On the main road of Hongxing Machinery Factory, it just so happened to be the afternoon shift change point.
Several workers wearing faded blue overalls were squatting under the poplar trees by the roadside.
The young fitter Qiangzi went over and squatted down next to the old worker Zhang, staring longingly at the pipe in Zhang's hand.
"Master Zhang, please give me a puff, I'm itching all over and it's really uncomfortable."
Qiangzi rubbed his hands, which were covered in grease and dirt, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he swallowed hard, his mouth watering.
Master Zhang chuckled at his pitiful look.
He squinted, puffing on his pipe, and chuckled, "Didn't you complain before that these lousy leaves from my cigarettes were too harsh on your throat and insist on smoking those cigarettes with handles? What are you doing here smoking this today?"
Qiangzi smacked his lips with a bitter face: "Master Zhang, I'm broke. I'm penniless right now, I can't even afford a box of matches, let alone be picky."
Master Zhang chuckled and handed over the copper cigarette holder.
Qiangzi took it as if it were a treasure, put it in his mouth and sucked on it for two big gulps.
"Alright, alright, a few puffs will do!"
When Master Zhang saw that half a pot of tobacco had turned completely red, he snatched it back with a pained expression and angrily tapped Qiangzi's arm with his pipe, "Are you trying to pump water here, you little brat!"
Qiangzi coughed from the strong smell of the dry tobacco, smacked his lips, rubbed his hands together as if he hadn't had enough, and squatted down silently.
Master Zhang tapped the sole of his shoe to remove the ash from his cigarette. Seeing his appearance, he couldn't help but scold him.
"You young men, once you have money, you either go out to eat and drink or buy useless things to show off. You don't even know how to save some money for yourselves."
Master Zhang pointed at him with his pipe: "You're really at a loss now that you've run into a problem, aren't you? You're nineteen this year, aren't you? You still need to save money to get married. With the way you spend your money, what girl would dare to be with you?"
Qiangzi squatted under the tree roots, his face full of frustration.
"Master Zhang, I really didn't make this up."
Qiangzi's voice was bitter. "Ever since the factory couldn't pay us for the first three months, I haven't dared to spend money lavishly. Now, I have to be extremely careful with every penny I have!"
Mr. Zhang was a little puzzled: "Then where did the half-month's salary you received the day before yesterday go?"
"We didn't receive a single penny for the first three months. Our whole family borrowed money everywhere and ended up in a huge debt."
Qiangzi sighed, irritably tugging at the dry grass on the ground. "This money that just came in, I didn't even have time to warm it up before it all went to help with famine and pay off debts. The last two or three yuan I had were used to buy some eggs and cornmeal for my mother, and there wasn't a single coin left."
After listening, Master Zhang's scolding expression gradually disappeared.
Looking at Qiangzi's miserable face, bent over by life's hardships, he finally softened, sighed, reached into his pocket, pulled out a crumpled brown paper package, and handed it over.
"Here, I have some leftover tobacco leaves. Go find some scraps of newspaper and roll them up to smoke."
Qiangzi's eyes lit up, and he quickly took it with both hands, his eyes even a little red: "Thank you, Master Zhang!"
He carefully tucked the tobacco leaves into his pocket, then let out a long sigh.
"Oh, when will these miserable days ever end?"
Qiangzi squatted under the tree roots, rubbing his face haphazardly with both hands: "I don't know if this new factory director, Gao, can do a better job than the previous factory director, Liang, and lead our Hongxing Factory. Otherwise, we really don't know how we'll get by."
Master Zhang tapped his pipe on the sole of his shoe and snorted coldly.
"Hmph, I don't think this guy has a chance."
Master Zhang glanced in the direction of the factory office building.
"That person looks very refined, he smiles at everyone, and speaks very kindly."
"But look at his pretentious manner."
Master Zhang spat on the ground, his face full of disdain: "The other day, Old Song from the second canteen ran into him in the courtyard. He went up to him with a big smile, trying to shake his gloves and get on his good side. But guess what? He looked down and saw that Old Song's hands were covered in flour and coal dust. His brows were furrowed so tightly that he didn't even want to touch him, and just put his hands behind his back!"
"What kind of behavior is this? When Director Li from the Municipal Bureau came to inspect our factory, he was willing to shake hands with the workers who were covered in oil. But he's complaining that we're dirty!"
Master Zhang tucked his pipe into his waistband, his tone growing increasingly somber.
"A person like him has no heart in the factory at all. He's a master at instigating internal strife and putting on a show. He's not on our side at all, and he's definitely not on the side of us workers. I feel that if this factory is handed over to him, it will cause a huge mess sooner or later."
After hearing this, Qiangzi felt a chill run down his spine, and his brows furrowed into a deep knot.
"Then what...?"
Just as Qiangzi was about to ask, "Then why is he still the head of the factory?", a series of heavy, chaotic footsteps suddenly came from afar.
Qiangzi casually raised his head and glanced at the road.
He froze instantly.
"Master Zhang... Master Zhang..."
Qiangzi's voice trembled, and he suddenly grabbed Zhang Shifu's greasy sleeve tightly, his fingers shaking.
"Look over there!"
Master Zhang turned his head in the direction Qiangzi was pointing.
His previously cloudy old eyes widened instantly, and the pipe hanging from his waist almost fell to the ground.
A dark cloud, so thick it was hard to breathe, loomed over the wide main road of the Hongxing Machinery Factory.
Old Hei carried the rusty iron rod with its sharpened tip and strode ahead.
A dozen or so men from Kaoshantun followed closely behind him.
These men, driven to the brink of despair, exuded a menacing aura that kept strangers at bay.
The workers who were originally gathered by the roadside smoking and chatting were all stunned by this reckless display of courage.
Qiangzi swallowed hard, his voice trembling, "Master Zhang, what are they going to do?"
Master Zhang smacked his lips, a hint of reluctance flashing in his eyes.
He reached out and grabbed Qiangzi's arm, who was still squatting on the ground in a daze, and pulled him up.
"These guys from the countryside have been driven to the brink."
Master Zhang sighed in a low voice, "Let's go, stand back a bit. It looks like someone's going to die at the security office today."
The workers who were originally gathered by the roadside smoking and chatting were all stunned by this reckless display of courage.
Everyone, their faces pale, retreated to the drainage ditches on both sides of the road, creating a path for the wide road.
Old Hei ignored the stares from those around him.
They marched straight toward the security building in the very center of the factory area.
The two thick wooden doors covered with iron sheets in the lobby on the first floor were tightly closed, and the faint sounds of several security officers laughing and boasting could be heard from inside.
Old Hei walked up to the steps without stopping even half a step.
He strode up the steps, suddenly raised his right foot, which was wearing a worn-out yellow rubber shoe, and with all his might, kicked hard at the gap between the two doors.
"Bang!"
A deafening roar.
The bolt inside the door couldn't withstand such a desperate force and was forcefully knocked out.
The two heavy doors slammed against the walls like kites with broken strings, causing the white plaster on top of the door frames to fall down in a flurry.
The security officers who were sitting around the table smoking and playing cards were startled by the loud noise and trembled, scattering their playing cards all over the floor.
