Heading west from the gate, there was a wide and long dirt road. The north wind howled across the empty fields, and apart from two deep ruts made by heavy carts, there wasn't a soul in sight on the frozen road.
Sun Changyou was half-carried and half-dragged by three people. With each step forward, dirty water gushed out from the wet mud beneath his feet.
The woolen overcoat he was wearing had long been stiffened by the cold wind into a sheet of cast iron, sticking to his skin with an icy chill, yet his forehead was covered in layers of cold sweat, washing away the mud on his face and leaving streaks of yellow liquid.
"Ouch... ouch, damn it..."
Sun Changyou tripped over a frozen clod of earth, his right arm jerking violently. It felt as if a red-hot iron shovel had been plunged into the crevice of his wrist, causing his entire body to tremble with pain, and he let out a bloodcurdling scream like a pig being slaughtered.
"Brother Sun! Be careful!"
The young man was so anxious that his voice cracked, and he and the driver held onto his arms tightly.
Under the pale midday sun, the driver glanced down at Sun Changyou's drooping right hand, and his eyelids twitched violently:
"Boss Sun, your hand... I'm afraid you really can't keep swinging it anymore! Your entire back of your hand and wrist are swollen like steamed buns, all blue and purple, the skin is stretched shiny! The bone is definitely dislocated, if you delay any longer, you won't even be able to hold chopsticks in the future!"
"Looking for...looking for a car! You bunch of dead people...are you blind?! Hurry up!"
Sun Changyou was in so much pain that his whole body was trembling, his lips were bluish-purple, and his eyes were bloodshot. He forced out these few angry curses through his teeth.
"Brother Sun, there's no village or shop in sight, where would we find a car?"
The young man was so anxious he was jumping up and down, craning his neck to look along the empty, frozen road. Apart from the dry yellow earth and rotten grass swirling in the northwest wind, he couldn't see a single living creature in either direction.
"Forget jeeps and trucks, we don't even have a damn tractor to haul manure!"
"A bunch of useless trash!"
Sun Changyou's face contorted with rage, and he forced out a string of vicious curses through clenched teeth:
"I spend a fortune supporting you all every month, and when it really matters, you're all ungrateful wretches who just freeload! If I really lose this hand, I'll make you all regret it! Now go find me a car!!"
The young man and the guy next to him shrank back in fright, their faces pale. They felt incredibly aggrieved but didn't dare utter a single word in rebuttal.
In the dead of midday, far from any village or shop, with hard ice shards on the ground, where did they suddenly conjure a car out of thin air?!
The young man was sweating profusely from the scolding. He stood on tiptoe and desperately looked towards the other side of the road, the cold wind making his tears stream down his face.
Suddenly, a swaying dark shadow slowly appeared at the corner of the earthen slope.
The young man's eyes lit up suddenly, as if he had grasped a lifeline, and he shouted with a mixture of surprise and joy in his hoarse voice:
"Got it! Brother Sun! A car's here! A car's really coming!!"
Sun Changyou was in so much pain that he was seeing stars, but when he suddenly heard this howl, he shuddered and was overjoyed!
"Quick! Help me over there!"
He felt as if he had grasped a lifeline, and even the excruciating pain in his wrist seemed to be suppressed somewhat.
On that chubby face covered in mud, a twisted, ecstatic, ugly smile was forced out:
"Heaven hasn't forsaken me! I knew my luck was on fire! No matter which organization is offering me a ride, I'll pay up! Whether it's ten or twenty yuan, or even two ten-yuan bills, I'll throw money at it today and make them turn around and take me to the county town!"
He's been doing business outside for the past few years, carrying a few silver dollars in his pocket, and he's long been used to using money to pave the way.
In his mind, the vehicles that could run on this main road were either tractors with sidecars used by the commune to haul goods, or large trucks with covers from the transportation department of some big factory, or at the very least, three-wheeled sidecars used by the supply and marketing cooperative to run business!
As long as you have a metal object with wheels, getting to the county hospital is just a matter of stepping on the gas and it takes half an hour!
With the driver's help, Sun Changyou limped and stumbled forward a couple of steps, craning his neck to peer around the bend in the earthen slope:
"Where is it?! Where's the car?!"
But upon seeing that, the ecstasy on Sun Changyou's face instantly froze.
At the bend in the earthen slope, there was no smell of pungent diesel smoke, nor the roar of a large truck engine.
Only a slow, muffled clatter of hooves drifted intermittently in the howling northwest wind.
"Da...da...da..."
Immediately afterwards, a lazy, drawn-out country shout drifted into everyone's ears on the wind:
"Giddy up!"
Under Sun Changyou's increasingly wide and bloodshot eyes, an old blue ox with gray fur and thin ribs that bulged out slowly poked its head out from behind the earthen slope.
The old ox, its tail covered in two clumps of dried cow dung, swayed idly as it chewed on half a piece of yellowed hay, swaying leisurely along the frozen dirt road.
Behind the ox, a dilapidated wooden cart was being pulled.
The wheels were wooden rings covered with cast iron, making a creaking, groaning sound as they rolled along the dirt road.
A layer of blackened, damp, rotten corn husks was haphazardly spread on the cart, with three or four tattered burlap sacks piled up in the middle, emitting a sour, rotten smell. At a glance, it was clear that they were full of rotten sweet potatoes meant for feeding pigs.
An old man with a tattered dog-skin hat and a face full of wrinkles like old tree bark sat cross-legged on the shaft of the cart.
The old man had a copper pipe dangling from his mouth, squinting at the sun, and a bare, thin willow twig in his hand. After a long while, he casually waved it across the cow's rump.
The oxcart moved so leisurely and slowly that it was barely faster than a toddler who had just learned to walk.
The road was eerily quiet, with only the sound of the old ox's hooves pausing every three steps and the pungent smell of dry tobacco.
Sun Changyou, who had just been beaming with joy, stood frozen under the big willow tree with his mouth agape. His expression was more dramatic than if he had swallowed two pounds of flies in broad daylight.
The veins on his neck throbbed violently, his eyes twitched intensely, and the hope that had just risen in his chest was smashed to pieces by a blow to the head, making him so angry that he almost spat out a mouthful of blood on the spot.
He abruptly turned his head, his bloodshot eyes glaring at the young man beside him, as if he wanted to tear this blind fool apart on the spot:
"You fucking call a taxi for this piece of junk?!"
