Chapter 19 Fake Watermelon
Morning light filtered through the gaps in the curtains, falling onto the floor of the room.
Jiang Lin gently pulled his numb arm out.
Jiang Ye's eyelashes trembled, and she groggily opened her eyes, her gaze falling blankly on Jiang Lin's face before suddenly fixing.
"Good morning," Jiang Lin said with a smile.
Jiang Ye:......
"morning!"
She responded with a sound of agreement, her face flushed. How could she have been so bold last night?
Shrink, shrink, shrink.
After pretending to be an ostrich in bed for a while, Jiang Ye finally got up, but the blush on her face didn't fade by breakfast time.
"You can look for the warehouse towards the north gate."
"That area is next to the urban-rural fringe, so there aren't many people there usually."
Jiang Lin nodded and agreed. The two then rented an electric scooter and rode around the perimeter of the Communication University of China to the North Gate.
Passing through the North Gate, I rode along the street for 1 kilometer. There were indeed very few people. On both sides were two- or three-story self-built buildings with signs for "Shops for Rent" on their tightly closed roller shutter doors.
Occasionally, one or two food carts are parked in front of the store, which look like they are set up stalls in the night market of the commercial street.
The two rode their bikes slowly forward, looking at the signs posted on both sides. A handwritten sign for vacant rooms on the first floor came into view.
Jiang Lin dialed the number listed. Judging from the voice, it was a woman in her forties or fifties. "Do you want to view the apartment?"
She had a very loud voice, and as soon as she finished speaking, the window upstairs opened.
"Here, here!"
The woman was very welcoming and came out from behind the house with the keys in her hand.
She glanced at the two of them and said, "You must be students at the school. This is an empty room; there's no furniture at all, so it's not suitable for living in."
She thought the two were the kind of young couple who rented a place outside the school.
Jiang Ye smiled and said, "We just need to find an empty room to store some things and use it as a temporary warehouse."
The woman said "Oh," and her face immediately lit up with a smile: "That's perfect! Come and take a look, it's right here."
As she spoke, she turned around and took the key to open the roller shutter door behind her.
With a whoosh, a small room of about 30 square meters appeared before the two of them.
"Don't worry, it's very clean. A fried rice vendor once asked me to rent it, but I refused."
"I'm afraid it will fill the whole house with cooking fumes."
"The toilet is just outside the inner door. There are separate meters for water and electricity, so you can pay them yourself. It's very convenient."
Jiang Lin and Jiang Ye exchanged glances. It was clean enough that it hadn't been rented out to fried rice vendors. However, this was debatable, as there was a thick layer of dust on the ground, indicating that it had been closed for quite some time.
However, the location meets their needs for temporary transit, and parking is convenient at the entrance. They can put several thousand kilograms of watermelons and a processing table inside the house.
The woman looked at the two of them. "How about it? Satisfied? It's only 400 a month. How long do you plan to rent it?"
Jiang Lin said, "Let's rent it for two months first."
"Ah, short-term rental?" The woman frowned. "For short-term rental, it'll be a bit more expensive, 450 a month, one month's rent as deposit."
It's a suburban area after all, so the price of 450 isn't high.
Adhering to the principle of saving where possible and spending where necessary, Jiang Lin smiled and said, "Why is the price going up? Auntie, your house has been empty for at least two months, hasn't it?"
"After being out of work for half a month, I lost everything."
"There are plenty of empty houses on this street. Yours is the first one we saw, so we called to inquire. It's 400 yuan a month, one month's rent as deposit and one month's rent in advance. Show us your land use certificate. If there are no problems, we can sign a simple rental contract. What do you think?"
The older woman chuckled and exclaimed, "Wow, these young people nowadays are really shrewd!"
"Okay, okay, 400 it is. I'll go upstairs to get the contract and materials."
"You brought your ID card, right? I need to see it too."
Jiang Lin nodded: "No problem. Also, we'll change this lock."
