Wenxi got off the bus.

She walked into the residential area with her head down, her steps heavy as if filled with lead, her mind preoccupied. She was pondering where to begin confessing to Zhou Jingchen when he returned that evening, and how to do so.

Just as I reached the building entrance, a rough voice suddenly rang in my ears:

"Damn, we finally caught this girl who owes us money!"

Wenxi looked up abruptly and saw three burly men standing a few meters away. The man who was speaking had a crumpled leather bag tucked under his arm, a half-smoked cigarette dangling from his mouth, and a scar on his brow that looked like a grotesque centipede.

Her pupils contracted suddenly, and she instinctively turned and ran, but the other person caught up with her in a flash, his rough hand gripping the back of her collar like an iron clamp.

"I've been looking for you for almost a year, you're quite the hider!"

"Let go!" Wenxi's voice trembled as she forced her back straight. "Let me go, I won't run away!"

The man suddenly tightened his grip, grabbing the back of her neck and violently throwing her to the ground. Wenxi staggered and fell to the ground.

The other person pointed a cigarette butt at her eyes and threatened, "Won't run away? You said the same thing last time, every deadbeat debtor says the same thing! I don't believe you for a second!"

Wenxi shrank back in fear, her throat tightening: "I came to Shenzhen to earn money to pay you back!"

"Where's the money? Where's the money!" The other person stepped forward and grabbed her collar, his eyes fierce and violent.

Wenxi grabbed his wrist, her voice trembling with pleading sobs:

"Brother Jiang, I haven't earned any money yet... My mother is very ill, and I'm struggling to support myself... Please give me a little more time..."

This guy called Brother Jiang is in charge of collecting the Wen family's debts. He's been with them for so many years, and he knows the Wen family's situation best.

Passersby occasionally glanced curiously in our direction as they walked by.

The man crouched down, grabbed her collar, and leaned close: "You, with such a pretty face, why don't you go sell yourself? Wouldn't being a prostitute earn you more money than doing odd jobs?"

The girl turned her head away in shame, biting her lower lip tightly.

The next second, the handbag was roughly snatched away, the zipper being ripped open with a loud rattling sound.

Several hundred yuan in loose change and a few coins were pulled out, which the other person casually stuffed into their pocket. They then took out their phone, waved it in front of her, and scoffed, "You're using the latest model now, and you're still complaining about being poor and unable to pay your debts?"

"Give me back my phone!"

"I didn't buy that myself!"

Wenxi lunged forward to grab it, but he raised his hand to block it.

The man's gaze was sinister, tinged with mockery: "I know who bought it for you."

Wenxi stiffened, her movements halted, and she looked at him in horror, her eyes filled with panic.

The other person stepped forward, each word carrying an intense sense of pressure: "Zhou Jingchen, the big boss of Xingyao Technology, right?"

Wenxi gripped the hem of her clothes tightly, her knuckles turning white from the force, and she kept her head down without saying a word.

"What's your relationship with him? Your lover?" Brother Jiang narrowed his eyes. "Here's what you'll do: go ask him for it and have him pay off your debt."

Wenxi's eyes widened in disbelief, and he roared, "Impossible!"

"I have nothing to do with him! Why should he pay for my debts?"

The other person stepped forward, grabbed her neck, and squeezed her so hard that she couldn't breathe instantly.

"It's okay? You two eat and live together, always inseparable, do you think I'm blind?"

"Why won't you lower your noble head? Do you still think you're the factory manager's daughter, a high and mighty little princess?"

Seeing Wenxi's face turn purple, he slowly released his hand, coldly smoothed her collar, and patted her shoulder.

"I'll give you three days to raise ten million, principal plus interest, not a penny less." His voice was light and ruthless. "Otherwise, we'll go to Xingyao Company and ask that Boss Zhou for it."

"This amount of money shouldn't be much to him."

Wenxi: "I have nothing to do with him! He won't give it to you!"

"No problem?" Brother Jiang scoffed, and the two men behind him joined in the laughter. "Then we'll cause trouble at his company, post on the Xinghe Forum, and block him at his doorstep."

"I already found out. His mother is a high-ranking official in the procuratorate, his father owns hundreds of shops near Shenzhen, and they live in Imperial Garden, right?"

He bent down, leaned close to Wenxi's ear, and spoke in a sinister tone:

"I'll bring a megaphone and sit in front of his house shouting—Wenxi owes money, Zhou Jingchen, pay it back!"

