The next day.

Wenxi went to work at Yelan Bar as usual. As soon as she turned into the staff break room, she bumped into Zhao Jingan standing there.

"Little cake... uh, no... Wenxi, my place is too small to accommodate someone as big as you."

Wenxi paused, her delicate brows furrowing slightly: "President Zhao, what do you mean by that?"

Zhao Jingqian took out his wages for the past few days and handed them to her: "I'm sorry, I can't let you continue working here, otherwise Zhou Jingchen will kill me."

He had never seen Zhou Jingchen's out-of-control, murderous gaze last night before; it was terrifying.

Last night, he angrily dialed Zhou Jingchen's number, questioning him about why he took away his "little cake" without saying a word.

The man on the other end of the phone spoke with an eerily calm voice: "Zhao Jingan, it doesn't matter who you hang out with, but... don't touch her."

At that moment, Zhao Jingqian finally realized that the aloof girl selling alcohol in the bar was Zhou Jingchen's childhood sweetheart whom he had cherished for so many years.

He couldn't figure out the entanglement between the two, and dared not get involved, so he could only apologize and dismiss Wenxi.

Wenxi looked at him intently: "What exactly did Zhou Jingchen say to you?"

Zhao Jingan hurriedly waved his hand: "It's nothing, it's just that I didn't dare to keep you here. Last night, Jingchen beat up his clients for your sake. I've known him for so many years and this is the first time I've seen him like this. If you stay any longer, who knows, next time he might just be smashing a bottle over someone's head."

Wenxi remained silent for a few seconds, then simply uttered a single word: "Okay."

As soon as she finished speaking, she turned and left.

This high-paying part-time job is gone; Zhou Jingchen completely ruined it.

Wenxi clenched her fists, filled with deep regret. Why hadn't she bitten that bastard to death last night?

After leaving the bar, she went straight home, her figure moving from one corner to another as she began packing her suitcase.

Wenxi's eyes blazed with fury as her gaze swept over the two men's coats hanging on the balcony railing. She rushed over, ripped them off, and threw them hard on the ground. She then stomped on them, again and again, as if trying to crush all her resentment inside.

As dawn broke, Wenxi stood at the bus stop, dragging her heavy suitcase.

The car slowly pulled up, she got in, found a seat by the window, and took out her phone.

At that moment, Zhou Jingchen was sitting on the leather sofa in his study, checking an email sent by Lin Xujie on his computer. The contents were unremarkable, and the investigation would obviously take some time.

The sudden ringing of a cell phone shattered the silence of the room.

He glanced at the caller ID, and the two words flashing on the screen instantly warmed his eyes: Baby.

Without hesitation, he answered immediately, his magnetic voice carrying a hint of languid warmth, as if he had just woken up: "Feed?"

"Zhou Jingchen! Go to hell!"

A furious roar exploded through the receiver.

The entire bus fell silent instantly. All the passengers turned their gazes toward Wenxi, filled with curiosity and inquiry.

The man on the other end of the phone suddenly raised an eyebrow, puzzled.

Wenxi blushed under the stares, biting her lip in embarrassment. She pressed the phone closer to the microphone, deliberately lowering her voice, but each word seemed to be squeezed out from between her teeth:

"I've been living a peaceful life, why did you have to show up? Why did you have to bother me? You ruined my job, I've been fired by Zhao Jingan now, are you happy now?"

"If you don't leave, I will! I never want to see you again in my life!!"

After saying that, she pressed the hang-up button hard, her fingers trembling as she pulled out the SIM card and threw it out of the car window.

The small card traced an arc in the air and disappeared into the traffic in an instant.

The world has finally fallen completely silent.

As Zhou Jingchen listened to the busy tone coming from the receiver, his temples throbbed.

He immediately called back, but all he heard was a cold, mechanical female voice: "Hello, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable..."

My heart sank suddenly.

He suddenly stood up, grabbed his coat from the back of the chair, and rushed out, dialing the number repeatedly as he hurried downstairs.

The black Land Rover sped out of the garage like a bolt of lightning, its engine emitting a deep roar as it raced down the road.

He completely ignored the angry honking of the vehicles behind him, repeatedly stepping on the gas to overtake, turning the steering wheel quickly and ruthlessly in his hands.

The car sped to a stop in front of Building 3 of Wanxingyuan, and Zhou Jingchen pushed open the car door and rushed upstairs.

He ran all the way to the top floor, clenched his long fingers into a fist, and slammed them heavily on the door of the apartment he rented in Wenxi.

They called her name again and again, the echoes reverberating through the empty hallway, but no one answered from inside the room for a long time.

Just as he was anxiously preparing to raise his hand again, the security door across the hall opened.

An elderly woman with silver hair, carrying a shopping basket, peeked out and kindly reminded them, "Nobody's here anymore. That girl left early this morning with her suitcase; she looks like she's going on a long trip."

The old lady's words were like a thunderclap, exploding in Zhou Jingchen's ears.

His blood seemed to freeze at that moment, his ears were ringing, and all the color drained from his face.

He stood there, stunned, unsure how to react. A feeling of suffocation washed over him like a tidal wave, making it difficult for him to even breathe.

He clearly didn't ask Zhao Jingan to fire her; he just asked him to keep an eye on her and make sure she didn't sell alcohol anymore...

Unexpectedly, Zhao Jinqian dismissed the person directly.

No wonder, no wonder she was so furious...

He angered her.

