When Zhao Shanhe pushed open the curtain of Old Sun's dugout, it was already completely dark.

The curtain was suddenly flung open, and a chilling wind, carrying fine snowflakes, howled into the warm room, causing the sparks in the brazier to leap wildly.

Old Sun was sitting cross-legged on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) smoking his pipe. Hearing the noise, he didn't even lift his eyelids, but first slowly hummed:

"Oh, so our Director Zhao actually knows how to come back? I thought you were on some mountain, clinging to some vixen and unwilling to leave, so much so that you'd put out the fire."

Zhao Shanhe did not respond.

He stepped into the room and bolted the door shut behind him.

The Azure Dragon and the Black Dragon followed them in, their thick claws stomping on the ground, bringing with them a trail of sticky mud and snow.

Old Sun wanted to say a few more sarcastic remarks, but a glance out of the corner of his eye caused his pipe to freeze in mid-air.

The two dogs didn't burrow under the kang as usual, but stood warily at the door. Black Dragon's mouth still had a layer of dried, hardened, dark red bloodstains, marks left from tearing raw flesh.

Old Sun then lifted his cloudy yet sharp eyelids.

His gaze shifted from the dog, finally settling on Zhao Shanhe's fur coat, which was torn to shreds by wolf claws and had a large patch of dark bloodstains on the chest.

Snapped.

Old Sun slammed his pipe down on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), his teasing smile vanishing instantly, replaced by a gloomy expression.

"Don't try to talk your way out of this."

"This room reeks of blood... Tell me, where did this happen? What kind of weird thing is going on?"

Zhao Shanhe leaned the gun against the wall, walked to the water vat, scooped up half a ladle of cold water with ice floating on it, and drank it all in one gulp.

The bone-chilling cold suppressed the taste of gunpowder in his throat. He wiped his mouth, his eyes sharp as knives.

"On the south slope, someone is double-crossing someone else."

"An old man, with a son and an apprentice."

"My son's head is broken, and I sent my apprentice away. As for the old man, I sent him into the woods."

Old Sun's previously relaxed face suddenly tightened as he looked at Zhao Shanhe:

"One got away? What did the old one... look like?"

"He was in his sixties, carrying a homemade gun with an extended barrel. His right leg was unsteady when he ran; he was lame."

When Old Sun heard the word "cripple," his eyelids twitched, and he immediately let out a cold laugh:

"Han Laowai".

"That old bastard has been hiding for so many years without any news. I thought he had long since died in some dark ditch and rotted into mud."

Zhao Shanhe raised his eyelids: "Grandpa Sun, do you know him?"

Old Sun tapped his pipe on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and sneered:

"know?"

"How could I not recognize you?"

"More than ten years ago, I almost used a broken spine to dislocate this old cabbage's head."

Zhao Shanhe's eyes flickered slightly, but he didn't interrupt.

Old Sun squinted, as if recalling something from long ago, and the wrinkles on his face deepened:

"Back then, there was a fur trader named Tian outside Laoyagou who brought two assistants into the mountains to collect mink pelts."

"He's not a bad person, he's just greedy."

"He carried a bag of banknotes and wanted to bypass the commune to secretly buy hides from the mountain runners at low prices."

"As a result, the money was exposed."

"That old dog Han Laowai has his eye on it."

Old Sun took a drag of his cigarette, his voice growing colder:

"That day, I went into the mountains to set traps and heard gunshots coming from the gully, so I crept over to take a look."

"Guess what I saw?"

Old Sun said:

"That leather dealer surnamed Tian was kneeling in the snow with his hands raised, repeatedly shouting that he would give me everything and all the money, just spare my life."

"Next to him lay his young apprentice. The boy was only a teenager, probably just sent out by the commune to work, and had never seen a gun in his life."

"Han Laowai was standing right in front of him, holding that long homemade gun in his hand."

Old Sun's knuckles were turning slightly white as he gripped the pipe, his teeth clenched tightly.

"That old bastard didn't even utter a single stammer before he started yelling at the young waiter."

