The door to ward 308 was pushed open.
A lingering smell of blood, urine, and Lysol, mixed with the stuffy air from the ward that had been there all night, wafted out.
"Secretary Chen... I had another idea just now..."
On the hospital bed, Gao Wenbin thought it was Chen Jianguo returning, and while speaking urgently, he struggled to sit up from the bed.
But when he saw that the person who pushed the door open was Liang Tiejun, his movements suddenly froze.
The fawning and eagerness in his eyes vanished almost instantly upon seeing Liang Tiejun, replaced by a chilling frost.
Gao Wenbin then slumped back onto the pillow.
His chest was wrapped in thick bandages, his face was pale from blood loss, and his voice was weak but chillingly cold.
"Director Liang."
"Director Liang, you really have a lot of free time. You just came out of quarantine and haven't even had a chance to sit down at home, and you've already come looking for me this early in the morning."
Liang Tiejun seemed oblivious to the barb in his words and slowly walked into the ward.
His gaze swept around the ward with complete naturalness, and then, at that moment, his heart sank to the bottom.
This is a three-person hospital room.
Gao Wenbin and Wang Guowei were lying by the window and in the middle, respectively.
The area closest to the door, where bed number three should have been, was now completely empty; the bed itself was nowhere to be seen!
The oxygen port on the wall was left open all alone. On the terrazzo floor, there were not only a few drops of dark red blood that had not completely dried, but also a row of very clear tire tracks from a medical trolley that had been run over by a heavy object not long ago.
Could the vagrant who was forcibly taken into the office by Director Li just now be the person in bed number three?
Liang Tiejun dared not draw a conclusion.
He suppressed the intense tremor in his heart, forcing all his plans to remain hidden deep within his mind, his face revealing only the weariness and predicament befitting an old factory director.
"Team Leader Gao, you've gone too far with your words."
Liang Tiejun sighed and stopped a short distance from the hospital bed, not daring to approach any closer.
"I heard that you had a conflict with some colleagues at the factory and were even injured. I was really worried about you, so I came up to check on you."
"Although I've retired now, Hongxing Factory is still the place where I've worked for half my life."
"You're a cadre sent down from the city, and the incident happened at the factory. It wouldn't be right for me, the old factory director, not to even come and take a look."
Gao Wenbin stared at him coldly.
"Director Liang makes it sound nice. At the Hongxing Machinery Factory, who doesn't know you're in cahoots with those peasants from Kaoshantun?"
"I just had my ribs broken by Zhao Shanhe at the Hongxing factory. Are you here to see me now to play peacemaker, or to sound out my intentions on Zhao Shanhe's behalf?"
At this point, Gao Wenbin suddenly let out an extremely sinister laugh.
"I'm telling you, Liang Tiejun, Zhao Shanhe is finished. I said it!"
"Publicly assaulting a leader, disrupting production order, and gathering a crowd to cause trouble! Just for these few offenses, he and his gang of vagrants from Kaoshantun should all be in jail! I've already reported this to Secretary Chen; the city will absolutely not allow such blatant defiance of leading cadres!"
He stared intently at Liang Tiejun's aged face.
"Liang Tiejun, you were just released from there too. Being isolated and interrogated non-stop must have been tough, right?"
Gao Wenbin's lips curled into a cruel smile, his voice low and piercing.
"I heard your old colleague Zhang Dafa is still not out, right? I heard he was skinned alive in there and can't even speak properly anymore. You, on the other hand, cleaned your hands, cleared your name, and came out unscathed."
"Since you've been lucky enough to escape with your life, you should cherish it. Don't get involved with Zhao Shanhe and his gang anymore. Otherwise, you might end up in jail again someday, and I'm afraid your old bones won't be able to take it; you might not come out alive!"
Hearing Gao Wenbin so bluntly use Zhang Dafa's life to stab him in the back, Liang Tiejun's heart clenched violently out of control.
The humiliation of being blindfolded by bright lights in the interrogation room for days and nights, and the horrific sight of Old Zhang being beaten beyond recognition when I left, were real pains etched into my bones.
Liang Tiejun's eye twitched almost imperceptibly, and his chest felt like it was stuffed with a wad of tattered cotton soaked in ice water, making it suffocate and painful.
But he just gritted his teeth and held on, then slowly forced himself to loosen his grip.
He swallowed his anger, which was tinged with blood.
Wang Guowei, sitting next to the second bed, also looked up.
His face was swollen beyond recognition, one eye was reduced to a slit, the skin and flesh were turned inside out in a mix of blue and purple, and a cold laugh squeezed out of his leaky mouth as he took over the conversation.
