Chapter 14 A Short Story on a Rainy Night
July 11, 7:30 PM.
The night in Beilu City was still sultry. At this moment, there was thunder and lightning outside the window, and a torrential downpour was falling. The raindrops pounded against the glass window, making a crackling sound.
The TV in the living room was playing "Magic Phone," and Lin Feng, sitting on the sofa, was holding his phone, texting someone.
He glanced at Lin Ran on the other side of the sofa every now and then, who was muttering to himself. He noticed that Lin Ran kept checking his watch and seemed a little nervous and anxious.
Wang Meiling, who was busy in the kitchen, called out to the two brothers watching TV in the living room, "Lin Er, we're out of soy sauce! Hurry up and go to the convenience store to buy a bottle; we need it!"
"Huh?" Lin Ran suddenly came to his senses. After hearing Ms. Wang's instructions, he replied inexplicably, "Shall we go now?"
"Of course! If we don't go now, we won't have anything to eat!"
Sitting to the side, Lin Feng glanced at his younger brother again and noticed that the boy was acting strangely today.
Normally, Lin Ran would definitely quip, "Let Lin Da go buy it!" or "Mom, why don't you ask your Lin Da to do it?"
For some reason, this kid agreed to it in a daze today.
However, Lin Feng ignored him, as he was enjoying his leisure time and continued looking at his phone.
Lin Ran put on a light jacket, picked up the umbrella next to the door, and quietly grabbed a baseball bat that he had prepared two days ago. He then opened the door and went out.
Twenty minutes have passed.
Wang Meiling came out of the kitchen and asked Lin Feng curiously, "Where's Lin Er? He just bought some soy sauce, why hasn't he come back yet?"
Lin Feng glanced at his watch, somewhat puzzled. "I'll give him a call."
The phone rang for a long time but no one answered. Lin Feng, remembering Lin Ran's strange behavior earlier that day, said to Wang Meiling, "I'll go down and check."
I had just put on my slippers when there was another knock on the door.
"I'm back now." Lin Feng kicked off his slippers and lay down on the sofa. "Didn't I bring the key? Open the door yourself!" he shouted towards the door.
The knocking continued. Wang Meiling rolled her eyes at her eldest son and went to open the door herself.
Standing at the door was Aunt Ma, the neighbor who lived downstairs. Her hair was a little wet from the rain, she was panting, and her face was full of anxiety.
Wang Meiling quickly invited him in: "Xiao Ma, what's wrong? What happened? Come in and have a glass of water."
"Sister Wang, something terrible has happened! You...you have to go down and check! Your second son...your second son has been taken away by ambulance!"
"What?!" Wang Meiling's face turned deathly pale instantly. She gripped the doorframe tightly. "What happened to my second son? Xiao Ma, explain yourself!"
"Oh dear! I don't know the specifics either! I just came back from outside and saw a group of people and police cars surrounding the area! Then I saw your second son being carried into an ambulance!"
"You guys go check it out quickly... find out which hospital it is!"
Wang Meiling felt a sudden boom in her head, her legs went weak, and she almost lost her balance.
Lin Feng had somehow appeared behind her and caught his swaying mother. After hearing that Lin Ran had been taken away by the ambulance, his face turned ashen.
"Mom, don't panic! Let's go to the hospital first!"
He quickly grabbed his car keys and wallet from the shoe cabinet, and while pulling Wang Meiling along, he said rapidly to Aunt Ma, "Aunt Ma, could you please lock the door for us?"
The elevator was descending, and the only sound inside was Wang Meiling's intermittent sobs.
Lin Feng pursed his lips, his brain racing, analyzing which hospital Lin Ran was most likely to be sent to.
The elevator doors opened, and the two practically dashed into their BMW. Lin Feng started the car at top speed, and it shot out of the underground garage like an arrow, plunging into the rain.
Inside the car, Wang Meiling clasped her hands together in prayer, while Lin Feng remained silent, pressing the accelerator harder.
Emergency building of the Second People's Hospital of Beilu City.
