Chapter 130 The Escape and the Cabin in the Woods
The shadows in the woods once again provided crucial cover for Lin Qi. The dense gunfire roared behind him like a farewell cannon, stirring up a flock of birds that flew into the night sky. Lin Qi didn't dare to look back even once, and only dared to run for his life through the woods.
Soon, he returned to the place where he had parted ways with Sylvia.
By this time, Sylvia had stood up again. She leaned weakly against a tree, glancing worriedly every now and then in the direction from which the gunshots had come.
She was startled when someone suddenly rushed out of the woods, but when she recognized Lin Qi, her fear was immediately replaced by worry: "Ah, you're finally back!...Why are there gunshots again, and they keep going?"
"I killed one, but they have reinforcements."
Lin Qi explained succinctly. He didn't dare waste even a second, so he threw the shotgun in his hand at Sylvia, turned on the flashlight, and without hesitation, picked Sylvia up and held her in his arms.
Then, he took off running in the opposite direction of the gunshot!
Sylvia, startled, clung tightly to his neck: "...What's going on!"
"Run! We have no choice but to run!"
Lin Qi's voice was completely hoarse, his breathing was heavy like a bellows, his wounds felt like they were being cut by knives, and every step he took felt like his legs were on fire.
But he had no intention of stopping. He gritted his teeth and squeezed out the last bit of strength in his body, running wildly through the dark forest!
The only advantage over before was that Lynch finally had a flashlight. This meant he no longer needed to carefully watch his step while running.
But apart from that, everything is heading in an even worse direction.
Gunshots rang out behind him one after another, like the drumbeats of death, but Lin Qi's physical strength was already close to the limit, and even his vision was beginning to blur!
The night wind howled, and the smells of gunpowder and blood mingled in the air.
Lin Qi had no intention of finding a way out of the valley anymore—he had no time or energy to think. All he could do was instinctively run deeper into the forest!
Fortunately, perhaps the pursuing cultists were distracted by tending to their wounded comrades, or perhaps they were wary of the hunting rifle that Lynch had stolen.
Regardless, Lin Qi could clearly feel that the gunshots behind him were getting further and further away, gradually becoming sparse and indistinct.
Even so, Lin Qi still dared not stop running.
Just kidding, if he encountered a gun, he could still try his luck and use the terrain in the forest to assassinate the opponent.
Faced with so many gunmen, the only way for him to survive was to run away as far as possible, even if it meant running as far as possible!
Stopping now is like gambling.
If you win the bet, you'll only get a little breathing room; but if you lose, you'll lose your life!
Ha, you're in heaven now!
And so, Lin Qi kept running, until the scenery in front of him became a blur, until all he could hear was ringing in his ears, and until his mind went blank.
After running for an unknown amount of time, just when Lin Qi felt he was about to give up, a relatively open area suddenly appeared in the shadows of the trees ahead.
Without the dense canopy of trees to block the light, the moonlight poured down, illuminating the scene in that area.
A two-story wooden house appeared silently in the night.
Under the moonlight, the wooden house seemed a bit old at first glance, but upon closer inspection, its various details appeared to be perfectly fitted, with the planks nailed tightly and the rivets hammered in firmly, giving it an old-fashioned and sturdy feel.
A SUV was parked next to the cabin, its body covered in mud, indicating it had been parked there for some time. A winding path ran alongside the cabin, starting in front of the door and leading nowhere.
Lynch's eyes lit up immediately, and Sylvia couldn't help but exclaim in a low voice with delight, "There's a house...maybe someone lives here!"
Upon finally seeing the creations of modern society, Lin Qi instinctively rushed towards them as if he had found a lifeline.
He ran to the door of the cabin, and without even catching his breath, began banging on it: "Is anyone home? Help! We've been in a car accident and need help!"
Sylvia jumped down from Lynch's arms and followed suit, knocking on the door: "Please help us!"
The knocking echoed clearly through the woods under the cover of night, but the house remained silent, with no response.
A wave of frustration washed over Lin Qi. He scratched his head and knocked harder: "Is anyone home? Please help us!"
There was still no answer from inside the cabin. But as Lin Qi knocked loudly, the cabin door creaked open.
The sound was pushed away by Lin Qi!
This door wasn't locked!
The screeching sound of the wooden door opening was like a bucket of cold water poured over their heads, instantly calming Lynch and Sylvia down.
As he stood in front of the cabin, knocking on the door and catching his breath, Lin Qi's rationality gradually returned as his brain regained oxygen. He finally realized that this lonely cabin standing alone in the woods seemed somewhat eerie.
Who would live in such a deserted little valley?
Moreover, in the middle of the night, the wooden house wasn't even locked...
Recalling the many horror movies he had watched, Lin Qi had a bad feeling.
However, he also knew in his heart that no matter how strange the wooden house looked, they had to go inside and find out.
The cultists were right behind them. Although the gunshots and footsteps had faded into the distance, they could come after them again at any moment.
Just because we managed to shake them off this time doesn't mean we'll be so lucky next time.
The two wounded soldiers were running around in the dense forest; they would be dragged to their deaths sooner or later.
Regardless, this cabin was their last hope of surviving tonight.
Lynch gritted his teeth, mustered his courage, and pushed the door of the cabin open completely. Then, he helped Sylvia and carefully walked inside.
The cabin was dark, though not dim, because the entrance hall was located in the cabin's living room, and on the side of the living room, a red brick fireplace was burning brightly.
By the light of the fireplace and the flashlight, Lynch could roughly make out the scene inside the cabin.
The living room wasn't large, but it was spotless and tidy. An old Persian-style rug covered the wooden floor, and a huge elk head specimen hung on the wall, its antlers stretching out to the sides, casting a menacing shadow in the dim light.
In one corner of the living room stood a sturdy oak dining table, on which sat a half-empty bottle of whiskey and several empty glasses.
The shelf against the wall was filled with various tools: a hammer, a handsaw, a fishing rod, and a rather sharp-looking logging axe.
Apart from a faint stench permeating the air, there seemed to be nothing unusual here, not at all like the eerie place Lin Qi had imagined.
The sight before them calmed Lynch and Sylvia down a bit.
Sylvia spoke softly, "This place... seems quite peaceful? Perhaps a hunter lives here?"
Lin Qi nodded: "It could also be that kind of elderly person who doesn't like to interact with people. After all, there's a road right in front of the house, and it doesn't actually take long to drive from here to Maple Valley Town."
"Thinking about it this way, maybe they were just sleeping soundly and didn't hear us knocking?"
'
Thinking this, Lin Qi stood in the center of the living room and shouted again, "Excuse me? Is anyone home? Sorry to bother you?"
However, the cabin remained quiet.
Tonight, no one answers.
