Chapter 726 Something's Wrong
Zixia was so frightened that she shrank back behind Liu Meiling, clinging to her mother's back with her eyes tightly closed and her mouth open, crying loudly.
Liu Meiling turned around, hugged Zixia, and glared at Xiuer.
"Alright, alright, stop scaring her. Look how frightened she is."
Xiuer chuckled, untied the snake from her arm, shook it a couple of times, and the snake's body drew a few circles in the air before coiling back around her arm.
Hongxia stood to the side, hands on her hips, laughing so hard she was doubled over, wiping the corners of her eyes with the back of her hand as she laughed.
Wenwen watched the family laughing and joking, her eyes filled with envy. Her parents were gone, and she didn't even have any brothers or sisters, yet she seemed to be able to have such a lively life.
Chang Kun shook his head. Of the several maids in his family, only Zixia and Xiaomu were well-behaved. The others were either tomboys or mischievous and unruly. None of them were easy to deal with.
Liu Meiling tied on an apron, rolled up her sleeves, and squatted down by the pool to deal with the large snake.
Hongxia squatted by another basin, holding a pheasant in her hand, struggling to pluck its feathers. The feathers were soaked in hot water, and a fishy smell mixed with steam rose up.
She wrinkled her nose, but her hands didn't stop working.
Wenwen helped by picking out the long feathers that had been plucked and placing them neatly in a stack.
Zixia and Xiuer squatted down beside them, waiting for the colorful feathers.
Xiuer was quick; she snatched one after another from Wenwen, clutching them in her hand like treasures. In no time, she had a large handful, all sorts of colors, shimmering in the sunlight.
Zixia was too slow and couldn't beat Xiuer. She was so anxious that she stomped her feet, pouted, and tears were about to fall.
Seeing her pitiful appearance, Xiuer took out a few of the prettiest ones from her hand and stuffed them into her mouth, muttering, "What a crybaby, and she dares to say she's older than me..."
Zixia took it and immediately smiled. The two little girls ran to the stone table and huddled together, studying how to make shuttlecocks.
Chang Kun walked to the edge of the fishpond, spotted a yellow catfish, pinched it with his fingers, flicked its tail twice, and threw it into the bucket next to him.
One, two, three, four, five—the yellow catfish splashed around in the bucket, water spraying all over the ground.
Hongxia peeked out and exclaimed, "Wow! Yellow catfish! This fish is delicious, the meat is tender, and it's best stewed with tofu!"
As the sun slowly sank below the horizon, Cheng Min returned home from school with Xiao Qing, Xiao Mu, and Xiao Shui.
Before Xiaoqing could even put down her schoolbag, she saw a pile of colorful feathers on the stone table. Her eyes lit up instantly, and she threw her schoolbag onto the stool and reached out to grab them.
Xiao Mu and Xiao Shui ran over as well, their three hands reaching for the pile of feathers at the same time, fighting over them like they were in a brawl.
Xiuer panicked, covering herself with both hands and shouting, "This is mine! I took it first!"
Zixia, her voice even shriller than Xiuer's, exclaimed, "This is mine too!"
Five little girls huddled around the stone table, chattering away.
You push me, I shove you, we're fighting tooth and nail, feathers flying everywhere.
Liu Meiling, annoyed by the noise and still dealing with the snake, yelled at the group of girls, "Stop making noise! If you keep making noise, all the feathers will be confiscated!"
Nobody listened to her, and the argument escalated.
She sighed and muttered, "I knew I shouldn't have brought these pheasants back. Look at these, they won't be quiet until tonight."
Hearing this, Chang Kun chuckled and said, "Then I'll go ask someone for a few more."
He turned and left the courtyard, then turned a corner in the alley. Taking advantage of the absence of anyone, he took out another sack of things from his spatial storage and carried it back home.
When the courtyard gate was pushed open again, Xiu'er was the first to rush over, followed by Xiao Qing. Several young maids surrounded the sack, helping to untie the ropes.
The sack was opened, and several pheasants huddled together, their feathers even more beautiful than the previous ones, their emerald green tail feathers trailing long.
Xiao Qing exclaimed "Wow!", reached in and touched it, pulled out a few long feathers, held them above her head like a flag, and ran around in circles in the yard.
Xiao Mu and Xiao Shui chased after them, grabbing at the pile, while Xiu'er and Zi Xia also forgot about their own piles and ran over to grab the new ones.
The courtyard was in complete chaos, with laughter, shouts, and footsteps all mixed together, and the roof was almost blown off.
Chang Kun then pulled out cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, and corn from the sack, and finally pulled out two large watermelons from under the sack.
Wenwen stared wide-eyed, still clutching the unwashed scallions in her hand.
She nudged Hongxia's arm quietly and whispered in Hongxia's ear, "Does your cousin eat like this every day?"
Hongxia chuckled and lowered her voice, moving closer to Wenwen. "I told you he's capable. Just eat as much as you want."
She paused, then lowered her voice even further, "What have you thought about what I told you last time?"
Wenwen's face flushed instantly. She twirled the scallion between her fingers twice, her voice barely audible, "No way! I can't stay at your house! That's not fair!"
"I'm only thinking about your safety! It's so inconvenient for a young woman to be out all alone!"
"As long as you're willing, my mother will definitely agree. We can sleep in one room then, and Zixia can sleep with my parents."
Wenwen refused, her face flushed as she shook her head, her braids swinging back and forth, her ears so red they looked like they could bleed.
Hongxia tossed the pheasant into the basin, stood up, wiped her hands on her apron, and pulled Wenwen by the arm toward the corner of the wall.
The two people stood with their backs to the courtyard, heads close together, whispering to each other in hushed tones, their words barely audible.
All I could see was Wenwen's shoulders slightly hunched, and Hongxia's mouth opening and closing rapidly, as if she were trying to persuade someone.
Liu Meiling squatted by the basin, cleaning the snake. She looked up, glanced at it, and chuckled.
"These two girls haven't seen each other for many years, but their friendship is still so strong."
Chang Kun's gaze swept over Hongxia and Wenwen.
The two were still huddled in the corner, Hongxia's hand on Wenwen's shoulder, Wenwen's head down, and Hongxia was very close.
The two shadows stretched long in the setting sun, overlapping each other, making it impossible to tell who was whose.
Chang Kun chuckled inwardly. His second aunt was too naive; didn't she notice that something was off between the two of them?
These days, people are very reserved in expressing their feelings. Boyfriends and girlfriends don't even dare to walk side by side on the street; there's always a person's distance between them.
It's common to see young girls holding hands on the street, but those are children.
Hongxia and Wenwen are both in their mid-twenties, holding hands and whispering to each other, huddled in a corner. This scene just doesn't seem right.
I hope I'm just overthinking it.
Hongxia has always been a tomboy since childhood, raised by her father like a son. Maybe she's just acting out of loyalty to her friends and treating Wenwen like a brother.
But what if it isn't?
Sister Hongxia never liked going on blind dates. If what she thought was true was really going to be a big problem, her second aunt would probably skin her alive.
Auntie probably never imagined such a thing.