Lin Feng quickly scanned the layout of the hospital's first floor and finally spotted a doctor in a white coat who had just come out of the emergency room.
He stepped forward to stop the other person, trying his best to control himself and speak in the calmest and clearest tone possible:
"Doctor, about half an hour ago, was a boy brought in? He was about 1.8 meters tall, around 18 or 19 years old, about the same height as me."
The doctor stopped and adjusted his glasses. Although Lin Feng tried his best to remain calm, the doctor could still see the anxiety in Lin Feng's eyes.
"Are you his family members?" the doctor asked Lin Feng and Wang Meiling.
"Yes, I'm his brother, and this is my mother." Lin Feng spoke quickly, but every word was clear and forceful.
"Oh, don't worry too much. The person was brought in in time, and the wound has already been treated." The doctor's tone was relatively calm.
"He just had surgery and is under observation. He'll be out soon."
Upon hearing the word "surgery," Wang Meiling swayed again, and Lin Feng quickly supported her, his heart sinking.
"Doctor, could you please tell me what kind of surgery it was and how badly the injury is?"
"There's a stab wound on the outside of your left thigh. It's not too deep, but there's been a lot of bleeding. We've already cleaned and sutured it," the doctor explained professionally and calmly.
"At the same time, he suffered a head injury, resulting in a mild concussion, but it's not serious and there's no danger."
Hearing this, Lin Feng and Wang Meiling finally felt a little more at ease. Wang Meiling's legs went weak, and she only managed to stay upright thanks to Lin Feng's support. She covered her mouth, tears of relief and lingering fear streaming down her face.
Lin Feng secretly breathed a sigh of relief: "Doctor, thank you. How was he injured? Is he conscious? Are there any aftereffects of the concussion? What should we pay attention to in his subsequent recovery and treatment?"
His questions were clear and logical. The doctor glanced at him with some surprise, about to answer them one by one.
"Excuse me... are you family members of Lin Ran?"
A timid voice came from behind, and Lin Feng and Wang Meiling turned their heads to look at the same time.
Behind her stood several police officers in uniform, and in the middle of them was a girl who looked to be about the same age as Lin Ran.
The leader was a police officer in his forties with a calm face. His gaze swept between Lin Feng and Wang Meiling, and finally landed on Lin Feng, who was obviously the backbone of the group.
"Hello, I'm from the local police station. This female student is... one of the people involved at the scene, and also a victim."
Upon hearing this, Lin Feng's eyes flickered, and he carefully examined the girl in front of him.
She was soaked to the bone, clearly having been in the rain for a long time. Her long hair clung messily to her pale cheeks and neck, with water still dripping from the ends.
Due to her hair obscuring her face and the poor angle of the lighting, it was difficult to see her full features at first glance. However, one could vaguely make out the smooth and beautiful lines of her jawline.
She was wearing a police uniform jacket that almost completely enveloped her, making her already slender figure appear even thinner, like a leaf in autumn.
"There are some things we need to understand from Lin Ran, and we'd also like to communicate with you first. How is the injured person now? Is it convenient for you to talk?" the lead police officer continued.
Lin Feng gave the doctor an apologetic look, and the doctor nodded in understanding and stepped aside for the time being.
Then, Lin Feng stepped forward, standing in front of Wang Meiling, who was becoming agitated again. Facing the police, he spoke with restraint:
"Officer, this is Lin Feng, Lin Ran's older brother, and this is my mother, Wang Meiling. My brother just had surgery and is probably not able to speak right now. Could you please tell me what happened to him?"
"We are still investigating the specific circumstances. What we know so far is that a vicious assault occurred on Xinhua Road back street near your community..."
Just then, the emergency room door opened, and a nurse poked her head out: "Are Lin Ran's family members here? The patient is awake and can be transferred to a ward. One family member can accompany him."
"I'll go!" Wang Meiling exclaimed immediately.
Lin Feng nodded to Wang Meiling: "Mom, go in and check on Lin Er. Tell him he's alright and to get some rest. I'll stay here and cooperate with the police."
