Dazhuang rushed down the stairs to the first-floor outpatient hall in one breath.

It was still early, and there weren't many people queuing to register in the lobby.

The wooden table in the corner, which was usually used for making public phone calls, was deserted. The old man who usually collected the fees was probably out in the backyard to use the restroom.

He strode over, casually pulled out two dimes and pressed them under the glass plate on the table, then grabbed the peeling green rotary phone.

He unfolded the slip of paper, turned it over, stared at the string of numbers on it, and his thick fingers spun rapidly on the dial pad.

The phone was answered after only two rings.

The phone rang only once before it was abruptly answered.

Before Dazhuang could speak, Ivanov's urgent voice came through the receiver: "Zhao? Is that you? You're back? Are you alright?"

Da Zhuang froze for a moment, his heart clenched, and he quickly covered the microphone and lowered his voice: "It's me, Da Zhuang. Brother Shanhe asked me to find you."

There was a noticeable pause on the other end of the line, and Ivanov's voice instantly turned somber: "Dazhuang? Zhao's brother? He left this number with you? Where's Zhao? Hasn't he returned yet?"

"no."

Da Zhuang gripped the microphone tightly, the veins on the back of his hand bulging. "Brother Shanhe left me a note before he left, saying that if he wasn't back by the time I handed over my shift at dawn, I should call this number and ask you if Director Li of the Emergency Department at the City Hospital actually has a nephew named Li Qiang?"

There wasn't even a second's hesitation on the other end of the phone.

"no."

Ivanov's answer was crisp and clear: "I had my men figure him out as soon as he made the call last night. Director Li's family has only had one son for three generations, no sisters at all, so where would he get a nephew? And in all his social connections, there is absolutely no one named Li Qiang."

With a loud bang.

Da Zhuang felt all the blood rush to his head, and his heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to burst out of his chest.

Li Qiang is a fake.

The seriously injured patient who was brought in last night with his hands bitten and his fingers broken was obviously a fake.

Snapped!

Da Zhuang didn't say another word and slammed the receiver back onto the landline.

He slowly turned around, raised his head, and stared intently at the stairwell leading to the inpatient department with his bloodshot eyes.

Meanwhile, the corridors of the emergency room were getting more and more crowded.

Old Hei and Monkey, along with a few others, were already impatient and were whispering something to Liang Tiejun.

Out of the corner of his eye, Liang Tiejun saw the young nurse quickly walking back along the wall.

He immediately raised his hand and gestured to Lao Hei and the others to press down, indicating that they should stay where they were and not move.

Then, he walked straight toward the nurse, using his broad back to block the view of Lao Hei and the others.

The nurse's face was still a little pale. She glanced around, then leaned close to Liang Tiejun and whispered, "Director Liang, I've checked, but... something's not right."

Liang Tiejun remained expressionless, bowing slightly: "What's wrong?"

"Last night, in the latter half of the night, the emergency room received two seriously injured patients."

The young nurse swallowed hard, nervously clutching her white coat. "Moreover, the on-duty doctor's notes were very vague, mostly describing external injuries without mentioning the specific details of the hand injury. Just looking at the notes, it's impossible to tell which finger was severed."

Liang Tiejun's eyes darkened slightly: "Where are they all?"

"One was in the 308 special care room on the right-hand side of the third floor of the inpatient department. The other... was directly sent to the cadre ward in the back building."

The nurse paused, then added, "The record says that both of these seriously injured patients have family members with them in the ward. I've said everything I need to say, please don't implicate me."

"Understood. Keep today's events to yourself," Liang Tiejun instructed in a deep voice.

The young nurse breathed a sigh of relief and, not daring to linger for even a second, turned and quickly disappeared into the crowd.

The nurse had barely left when Dazhuang strode over from the stairwell.

His face was as taut as a block of iron, his eyes gleamed with a terrifying ferocity, and his entire body radiated an aura of menace that was impossible to suppress.

Upon reaching him, Dazhuang didn't say a word, but simply stared at Liang Tiejun and shook his head with extreme heaviness.

Liang Tiejun's heart skipped a beat.

Director Li has no nephew at all; Li Qiang is a fake.

Dazhuang, panting heavily, pressed on, his body tense, "How is it? Did the nurses find anything? Where is he?"

Liang Tiejun took a deep breath and briefly explained the situation: "Last night, two seriously injured patients were brought to the emergency room in the middle of the night. The records were vague, and it was impossible to tell which one had the severed finger. One of them is currently in the 308 special care room on the third floor, and the other was directly sent to the cadre ward in the back building."

Upon hearing this, Da Zhuang sat up abruptly and said in a low, urgent voice, "Then what are we waiting for! We have so many men under us. You take a few, I'll take a few, and we'll split up and sneak over. Let Lao Hei and Monkey follow you. As soon as we spot Lao Ba, we'll take him down on the spot!"

"Control? What do you think a VIP ward is?"

Liang Tiejun interrupted him coldly and rudely, his voice extremely low, "That place is where retired senior leaders and high-ranking officials from the city live. There are security guards on duty 24 hours a day at the entrance of the building. Don't even mention you leading a group of people to force your way in. Even when I, Liang Tiejun, was the director of Hongxing Machinery Factory, I had to use the pretext of visiting city leaders to get through that door openly."

Da Zhuang's chest heaved violently as he gritted his teeth: "We can't get in? What do we do? We can't just sit here and wait!"

Liang Tiejun did not respond immediately. His deep old eyes narrowed slightly as he quickly assessed the situation.

After a moment, his eyes sharpened, and he made a decision in a low voice: "Let's go to the third floor and check room 308 first. If it's Old Scar, that would be best. We'll keep a close watch on him outside the door and wait for Shanhe's news."

Liang Tiejun clenched his fist in his pocket, his eyes extremely deep: "If the one in room 308 on the third floor isn't him, then we'll have to call Director Li and ask him to go to the cadre ward himself to see if he's the person we're looking for."
