake even look at my blank slate crew?"
Zhao Ke quickly said, "How could that be, Director Han! I'm already very satisfied to have a role to play. Everyone in the acting department at the Taipei Film Academy knows that the people in the directing department next door are unreliable. Everyone is hoping that the literature department will produce a great director!"
"Haha, has our directing department really gotten such a bad reputation?"
As the three chatted and laughed, the train slowly pulled into Tanggu Station. Each of them shouldered their bags and disembarked. Han Yi hailed a taxi and headed straight for Tianjin Port.
As soon as I got off the vehicle, the sound of cargo ship horns mingled with the sea breeze and hit me. Before me were mountains of red and green containers, and towering gantry cranes and towing trucks outlined the bustling silhouette of the port.
Han Yi began assigning tasks: "Chenchen, you and Ake find a hotel nearby and rent four suites. Wenwu and I will share one, Lao Du and I will share one, Da Gao and Xiao Zhao will share one, and you two can stay in the last one."
As he spoke, he took out the cash he had withdrawn from the bank earlier, counted out three thousand, and handed it over: "Don't let the environment be too bad. Rent it for two days first. Then find a restaurant and provide boxed meals for two days. Contact me by phone if anything happens."
After explaining, he looked at Zhao Ke and said, "Ke, have you asked the teacher for leave? We might not be able to go back until Monday."
"I told the teacher before I came."
