Xiakanzi Village is only five li away from Kaoshantun.
Erga Zi, with one hand in his pocket, head held high and chest out, strode forward, while Wang the Matchmaker jogged alongside to lead the way, occasionally reminding him of the etiquette for their upcoming meeting.
When they arrived at the gate of Liu the carpenter's house, Erga pushed up his sunglasses, cleared his throat, and strutted into the gate like a high-ranking city official on an inspection tour.
Liu the carpenter's yard was piled high with wood shavings and lumber, and a fresh, clean scent of pine filled the air.
As soon as the curtain to the main room was lifted, Liu the carpenter and his wife were already waiting.
But when Wang the matchmaker stepped aside and revealed Ergazi following behind, the old couple's smiles instantly froze, and they were completely stunned.
Erga Zi sported a slicked-back, reflective hairstyle, wore a loose-fitting white short-sleeved shirt despite the early spring weather, and sported a pair of large, dark sunglasses perched on his nose. He walked with an arrogant, pigeon-toed gait, his chin held high and his nostrils practically pointing to the sky.
This doesn't look like a young man on a proper blind date at all! He looks exactly like a spy invading a village in a commune movie, or one of those idle hooligans on the street!
The tobacco pipe in Liu the carpenter's hand stopped in mid-air, his mouth half-open, unable to close it for a long time.
Aunt Liu was so frightened that she took half a step back, tugged at Liu the carpenter's sleeve, and muttered in a low voice:
"Dad... what kind of person did this matchmaker bring? Wearing dark glasses in broad daylight, with slicked-back hair, he looks just like one of those traitorous translators in those open-air movies!"
Carpenter Liu then seemed to realize he was dreaming.
Looking at Erga's smug appearance, his heart skipped a beat. He thought to himself that this was no different from the lackeys in the movies who led the Japanese to the countryside!
But then he remembered how much the matchmaker had raved about him yesterday, and the wad of cash the young man had, so Liu the carpenter had no choice but to force down his astonishment and force a dry, twitching laugh.
"Oh...oh dear! Old Wang, you've finally brought Ga Zi! Come on in, come on in, there's some hot tea inside!"
Ergazi didn't notice the old couple's disheveled appearance at all; he thought his outfit had intimidated them on the spot.
He snorted coldly, chose a seat in the main hall, sat down imposingly, stretched out his long legs, raised his chin high, and sighed dramatically.
"Uncle Liu, I only managed to squeeze in a visit today to give Aunt Wang some face. Lately, I've been working myself to the bone at the factory with Brother Shanhe, seeing city leaders and big bosses every day, my time is really tight!"
The carpenter and his wife looked at each other, unsure whether to hand over the large, rough porcelain bowl or put it down.
Wang, the matchmaker, was watching closely from all sides. Seeing that the situation was about to turn sour, she immediately slapped her thigh, exclaimed "Ouch!", and, waving her flowery handkerchief, twisted her waist and stepped into the middle.
"Old Liu, Sister-in-law Liu, you two are dumbfounded!"
As Wang the matchmaker took the teacup and handed it to Erga, she frantically winked and made faces at Liu the carpenter and his wife, trying to smooth things over in a loud voice:
"I told you, young people these days are different from us back then! You guys are stuck in the village doing carpentry all day, how would you know anything about the outside world? Gazi's outfit is the most fashionable Hong Kong style right now in Guangzhou and Shanghai! Those big black sunglasses and that polyester shirt, that's the air of a big boss! Ordinary people can't even find a way to buy that!"
As she spoke, Matchmaker Wang quietly moved to Liu the carpenter's side, tugged hard at his sleeve, gritted her teeth, lowered her voice, and gave him a meaningful look:
"Old Liu, don't be fooled! You can't judge a book by its cover! This guy's a real money-maker, he's got tons of cash in his pocket! Quickly, call Cui'er out here!"
Turning her head, Wang the matchmaker immediately put on a fawning smile, her face full of wrinkles, and flattered Ergaizi repeatedly:
"Gazi, your auntie knew you were a busy man! Uncle Liu and Aunt Liu heard about your skills yesterday and have long considered you a very promising young man. Quickly drink some hot tea to soothe your throat. Liu Jiacui'er is the most skillful girl in our Xiakanzi Village; she'll come out and pour you some water right away!"
Erga Zi felt incredibly comfortable after being flattered by Wang the Matchmaker, and his ego swelled even higher. He crossed his legs, pretended to blow on his teacup, and raised his chin even higher.
The carpenter and his wife were completely awakened by Wang the matchmaker's words, "a true god of wealth with a pocket full of ten-yuan bills," and the awkwardness they felt from being shocked vanished into thin air.
As long as you have real money in your pocket, you can be a big shot even if you're wearing sunglasses or carrying a broken iron pot!
Carpenter Liu quickly rubbed his hands on his apron, straightened his back, and deliberately adopted a fatherly demeanor in front of Ergaizi, then shouted at the top of his lungs into the inner room:
"Cui'er! Cui'er! Brother Ga Zi from Kaoshantun is here! Quickly bring out your freshly roasted peanuts! And brew Brother Ga Zi a bowl of fresh tea!"
After shouting, Liu the carpenter turned around, beaming, and boasted to Ergaizi:
"Gazi, not to brag, but my Cui'er is the most sensible girl in the surrounding villages! She's incredibly skillful; she excels at everything from sewing shoe soles and making clothes to managing household chores. Even the head cook in the commune praises her cooking! People come to propose marriage so often they practically wear down our doorstep, but your aunt and I haven't said a word to any of them. We just want to find her a capable and strong man like you!"
Erga sat on the bench, a cold laugh escaping his nostrils.
Blow! Keep blowing!
When they were broke, they treated me like a peasant. Now that they see I'm making money with Brother Shanhe, they're praising their daughter like she's some kind of fairy descended from heaven!
When this country girl comes out later, I'll nitpick and make your whole family lose face on the spot!
Erga Zi had everything planned out in his mind. With a cold smile on his lips, he deliberately leaned back and stared intently at the blue floral curtain with his sunglasses, waiting for the person to come out so he could start firing.
Just then, the curtain to the inner room was suddenly lifted.
"Don't rush me, I'm coming right now."
Accompanied by a clear, melodious voice like a mountain stream, a young woman carrying a large, rough porcelain plate strode out with light, quick steps.
Ergaizi, who had been looking down on the girl with his nose in the air and squinting, was about to find fault with her from head to toe. But when the girl stood in the light, Ergaizi's eyes, which were hidden behind his sunglasses, widened instantly, and he almost slipped off the bench.
The person who came was Liu Cuier, the daughter of carpenter Liu.
The girl was about nineteen or twenty years old, with a fair and neat oval face, and a pair of bright almond-shaped eyes under her willow-leaf eyebrows.
Two thick, jet-black braids hung down her chest, with two red ribbons tied to the ends.
She was wearing a neatly starched floral blouse with a diagonal placket. Although it had faded a bit from washing, her figure was perfectly proportioned and graceful, and she exuded the vitality and freshness unique to mountain girls.
How could this be a dusty, sallow-faced country girl?
Erga Zi's Adam's apple bobbed violently, and he swallowed hard with a "gulp." His legs, which had been crossed high, were unconsciously lowered, and his hand holding the teacup froze in mid-air. All the sarcastic remarks he had prepared in his mind vanished instantly.
