Chapter 28 On-the-spot punishment
Inside Xie Weihong's room.
Duan Chengyi turned around from the window: "Wei Hong, what is Jia Zhangshi doing?"
"How could someone like Jia Zhangshi, who suffered such a great loss, possibly let it go?" Xie Weihong took a sip of water, her eyes calm.
He paused, then added, "Yi Zhonghai and his men won't let this go so easily. They've lost face, and they'll definitely get their revenge."
Duan Chengyi frowned: "Then what should we do? We can't just keep passively dealing with this, can we?"
"Of course not." Xie Weihong put down her cup, a cold glint in her eyes. "I was originally thinking of finding an excuse to 'teach' them a lesson during the day, but I didn't expect Jia Zhangshi to deliver herself to my door."
He looked at Duan Chengyi: "Uncle Duan, are you saying you want to test my abilities?"
Duan Chengyi's eyes lit up: "You mean..."
"Today is a good opportunity." Xie Weihong stood up, walked to the window, and looked outside through the gap in the curtains. "Jia Zhangshi is in a bad mood right now. If we provoke her a little more, she will definitely do something even more extreme."
"And then you have a reason to 'punish' her?" Duan Chengyi understood.
"Yes." Xie Weihong nodded, "And it was a reasonable punishment in full view of everyone."
He turned around and looked at Duan Chengyi: "Uncle Duan, what you need to do is to 'uphold justice' when the time is right."
Duan Chengyi nodded emphatically: "I understand. Don't worry, Director Lu instructed that as long as no one dies, the priority is to verify our capabilities."
The two exchanged a glance, and a tacit understanding was formed.
At this moment, in the courtyard.
Madam Jia was still slumped on the ground, sobbing. But the resentment in her eyes had reignited.
The more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she became. She, the dignified old lady of the Jia family, had been domineering in the courtyard for more than ten years, and now she was being beaten by a junior?
The neighbors hadn't left yet, gathering in twos and threes, whispering amongst themselves. Those glances, those whispers, felt like needles pricking her.
Jia Zhangshi moved to Xie Weihong's door and took a deep breath.
"Xie Weihong! Get out here right now!"
"Don't think you're safe just because you're hiding inside! Let me tell you, this isn't over yet!"
"If you don't apologize and pay my medical expenses, I'll come and cause trouble every day! I'll make your life a living hell!"
There was no movement inside.
"You little bastard! You're a cursed star who killed your parents! You're the one who killed them! Why don't you die with them?!"
The courtyard fell silent instantly upon hearing this.
Even Yi Zhonghai frowned; those words were too harsh.
But Madam Jia was beyond caring anymore. She had been holding back her anger for days, and after losing face so badly just now, all she wanted to do was unleash the most vicious insults.
"Let me tell you, your parents deserved to die! Who told them to meddle! And you deserved it too! A bastard without parents! You deserved to starve to death! To freeze to death! To die in a ditch and no one would even collect your body!"
The insults grew increasingly harsh.
The neighbors who had been watching couldn't stand it anymore. Some shook their heads, some turned and left, but no one dared to step forward to stop her—who in the courtyard didn't know how shrewish Jia Zhangshi was?
Yi Zhonghai initially wanted to advise against it, but then he thought it might be good for Jia Zhangshi to make a scene. The bigger the scene, the more pressure Xie Weihong would be under, and then he could come out to "mediate" and perhaps secure more benefits.
Liu Haizhong and Yan Bugui shared the same thought. The three exchanged a glance and remained silent in tacit agreement.
Seeing that no one was stopping her, Jia Zhangshi cursed even more fiercely.
"You little beast! Did you hear me?! Get out here! Get out here and kowtow to me to admit your mistake! Otherwise, I'll curse your ancestors for eight generations! I'll curse you to die a horrible death!"
The door opened.
Xie Weihong came out.
His face was calm, but his eyes were as cold as ice.
When Jia Zhangshi saw his gaze, she subconsciously shrank back, but then, remembering that there were so many people around, she became defiant again.
"What are you looking at! Am I wrong?! You're a bastard without parents! You're the one who killed your parents!"