"Director Gao's words hit the nail on the head."
Wang Guowei squinted at Liang Tiejun's empty hands, curled his lip, and spoke with an air of utter arrogance.
"Hey Director Liang, you came here under the guise of visiting a patient, shouldn't you at least show some basic courtesy? Bring some fruit, or at least a couple of bags of malted milk powder? But you came empty-handed and started making a big show of it? Do you think we're beggars?"
Upon hearing Wang Guowei's ridicule, Liang Tiejun forced a strained, awkward smile onto his aged face.
He slowly loosened his tightly clenched fist, rubbing his rough palms together like a helpless old countryman.
"Guowei, you've made a fool of yourselves."
Liang Tiejun sighed, his tone revealing a sense of humility and helplessness, his back seemingly even more hunched than before.
"I just came out of the interrogation room. You all know our family situation. We haven't been paid at the factory for several months, and my eldest son is studying at university in the provincial capital. He's at the age where he has to ask for living expenses every day. Your aunt also fell ill recently due to stress and has been taking medicine all the time. Our family's already meager savings have been completely depleted."
Liang Tiejun shook his head with a wry smile and patted the pocket of his faded Zhongshan suit.
"I'm penniless, I really don't have any spare money. I can't even scrape together enough to buy a bag of broken apples, so I had to swallow my pride and come empty-handed. Please bear with me."
Hearing Liang Tiejun's extremely humble words, Gao Wenbin, lying on the hospital bed, watched coldly without saying a word.
But Wang Guowei, standing next to him, seemed to have heard the biggest joke in the world, and let out an extremely grating, strange laugh from his slurred mouth.
He struggled to lift his hand, which wasn't in a cast, and slammed it against the edge of the bed.
"Liang Tiejun, oh Liang Tiejun, I never thought you'd end up like this!"
Wang Guowei squinted at the old factory director in front of him, whose eyes were swollen shut and barely visible. His tone was full of the arrogance of a petty person who had gained power and the pleasure of revenge.
"That interrogation really broke your facade of humility! Now you finally understand the hardship of being penniless like us ordinary workers, don't you?"
He spat a mouthful of bloody saliva heavily on the ground, and arrogantly raised his chin towards the door.
"Since you're penniless and have no money to buy anything, yet you keep saying you're here to visit and help in the sick, then that's perfect!"
Wang Guowei pointed to the empty bed number three near the door and ordered Liang Tiejun around like he was ordering a dog around.
"A half-dead stray dog was just taken out of this room, and it left blood and urine everywhere. The nurses haven't had time to clean it up yet."
Since you, Liang Tiejun, are penniless and can't afford any gifts, that's fine too. Just turn left and you'll find the water room. Please, Director Liang, go and get a mop yourself and clean up this blood on the floor properly. That will be enough for you!"
Gao Wenbin leaned against the headboard, a cold smile playing on his lips, deliberately not stopping Wang Guowei's overstepping of boundaries and audacity.
He was just waiting to see how low Liang Tiejun, this old man, would stoop to today.
When Liang Tiejun, who was standing still, heard the words "we just got rid of a half-dead stray dog," his heart skipped a beat.
You guessed right.
The homeless person I just saw outside came out of this ward.
Seeing him standing there like a clay sculpture, Wang Guowei assumed that he was just trying to save face for the old factory director, and a piercing sneer suddenly came from his slurred mouth.
"What's wrong, Director Liang?"
Wang Guowei, with his swollen eye squinting, continued to relentlessly crush Liang Tiejun's last shred of dignity, "Didn't you just say you were visiting a patient and wanted to help? What, now you're being asked to mop the floor for Director Gao, and you think that's beneath you?"
Gao Wenbin leaned against the headboard, a cold smile playing on his lips, his gaze sweeping over Liang Tiejun's face like a poisoned knife.
The air in the ward was so thick it was suffocating.
A few seconds later, Liang Tiejun clenched his teeth and swallowed back the taste of blood that rose in his throat.
A forced, extremely humble, sneer appeared on his aged, stiff face.
"I'm not aggrieved, what's there to be aggrieved about? The smell in the ward is indeed strong."
"Team Leader Gao is injured; it's not good for him to smell this."
He was like an old dog whose spine had been completely drained, hunched over, waving his hands repeatedly.
"I knew it... why did I smell such a strong fishy stench as soon as I walked in?"
Liang Tiejun chuckled dryly as he obediently lowered his head, not daring to look at the two people on the hospital bed again, and turned to walk towards the door.
"You guys rest well, I'll go to the washroom to get the mop."
