Orthopedic ward, First Municipal Hospital.

The pungent smell of disinfectant mixed with the odor of cheap ointment lingered in the stuffy room.

Gao Wenbin lay stiffly on the hospital bed by the window, his chest wrapped in thick bandages, and his right leg in a cast and suspended high in the air.

With each breath, the two broken ribs felt like they were being pierced by steel needles, causing him to break out in a cold sweat that streamed down his pale forehead.

He gritted his teeth, the muscles in his cheeks twitching violently from the intense pain and resentment.

Recalling that kick at the Red Star Machinery Factory, Gao Wenbin felt a surge of anger rising in his chest.

He, the head of the work group personally appointed and dispatched by the deputy secretary of the municipal party committee, was actually kicked away by a peasant from the countryside in front of hundreds of people.

If Zhao Shanhe isn't dealt with completely, how will he maintain his authority in front of the workers at the Red Star Machinery Factory?

Gao Wenbin was breathing heavily, his bloodshot eyes staring intently at the white wall opposite him, looking over the bed.

On the mottled wall, there was a slightly worn-out propaganda poster.

The workers and farmers in the painting stand side by side, holding their sickles and hammers high, their eyes resolute and fervent.

Looking at the worker holding a hammer in the painting, Gao Wenbin's vision momentarily blurred.

That face seemed to instantly transform into the faces of the hundreds of onlookers on the main road of the Red Star Factory.

Those eyes, filled with disdain, mockery, and glee, were like poisoned knives, piercing his pride.

An indescribable surge of rage and shame, mixed with a sharp pain in his chest, slammed open the top of his head with a "bang".

Gao Wenbin's mind was buzzing. Ignoring the pulling sensation in his ribs, he suddenly stretched out his uninjured left arm, grabbed the chipped enamel mug from the metal cabinet next to him, gritted his teeth, and smashed it hard against the propaganda poster.

"Clang!"

A piercingly loud bang exploded in the narrow hospital room.

The enamel mug hit the wall, bounced, and landed on the ground, instantly denting a large chunk of it.

Half a vat of boiling water mixed with dark brown tea leaves splashed everywhere, dripping down the propaganda poster and splashing a brown puddle on the cement floor.

"Zhao Shanhe, you damned dog who doesn't know what's good for him."

Gao Wenbin gasped for breath, the bandages wrapped around his chest heaving violently, his cloudy eyes flashing with a frenzied desire for revenge: "Once I've recovered and gone back, I'll see how I deal with you bunch of country bumpkins!"

The loud smashing sounds and vicious curses echoed through the ward.

On the adjacent bed number two, Wang Guowei, who was still in a semi-conscious state, was startled by the noise and shuddered violently.

His head was wrapped up like a mummy, half of his face was swollen, and there wasn't a single patch of good skin on his body.

Startled by the sudden loud noise, Wang Guowei jerked violently on the hospital bed like a dead dog whose tail had been stepped on, aggravating his numerous wounds and causing him to gasp in pain.

"Who is it! What's with all this gloom? Can't you see there's a seriously injured patient lying here?!"

He muttered curses as he laboriously turned his head, which was wrapped in thick bandages, and looked toward the bed next to him, following the sound of the smashed teacup.

Upon seeing the figure lying on bed number one, Wang Guowei's curses abruptly ceased.

His slit-like eyes widened instantly, and his originally resentful face was forced into a fawning expression, even ignoring the wounds on his face.

"Oh! Team Leader Gao?"

Wang Guowei struggled to sit up, but as soon as he exerted force, his bones felt like they were about to fall apart, and he hissed and gasped for breath in pain.

He could only slump back onto his pillow like a lump of mud, staring in astonishment at Gao Wenbin's leg in a cast and his chest wrapped in bandages.

"You...you've come in too?"

Gao Wenbin already felt that he had nowhere to vent his anger, and when he turned his head and saw that the person lying next to him was actually that idiot Wang Guowei, the nameless fire in his heart that had been suppressed suddenly flared up again.

"How did I get in?"

Gao Wenbin gritted his teeth and sneered, his left hand gripping the edge of the bed tightly, his chest heaving with anger: "If it weren't for you, a good-for-nothing who's good for nothing but causing trouble, making a fool of yourself naked in the factory in broad daylight and causing such a mess, would I have bothered cleaning up your mess?"

Upon hearing this, Wang Guowei, who had been all smiles and trying to please him, immediately became displeased.

He gasped in pain, his eyes swollen shut and filled with resentment. He complained in a lisping voice, "Team Leader Gao, that's not fair! Wasn't it you who ordered us to find a pretext to drive those guys under Zhao Shanhe out of the Red Star Factory?"

Wang Guowei felt increasingly aggrieved as he spoke. He shifted his body, which aggravated the bruises on his back, causing him to wince in pain.

"You told me to sow discord among those peasants, to deliberately cause trouble. I did exactly as you instructed, but who knew those country bumpkins would be so ruthless and dare to resort to dirty tricks!"

He struggled to raise his uninjured left hand, pointed to his head which was wrapped up like a mummy, and said in a voice trembling with tears, "Look at me, I'm covered in wounds, I'm much worse off than you! I only ended up like this because I was scouting for you and doing errands for you!"

Hearing his absurd and blaming words, Gao Wenbin was so angry that his vision blurred.

His broken ribs felt like they had been kicked hard again, and he was in so much pain that he broke out in a cold sweat.

"Bullshit!"

Gao Wenbin cursed and grabbed an empty medicine box from beside the pillow with his left hand, smashing it against Wang Guowei's hospital bed: "I sent you to cause trouble, I sent you to establish your authority! When did I ever tell you to go around acting like a hooligan with your bare butt exposed? You couldn't control yourselves and angered everyone, and now you dare to try and pin this on me!"