Xie Weihong didn't speak, she just looked at her.
His gaze was so cold that it sent chills down Jia Zhangshi's spine. But she was already in a bind and could only brace herself: "What? You want to hit me? Come on! If you've got the guts, hit me in front of all these people! Let everyone see what kind of person you are!"
She even took a step forward, sticking her face out: "Hit me! Hit me here! If you don't, you're a coward!"
The courtyard was completely silent.
Everyone looked at Xie Weihong, waiting for his reaction.
Yi Zhonghai's lips curled into a cold smile—Go ahead and hit me. If you dare to lay a hand on me, this matter is settled today. Beating up an elder in front of so many people, you'll be in big trouble.
Liu Haizhong had already figured out how he would "uphold justice" later.
Yan Bugui was calculating how much "mediation fee" he could collect this time.
Xie Weihong slowly raised her hand.
Jia Zhangshi's eyes lit up—they really dare to hit? That's great!
But what she received was not a slap.
Xie Weihong's hand moved with lightning speed, grabbing the arm that was using her crutch.
"What...what are you doing?!" Jia Zhangshi was stunned.
Xie Weihong didn't answer, but just twisted her wrist.
"Snap!"
The crisp sound of bones breaking was particularly jarring in the quiet courtyard.
Before Jia Zhangshi could even let out a scream, Xie Weihong's other hand had already grabbed her ankle on her good leg.
With a gentle twist.
"Snap!"
Another sound.
Jia Zhangshi collapsed to the ground, both legs bent at bizarre angles. She opened her mouth wide, wanting to scream, but the pain prevented her from making a sound; she could only let out gasping gasps.
His face was covered in cold sweat, and his expression was so distorted that he was unrecognizable.
The courtyard was deathly silent.
Everyone was stunned.
Yi Zhonghai's cane fell to the ground with a thud. His eyes widened in disbelief—Xie Weihong had actually dared to lay a hand on him? And with such brutality?!
Liu Haizhong's legs went weak, and he almost fell. He looked at the twisted Jia Zhangshi on the ground, then at the expressionless Xie Weihong, and his back was instantly soaked with cold sweat.
Yan Bugui collapsed to the ground, trembling all over.
The neighbors who were watching were terrified, their faces turning deathly pale. Several women covered their mouths, almost screaming.
All of this happened too fast; from Xie Weihong's attack to Jia Zhangshi falling to the ground, it only took two or three seconds.
By the time everyone realized what was happening, Jia Zhangshi was already lying on the ground like a dead dog, barely breathing.
"My legs... my legs..." she finally uttered, weak, mournful, like a ghost's wail.
Xie Weihong looked down at her, her voice calm: "Now, both your legs are broken. Symmetrical."
These words, spoken casually, sent chills down everyone's spines.
Upon hearing this, Jia Zhangshi's eyes rolled back and she fainted.
"Mom!" Qin Huairu screamed and rushed over, but when she saw her mother-in-law's two twisted legs, she was so frightened that she sat down on the ground, trembling all over.
Yi Zhonghai finally reacted. He pointed at Xie Weihong, his voice trembling, "You...you...you dare to commit such a crime in broad daylight?!"
Xie Weihong turned to look at him: "Murder? Who saw it?"
"We all saw it!" Liu Haizhong shouted, mustering his courage. "Everyone saw it! You broke Jia's sister-in-law's leg!"
"Yes! We all saw it!" Yan Bugui also got up and shouted from behind Yi Zhonghai.
Xie Weihong smiled.
That smile was faint, yet it sent chills down one's spine.
"What did you see?" he asked. "Did you see Jia Zhangshi verbally abusing the children of martyrs, cursing the martyrs, using vicious language, trying to hit them, and then breaking her own leg?"
"You're talking nonsense!" Yi Zhonghai exclaimed angrily, "It was clearly you who hit him!"
"I hit him?" Xie Weihong raised an eyebrow. "How did I hit him? What did I use? How many times did I hit him?"
It's the same old questions again.
Yi Zhonghai opened his mouth, unable to answer.
Xie Weihong's movements were too fast; they didn't see the details clearly at all.