"The child didn't utter a sound, and half of his head was sprayed all over the face of the leather dealer surnamed Tian. The man surnamed Tian was so frightened that he couldn't speak, and a large wet patch appeared in his crotch."

"After taking the money and tickets, Han Laowai used that foreign cannon to smash Tian's skull open. That old bastard did clean work; how could he leave any survivors in this kind of business that would wipe out his lineage? After he finished collecting the goods, he was preparing to drag the two corpses to the dead mine pit in Blind Man's Gully and fill them up."

"That's when this old dog found me."

"When Han Laowai turned around and saw me, he raised the homemade gun that was still emitting blue smoke and pointed it at me."

"Luckily, I've spent half my life rolling around in the woods, and I knew something was wrong when I heard the sound of the homemade gun being fired. I suddenly lunged behind an old red pine tree, and the iron shot he was filling was off by half an inch, grazing my scalp and tearing off a piece of bark."

"I was young and hot-blooded back then. Seeing this old bastard kill someone to silence them, my murderous intent surged up. I lowered my body and used the old red pines in the woods as cover to rush up to the old dog in a few steps."

"His leg was lame, so he couldn't run. He could only try to poke me with the barrel of his cannon. I pulled out the broken spine from my waist, and with a backhand slash, I severed the tendons in his left hand! The long homemade cannon clattered to the ground."

"I originally intended to slit his throat and dismember the old dog, but that old bastard was utterly disgusting!"

"Seeing that I was about to kill him, he suddenly threw the remaining half of the packet of medicated powder, along with the embers from the stove, at my face."

"While my eyes were blindfolded, the old man, like a gecko with a broken tail, risked losing a tendon in his hand and rolled himself into a steep snow ditch. The bottom of the ditch was full of ice shards and rocks that never melted, but he used the momentum of rolling to slip away, gun and all, through a crevice in the ice on the other side of Blind Man's Gully."

Old Sun exhaled a long puff of smoke, causing the flames in the dugout to flicker.

"As soon as I got down the mountain, I reported the matter to the commune."

"The police officers, along with the joint defense team, turned the old mines in Laoyagou, Nanpo, and Xiazigou upside down, but they couldn't find a single trace of them."

"From then on, the authorities knew that a deadly old mountain demon was lurking in these deep mountains and forests, and his wanted poster was always displayed."

"But this old man who died without a son is also slippery. He has completely disappeared into the deepest part of the mountains and forests, and even this Kaoshan Village dares not take a step closer. Everyone said that he died in Blind Man's Gully, but I didn't expect that he was still breathing."

Zhao Shanhe's eyes were as deep and still as a dry well as he coldly uttered two words:

"He's a menace."

Old Sun slammed his pipe heavily on the table, his face as dark as a block of iron.

"Therefore, my dear land, when you do something, you must go all the way!"

The fire in the cellar was blown by the cold wind outside, and sparks suddenly burst out, illuminating the old man's deeply lined face.

Old Sun's voice was as if it had been quenched in ice water, revealing an undeniable ruthlessness: "You not only ruined his plans this time, but you also killed his son. You've cut off his roots! That old bastard is a mad dog now, capable of anything that will wipe out his lineage."

"He will definitely retaliate, and it won't be long."

"You're not the same wild boy you used to be, going into the mountains alone, hunting, and then just packing up and leaving."

You have a family, a wife and children.

"That heartless old bastard Han Laowai, if he really wanted to bite someone, he wouldn't come at you head-on with a gun. He'd sniff out your roots first, and then, when you weren't looking, he'd go straight for your wife and kids and kill them!"

Click.

Zhao Shanhe swiftly pulled the lever downwards with his right hand, instantly chambering a brass bullet with a startlingly crisp sound in the cramped room.

He slowly stood up, carrying the hunting rifle that reeked of strong gunpowder smoke.

The flickering firelight illuminated his cold, expressionless face.

He doesn't have that chance anymore.

Zhao Shanhe's voice was extremely low, yet it carried a chilling ruthlessness:

"I'll find him before he does and kill him!"