"Sure, sure!" the auntie said happily, since it wasn't her who was paying.
After taking down the completed contract and ownership certificate, Jiang Lin showed his ID card to the other party and then signed it.
Jiang Lin changed the locks, bought daily necessities, and then personally cleaned the house. He even disinfected the house with disinfectant.
"So, who do you think should manage this warehouse?" Jiang Lin asked.
Without a second thought, Jiang Ye said, "Chen Feng? I think he's a good fit."
"Oh?" Jiang Lin was actually the same person, but he wanted to hear Jiang Ye's reasons.
"These classmates are all nice, but we haven't had much contact with them. As for Chen Feng..."
She paused for a moment, then said, "Quite honest."
Jiang Lin smiled. In his opinion, Chen Feng was a typical example of someone with too much of a sense of responsibility. For Chen Feng personally, such a personality might not be a good thing in the real workplace.
But for him, that's an advantage.
"Not bad, not bad, he already has the potential to be a capitalist."
"Get lost! You're the capitalist! We're supposed to pay you, okay?"
Jiang Lin nodded solemnly, "My wife is right!"
……
The sun was high in the sky, and the air gradually became scorching hot.
Groups of students began to go out to find food.
"I heard there's a 'Watermelon Guy' on Tieba these past couple of days, selling incredibly delicious watermelons. Has anyone tried them?"
"Hey, don't even mention it, it's so popular. I joined the group yesterday afternoon, but it kept saying the group was full. This Watermelon Bro is the same, if the group is full, just open a second group."
"Is it that popular?"
"Hey, you wouldn't believe it, but every single one of Watermelon Bro's is a data-driven watermelon!"
"Do you know what a 'data-driven watermelon' is? It clearly labels the sugar content and taste. I heard he brought over 500 watermelons yesterday, and they were all snatched up by our school's students!"
"It's a pity I found out too late, otherwise I would have bought one to try."
As the group was reminiscing, they saw a tricycle parked at the intersection ahead, loaded with a whole cart of watermelons.
At first glance, each watermelon had a bright white label stuck on it.
Several students' eyes lit up suddenly, and they leaned closer to take a look: sugar content: 14%, texture: crisp, and the picking date.
"This is exactly the same picture as the one on Tieba!"
"Hey kid, wanna buy a watermelon? It's a 'data watermelon,' guaranteed sweet!"
The stall owner was a smiling middle-aged man who greeted us proactively.
"Is this also one of Watermelon Bro's watermelons?"
The stall owner's smile widened: "Yes, yes, we're all from the same place. The melons are great! Look at the labels, they're all exactly the same. Buy with confidence!"
"Wow, looks like we're in luck!" The boys exchanged pleasantries.
"Want to try one?"
Upon hearing this sound, the shopkeeper immediately brought out a watermelon, "Seven and a half pounds."
"So, how many of you are there? Can you finish this?"
"I'll cut it for you!"
Before the boys could answer, the boss took a knife and cut the watermelon in half on the spot. It looked alright.
"Boss, may I...can I try some?"
One of the students asked.
The stall owner paused, his smile unchanged, and swiftly sliced a thin piece in the middle: "Here, try as much as you like!"
The boy took the almost transparent melon pulp, put it in his mouth, chewed it, and frowned slightly.
It had a mild flavor, completely different from the extremely sweet taste my roommate described.
Before he could even speak, the stall owner had already deftly packed the cut watermelon into a plastic bag, and said with a smile, "Sweet, right? It weighs seven and a half pounds in total, three yuan per pound, twenty-two yuan and fifty cents, just give me twenty-two."
The boy opened his mouth, but seeing the stall owner's enthusiastic and unyielding smile, he swallowed back the not-so-sweet words that were on the tip of his tongue.
"It's...not bad..."
He awkwardly chuckled, pulled out twenty-two yuan, and handed it to the shopkeeper.
The owner, still smiling, said, "Alright, all taken care of. Come again next time..."