"Can't explain?" Xie Weihong looked around. "Did any of you see clearly how I broke her leg?"
No one dared to speak.
Those two moves were so fast they felt like an illusion. I didn't even see the details, let alone how Xie Weihong made them.
"Since no one saw it clearly, what makes you think I hit her?" Xie Weihong's voice turned cold. "Jia Zhangshi broke her own leg and is trying to pin it on me, and you're going to help her give false testimony?"
Yi Zhonghai was so angry that he trembled all over, but he had nothing to say.
Just then, Duan Chengyi came out of the house.
He was wearing a police uniform and had a serious expression.
When Yi Zhonghai saw him, he clung to him like a lifeline: "Chief Duan! You've come at the right time! We all saw Xie Weihong commit violence and assault! Arrest him immediately!"
Duan Chengyi glanced at him, then at Jia Zhangshi on the ground, and asked, "What happened?"
"He broke Jia's sister-in-law's leg!" Liu Haizhong blurted out, "In front of all of us!"
"Really?" Duan Chengyi turned to Xie Weihong. "Weihong, what happened?"
Xie Weihong calmly said, "Jia Zhangshi insulted the martyrs with vicious words and even tried to hit them. When I dodged, she lost her balance and broke her leg."
"You're talking nonsense!" Yi Zhonghai shouted, losing his temper. "You were the one who hit me!"
Duan Chengyi frowned: "Comrade Yi Zhonghai, watch your words."
He walked over to Jia Zhangshi, squatted down to examine her, and then stood up: "The injuries are indeed quite serious. Let's take her to the hospital first."
He took out his whistle and blew it. Soon, two people in white coats ran out from the backyard—they were medical staff who had been prepared in advance.
"Send him to the First People's Hospital," Duan Chengyi instructed. "Note that this is an 'accidental fall injury.'"
"Understood." The two medical staff skillfully lifted Jia Zhangshi onto a stretcher and quickly left the courtyard.
The whole process was so smooth that Yi Zhonghai and the others were dumbfounded.
After the stretcher left, Duan Chengyi turned around and looked at Yi Zhonghai and the other two: "I heard everything that happened just now."
Yi Zhonghai was secretly delighted—Duan Chengyi had heard that? That made things much easier!
But Duan Chengyi's next words plunged him into an icy abyss.
"Jia Zhangshi insulted the children of martyrs and cursed the martyrs with extremely vicious language. According to the 'Regulations on Administrative Penalties for Public Security,' she should be detained for education." Duan Chengyi's voice was serious. "As for her broken leg..."
He paused, then continued, "Comrade Xie Weihong has already made it very clear that she lost her balance and fell. Does anyone have a different opinion?"
Yi Zhonghai opened his mouth, wanting to say, "We all saw it," but looking into Duan Chengyi's cold eyes, he swallowed the words back.
He suddenly realized that Duan Chengyi was on Xie Weihong's side.
This discovery sent chills down his spine.
Liu Haizhong and Yan Bugui also realized this, their faces turned pale, and they dared not speak.
Duan Chengyi scanned the room and said in a loud voice, "Since everyone is up so early, let's start today's 'ideological education class' ahead of schedule."
He looked at Yi Zhonghai and the other two: "Assemble at the Intermediate People's Court in thirty minutes. If you are late... you will bear the consequences."
After saying that, he turned to Xie Weihong and said, "Weihong, you go back to your room and rest first. I'll need your 'guidance' for class later."
"Okay." Xie Weihong nodded and turned to go back into the house.
The door closed.
In the courtyard, only Yi Zhonghai and his two companions remained, along with a group of dumbfounded neighbors.
Duan Chengyi glanced at his watch: "It's 6:20 now. You have two and a half hours to prepare."
He paused, then added, "Think carefully about what you're going to say. Remember, you only get one chance."
After saying that, he went back to the backyard.
The courtyard was deathly silent.
After a long silence, Liu Haizhong finally said in a trembling voice, "Old Yi... what... what exactly happened?"
Yi Zhonghai remained silent.
He just stared at Xie Weihong's tightly closed door, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