The laughter of the three men spread in the twilight, like poisonous needles piercing Wenxi's limbs and bones.

She covered her ears, closed her eyes in terror, her heart pounded as if falling into an endless abyss of darkness, and the light in her eyes slowly faded away.

She remained frozen in place until the group of people completely disappeared from sight, like a puppet whose soul had been taken away.

After a long while, she slowly squatted down, picked up her bag, stuffed the things back in, and stiffly moved back home step by step.

It was completely dark.

Wenxi curled up in the corner of the sofa, outside the window was a dark blue sky with a few lonely stars hanging there.

Her eyes were bloodshot, and the words she had heard kept echoing in her mind.

"Have you heard? Our company is probably preparing to go public within the next two years."

"That's right, Mr. Zhou has put in so much effort for this."

"He's keeping a very close eye on things now, scrutinizing every detail inside and out, and he won't tolerate the slightest mistake before the IPO."

"...My dad asked me a few days ago if Jingchen's company was about to go public. My second uncle works at the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and my dad said he would definitely give my second uncle a heads-up to ensure that Jingchen's business goes smoothly."

So, Wenxi, what can you give Zhou Jingchen?

You will become his stumbling block, you will tarnish his bright future, you will ruin his career, and you will destroy his dreams.

Mom is right, whoever gets involved with us is doomed.

Uncle was unlucky, Grandma and Uncle were unlucky, Aunt was unlucky, and now, it's Zhou Jingchen's turn to be unlucky.

Wenxi should not let Zhou Jingchen suffer.

For the first twenty years or so of his life, Zhou Jingchen was crippled in one leg, subjected to strange looks and ridicule from others. He couldn't run or jump; he was unlucky enough.

Having finally found her parents, healed her leg, and worked her way up to where she is today, how could she possibly drag him back into her quagmire?

Wenxi's shoulders trembled slightly, and tears silently fell onto her legs.

-

At 11 p.m., the door lock clicked softly.

Zhou Jingchen is back.

He opened the bedroom door, and a soft, sweet scent wafted into his nostrils. In the dim light, he saw the girl lying on the bed, seemingly asleep, her exquisite curves clearly visible under the thin blanket.

The pent-up frustration in my heart vanished the moment I saw her, and my furrowed brows softened and relaxed.

He tiptoed into the bathroom, the sound of running water filling the air.

Wenxi closed her eyes, but her eyelashes trembled as she quietly wiped away the moisture from the corners of her eyes.

A moment later, the mattress sank slightly, and a cool, masculine scent, mixed with a hint of alcohol, gently embraced her from behind.

Zhou Jingchen's kiss landed on her snow-white nape, like a feather brushing against her skin, yet carrying a burning heat.

His hand slipped under the hem of her nightgown, his fingertips tracing upwards along her slender waist...

The girl let out a soft moan, and in the darkness, he turned her body and kissed her pink lips.

His breath still carried the faint scent of alcohol and the mild taste of mint toothpaste. His thin lips gently caressed hers, tenderly sucking on them.

Wenxi responded to him with her red lips slightly parted, her slender arms encircling the back of his neck, their lips and teeth entwined.

"So proactive today?" His deep, husky voice, with its unique magnetism, rubbed against her ear.

Wenxi tilted her long, slender, snow-white neck back and said, "Mmm... Jin... come here."

Inside the bedroom, only the rustling sound of clothes could be heard.

Her nightgown and his pajamas were haphazardly dragged to the foot of the bed, hanging precariously from the edge.

"How much did you drink today?" she asked softly.

"I don't remember... I met with investors today, there were quite a lot of people, and we drank quite a bit..."

Wenxi's fingernails dug into his back. "From now on... drink less."

"Mmm... I'll listen to you, baby..." He buried his face in her neck, breathing heavily, and kissed her neck.

After a while, Zhou Jingchen lay down and held her slender waist with his hand, pinching her skin so hard that it left red marks.

The thin layer of sweat on his hard chest glistened faintly in the dim light, and his dark eyes were filled with lust.

He looked up, staring intently at her, his voice extremely hoarse: "Are you tired?"

Wenxi shook her head, her lower lip bitten until it turned red, and the stray hairs on her forehead were soaked with sweat and stuck to her smooth forehead.

"Zhou Jingchen..." The girl's voice was choked with sobs.

"Hmm?" His Adam's apple bobbed heavily, and he gripped her waist even tighter.

"I love you."