Wang Guowei was so yelled at that he curled up into a ball and didn't dare to utter another word.

He was a spineless bully who relied on his power, and now, seeing Gao Wenbin's murderous face, he could only swallow his saliva and keep all his grievances to himself.

"Yes, yes, Team Leader Gao is right. I was foolish and thoughtless."

Wang Guowei moved his neck with difficulty, a glint of malice flashing in his eyes, which were swollen to slits. He forced a fawning smile and said, "But are we just going to take a beating like this for nothing? That bastard Zhao Shanhe was so ruthless. If we swallow this insult, who in the Hongxing Factory will listen to us anymore?"

"Swallow it?"

Gao Wenbin snorted coldly, the sharp pain in his chest making him gasp.

He stared at the moldy water stains on the ceiling, a cruel sneer creeping onto his lips, his voice as if it had been soaked in ice water: "Does he really think he can control everything in the Red Star Factory just because he knows a little bit of martial arts? He's just a fool with no ability to make a living, a complete idiot."

Gao Wenbin slowly loosened his grip on the bed sheet, a sinister glint in his eyes.

"I've already sent someone to inform Deputy Secretary Chen of the Municipal Party Committee overnight."

He turned his head and stared at the night outside the window as if looking at a dead man: "Secretary Chen is just worried about not finding a legitimate reason to deal with these peasants. Zhao Shanhe's gang fight this time, beating the head of the work group sent down by the municipal party committee in the street, is a deliberate attempt to sabotage production and incite the masses to cause trouble."

Gao Wenbin paused, his tone revealing an arrogant confidence: "With these accusations leveled against him, not only will Zhao Shanhe be in deep trouble, but even the Director Li behind him will be in serious trouble."

Wang Guowei felt a surge of warmth in his heart upon hearing this, and the pain in his body seemed to lessen somewhat.

"Team Leader Gao is brilliant!"

He was so excited that he aggravated the wound on his lip, wincing in pain, but he still kept flattering her: "When the time comes, Secretary Chen will just issue a decree, and the police will arrest all those bumpkins and shoot them! Once they're in there, won't the Red Star Factory be under your control?"

Gao Wenbin closed his eyes, concealing the ruthlessness in them, and coldly uttered a sentence.

"Let him run wild for a couple of days. When the city's lightning strikes, I'm going to the detention center myself and smear his face with the sole of my shoe..."

Just as the two men were lying in the hospital bed, immersed in their dream of trampling Zhao Shanhe under their feet, the half-closed wooden door of the ward creaked open.

Nurse Liu Mei pushed in a flatbed cart with wheels.

A person lay stiffly on the flatbed, wrapped tightly in thick white gauze, looking like a newly unearthed mummy. Only his mouth and nose were visible, and he was breathing weakly. He also had a strong smell of blood on his body.

Gao Wenbin's pleasant mood was interrupted, and sparks flew from his eyes.

He glanced at the clueless new patient, frowned in disgust, and slammed his left hand against the metal bed frame, making a loud noise.

"What are you doing? What are you doing?!"

Gao Wenbin yelled at the top of his lungs, unleashing the same bureaucratic air he usually displayed at the factory: "I was personally sent down by the municipal party committee, I'm the factory director of Hongxing Machinery Factory! It's one thing that your hospital won't give me a private single room, but why are you cramming all sorts of random people into my room! Get them out of here right now, I need absolute quiet!"

Liu Mei, who was looking down and locking the flatbed wheel, paused.

She straightened up, turned around, and coldly glanced at Gao Wenbin, who was lying on the hospital bed in a fit of impotent rage, slapping the medical record folder in her hand.

"What's all the shouting about! It's so late, don't the other patients need to rest?"

Liu Mei, her face stern and her eyes filled with undisguised disdain, retorted sharply, "You keep talking about being the factory director. As a state cadre, shouldn't you have a higher level of awareness? Asking you to share with other patients was simply a last resort!"

Gao Wenbin was so taken aback by this blunt remark that his eyes widened and his chest heaved violently. He was about to lash out when Liu Mei's rapid-fire words forcefully suppressed his anger.

"Recently, there have been several major cases in the city, and the emergency room has been rushing people in overnight."

As Liu Mei deftly moved the seriously injured patient from the gurney to bed number three, she coldly reprimanded, "All the departments are already full, there are no extra wards at all! I've searched the entire building, and this is the only room that still has space."

She hung up the IV drip, turned around and walked to the door. Without even glancing at Gao Wenbin, whose face was ashen on the hospital bed, she delivered the final, devastating blow.

"You'd better drop your bureaucratic airs. Our First Municipal Hospital isn't under the jurisdiction of your Red Star Machinery Factory! We're admitting this one today, and another one will be admitted later. If you're not happy, go complain to our director tomorrow morning!"

After saying that, Liu Mei slammed the wooden door shut, leaving Gao Wenbin with only a clean and neat back view.

With a muffled thud, the wooden door slammed against the frame, causing plaster to flake off the walls.

Gao Wenbin stared intently at the closed door, his face turning ashen.

As a close associate of the deputy secretary of the municipal party committee, he was treated like a deity wherever he went.

Now he's being scolded by a junior nurse for being unenlightened, and she even tries to intimidate him with her "cadre style" attitude.

This pent-up anger, mixed with shame and indignation, surged straight to the top of my head.

Gao Wenbin suddenly opened his mouth, wanting to curse, but as soon as he took a deep breath, the broken ribs in his chest cavity pierced into his flesh as his muscles pulled.

"ah--"
