Yang Lijun pulled something out of his pocket—a round, tin object—weighed it in his hand, and then presented it to Chang Kun with great excitement.

"Xiao Kun, look! This is some great stuff that just arrived at the company. I went through a lot of trouble to get just one box. Director Ge got it from outside through someone else. There aren't many left in the whole company."

He spoke much faster than usual, his voice brimming with barely suppressed smugness.

Chang Kun took it and examined it closely.

The can wasn't big, and the metal shell was cool to the touch. It had a brightly colored label with a bunch of English words printed on it, none of which I recognized.

But he recognized the picture on the label—a few silvery fish that looked quite realistic, with shiny scales that looked fresh.

"Isn't this herring?! Could this be the legendary canned herring?" Chang Kun's expression changed slightly.

Yang Lijun was still rambling on, gesturing animatedly as he spoke.

"It took Director Ge so much effort to snatch this batch of goods. People only gave him a few boxes because of Director Ge's influence. His men fought tooth and nail for it. If he hadn't driven this batch of goods back from the train station, he wouldn't have had a chance to grab even one can."

Chang Kun had a strange expression. He had never eaten this thing in his previous life, but he had seen plenty of people complaining about it in short videos.

Some say it tastes worse than shit, while others say the biggest regret of their lives is opening a can of herring.

Whether it was true or false, he never tried it, but those descriptions were etched in his mind and he couldn't forget them.

Eating at night again? Don't make the whole family nauseous from the smell.

Xiuer ran out of the yard at some point, holding a half-eaten sweet potato in her hand, her cheeks bulging.

Seeing the can of food in Chang Kun's hand, her eyes lit up, and she rushed over to hug Chang Kun's leg, "Big brother! You brought back delicious food again!"

Chang Kun quickly returned the canned food to his brother-in-law, distancing himself from the can of herring. "This is what my brother-in-law brought back."

Xiuer's gaze immediately turned to Yang Lijun, her eyes filled with anticipation.

Yang Lijun straightened his back a bit more under her gaze, and reached out to pat the can: "Open it when we eat later, and we'll all eat together."

Xiuer nodded vigorously, stopping chewing the dried sweet potato in her mouth as if she wanted to empty her stomach.

Seeing Xiuer's greedy look, Chang Kun couldn't help but remind her, "Brother-in-law, this doesn't taste very good, it's even worse than soy milk."

Xiuer put her hands on her hips. "It has little fish drawn on it, how could it taste bad! Besides, soy milk isn't bad either!"

Looking at her face, which couldn't hide her craving, Chang Kun chuckled to himself, thinking, "I'll let you eat your fill later..."

The can of herring was temporarily placed on the stone table. Chang Kun squatted down and looked at Xiu'er, asking her what she had been doing at home today.

Xiuer flicked her braid, tilted her head and thought for a moment, counting on her fingers.

"I played with the squirrel in the morning, talked to the myna bird at noon, and Zixia came in the afternoon. We played together for a long time."

"Zixia even taught me kung fu!" Xiu'er's eyes lit up as she said this, like two stars twinkling.

Chang Kun was curious and asked her to demonstrate.

Xiuer rolled up her sleeves, revealing two fair and tender little arms. She clenched her little fists, spread her legs, and assumed a horse stance.

The horse stance wasn't very stable; the buttocks were sticking out and the knees were pointing outwards.

She took a deep breath, puffed out her cheeks, and threw a punch with a "Hey!" followed by a "Ha!" and another punch. Although her movements were immature, each punch was precise and methodical, carrying an indescribable momentum.

Chang Kun and Yang Lijun exchanged a glance, both clicking their tongues in amazement.

Yang Lijun stroked his chin: "How did Xiuer learn this kung fu? Her stance is quite correct."

Xiuer withdrew her fist, raised her chin high, and looked smug.

"When my uncle was teaching Sister Hongxia, Zixia watched and learned from her. Once Zixia had learned it, she taught her too."

Looking at Xiuer's smug little face, Chang Kun shook his head inwardly.

My uncle taught Sister Hongxia martial arts; he really raised her like a son.

I wonder if Hongxia was still upset about the bruise she got last time, because she went home and pestered her dad to teach her a few more moves, ready to get her revenge.

As the group was talking, the courtyard gate was pushed open.

Cheng Min walked in front, with Xiao Qing and Xiao Mu following behind, each carrying a schoolbag.

Xiuer's eyes lit up, and she sprang up from the ground like a spring. She ran over, grabbed Xiaoqing's hand, then Xiaomu's hand, then Xiaoshui's hand, and dragged the three of them to the stone table.

Xiuer pointed at the can of herring on the stone table, tilted her head back, and held her chin high, looking as proud as a general who had won a battle.

"Look! My brother-in-law brought back some canned food! He said it's some kind of foreign import! It has little fish drawn on it, and it's full of little fish inside. It's so delicious!"

Her tone made it sound as if she had already eaten.

Xiaoqing looked at the can of food; the can was covered in English, and she couldn't understand a single word. She frowned.

Xiao Mu leaned closer to take a look and smelled the canned food, but couldn't smell anything.

Xiao Shui stood on tiptoe, gripping the edge of the stone table with both hands, her eyes fixed on the fish pattern on the can, and swallowed hard.

Several little girls huddled around the stone table, chattering excitedly, jostling each other, none of them wanting to fall behind.

Qing was the first to shout, "Big brother, hurry up and open it! We're all starving!"

Xiao Mu nodded in agreement, her mouth practically drooling.

Xiao Shui was even more direct. She stood on tiptoe to try and open the can, but she couldn't open it no matter what she did, and she stomped her feet in frustration.

Looking at their expressions, Chang Kun shook his head speechlessly.

After school, these girls used to run around the yard like crazy. Some rode donkeys, some fed squirrels, and some teased the myna birds. They wouldn't eat properly unless they were scolded a few times.

Now look at this, a can of herring and several people's eyes are shining, as if they haven't eaten for days.

Yang Lijun stood to the side, looking at the girls' greedy expressions, and hesitated for a moment: "Why don't we open it and give it to them? This can isn't very big, and by the time Mom and Dad come back, there probably won't be any left. It's better to give it all to the girls."

Chang Kun glanced at him, then at the few little girls staring at him expectantly, and nodded, "Okay."

The girls cheered, but Chang Kun raised his hand to stop them.

"If you're going to eat this, there are three rules. Each of you four must finish two bites. If you don't—"

He glanced at the group and said, "Xiao Qing, Xiao Mu, and Xiao Shui, do an extra math problem."

"As for Xiuer, write your own name five times, and then write the names of your whole family once each."

The four little girls cheered in unison.

Xiuer patted her chest and said confidently, "Who do you think you are? Don't even mention a couple of bites, I could finish an entire can of food!"

Xiao Qing nodded in agreement: "Exactly, exactly! This little bit isn't even enough to fill a tooth gap!"

The four girls were all full of confidence, as if the canned food contained not herring, but some extraordinary delicacy.

Cheng Min stood to the side, watching Chang Kun's serious expression, and the corners of her mouth slowly curved up.

She knew Chang Kun was probably up to some bad idea again, but she didn't expose him. She just stood aside with a smile, waiting to see what would happen.