Zhou Jingchen staggered back a step, his back slamming heavily against the cold wall. He slowly squatted down, his hands supporting his forehead, feeling as if all his strength had been drained away, like a deflated balloon.

She ran away again.

Like a gust of wind that cannot be grasped, she comes and goes without a trace, leaving him unable to even catch her tail.

Gentle approaches won't work on her, so he should be tougher and lock her up! Make sure she can't go anywhere!

The man's cold and stern face gradually turned pale and sickly, and he exuded a sinister and indifferent aura. His dark eyes grew deeper and deeper, and finally, the soft light faded away and disappeared completely.

"Wenxi..." He clenched his fingers.

-

Wenxi doesn't have many friends in this city, and Jiang Qi is one of the few.

The two met while working part-time. Jiang Qi was about the same age as her and came from a remote small town.

Her family favored boys over girls, believing that it was a waste of money to send a girl to school. She was forced to drop out of school in her teens and went out to work with her luggage.

Over the years, her parents back home would call constantly, trying every trick in the book to ask her for money to support her younger brother. Jiang Qi was fed up with it all, so she simply blocked all contact methods and gritted her teeth and worked hard on her own. She managed to save up some money and bought a small two-bedroom apartment in a cheap resettlement community near Shenzhen.

When Wenxi stood in front of Jiang Qi's house with her suitcase, the security door wasn't closed properly, and she stumbled upon a scene of intense intimacy inside. Jiang Qi and a boy were pressed together, their lips glistening with moisture.

The boy was a young, artsy guy who busked playing guitar in the underground streets. In Jiang Qi's words, "He was penniless, had nothing but a young body."

Wenxi stopped in her tracks, feeling a little embarrassed. Just as she was thinking about going downstairs to the convenience store to hide, the door was suddenly pulled open with a "bang".

Jiang Qi winked at her and called out, "What are you standing there for? Come on in!"

As she spoke, she turned to the boy and waved her hand without any mercy: "You go back first, my friend is here."

The boy smiled helplessly, nodded to Wenxi, and then turned to leave.

Wenxi was pulled into the house by Jiang Qi, and rubbed her hands a little embarrassedly: "I'll just stay for a few days. Once I find a job with room and board, I'll move out immediately."

Jiang Qi rolled her eyes at her, pouring her water while muttering:

"Why are you saying that? Are you being too polite? I told you before that I would let you move in with me and I would not charge you a penny of rent, but you wouldn't listen and insisted on renting your own place. Why are you being so polite with me?"

Wenxi chuckled awkwardly, "I was just worried about interfering with your date, weren't I?"

That evening, Jiang Qi put on an apron and went into the kitchen. She busied herself for most of the day, preparing several delicious home-style dishes.

The two sat cross-legged by the coffee table, opened a few cans of beer, and chatted about their recent lives while eating peanuts.

Wenxi didn't mention Zhou Jingchen, only casually saying that she hadn't been doing well lately, that she had been fired by her boss, and that she had run into some trouble and couldn't go home.

Jiang Qi frowned as he listened, put down his beer can, reached out and patted her shoulder, his tone firm:

"It's okay, even if the sky falls, your sisters will support you. Just relax and stay here. Don't worry about the job, I'll help you find one."

And so, Wenxi settled down temporarily in Jiang Qi's small home.

Jiang Qi works as a customer service representative in a nearby high-end shopping mall. Wen Xi, who is always bored, occasionally goes to her workplace to see if there are any suitable job opportunities.

The sun was shining brightly that day. After having breakfast, Wenxi strolled leisurely towards the mall. Just as she passed through the revolving door, she bumped into someone.

Her mind went blank for a moment, and the other person looked at her in shock.

That's... Zhou Jingchen's grandmother?!

Beside the old lady was a young girl with a graceful face, wearing a well-fitting woolen dress, with gentle eyes and a refined and noble air.

The old lady clearly recognized her as well, and her face immediately darkened.

The disgust and contempt in his voice were almost palpable: "What are you doing here?"

Wenxi snapped out of her daze, looked at her harsh face, and suddenly found it somewhat amusing. She curled her lips into a smile and asked in return:

"Do you own this shopping mall? Why can't I be here?"

The old lady was taken aback by her retort and glared at her with anger. Wenxi glared back without backing down, her stubbornness undiminished.

After a moment of stalemate, the old lady glanced at the girl beside her, her tone softening slightly, and patted her hand:

"Qiao Yue, go ahead and wait for me. Grandma will be here in a few minutes."

Qiao Yue nodded gently, smiled at the old lady, and then nodded politely to Wen Xi before turning around and sitting down on the sofa in the hall, her posture serene.

The old lady gave Wenxi a cold look and tilted her head to the side: "You, come with me."

The two walked to the giant glass screen of the mall, where tall green plants concealed their figures, isolating them from the surrounding noise.

She carried a stylish designer handbag, her silver hair was meticulously combed, and she glanced sideways at Wenxi, her chin held high, her posture arrogant.

"Why did you come to Linshen?"

Wenxi frowned, her tone distant: "This has nothing to do with you."

"Are you here to see my grandson?" The old lady's eyes were scrutinizing.

Wenxi scoffed, "You're overthinking it. Do you really think your grandson is a hundred-yuan bill, loved by everyone?"

The old woman gave her a disdainful look and said, "Don't forget what I told you a few years ago."

Wenxi suddenly clenched her fingers, her knuckles turning pale from the force.

She took a deep breath, a flicker of pain crossing her eyes, then sneered, and said, word by word:

"Unforgettable."
