Chapter 11 Chen Dongquan
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Su Bai went to his work in high spirits.
Upon arriving at the Zhenfusi Yamen, he noticed that the atmosphere was different from usual.
Many constables had already arrived in the courtyard, gathered in twos and threes, talking in hushed tones. The people were much more organized than usual.
"Brother Su!"
Sun Hou, with his sharp eyes, spotted Su Bai stepping across the threshold and quickly waved, a familiar smile plastered on his face.
Su Bai quickly walked over and asked in a low voice, "Brother Sun, what's going on today? Has something big happened?"
His gaze swept over the somewhat noisy scene in the courtyard.
"Brother Su, you really don't know?"
Sun Hou raised one eyebrow, grinned, revealing a meaningful smile, and gently nudged Su Bai's arm with his elbow.
"What's the big deal?" Su Bai's curiosity was piqued.
Sun Hou didn't hide anything, leaning closer and lowering his voice to say:
"Our Zhenfu Division is getting a new temporary constable today."
He paused, looking at Su Bai's puzzled expression, before continuing:
"This is quite different from when you, Brother Su, first came to report for duty, when even the official officials above you didn't show their faces. This person... has quite an unusual background."
It turned out that the new temporary constable was named Chen Dongquan, and he was the second son of their constable Chen.
This young master, like Su Bai, is said to have no talent in martial arts since childhood.
Sure enough, as soon as he came of age, his father personally arranged for him to come in for training.
This is completely different from Su Bai's situation, where he had to wait for his father to pass away before he could take over the position.
As Sun Hou spoke, he lowered his voice even further:
"I've heard that Chief Constable Chen is the most capable among us constables, and he has a very good chance of becoming the chief constable in the future."
He smacked his lips.
"The son of such a person—which of the brothers in the yamen isn't eager to get acquainted with him?"
"You say," Sun Hou said, shaking his head as if talking to himself.
"Why did Officer Chen have to put his second son in this temporary constable's line of work of all places?"
Old Wang, who had been listening with his arms crossed, slowly interjected, his eyelids half-drooping:
"Who knows? Maybe... he has connections, and he might be able to become a regular constable in a while."
Su Bai was taken aback, somewhat disbelieving:
"Really? Old Wang. The rules for official constables clearly state that they must have a cultivation level of the first stage of martial arts, the Skin Refining stage."
Old Wang then raised his eyelids, glanced at Su Bai, and slowly shook his head, giving him an expression that said, "You're still too young."
"You don't understand. Rules are sometimes meant to be broken."
Just then, a middle-aged man, who looked to be around forty years old, strolled over with his hands behind his back. He had a serious expression and was dressed in police uniform.
Su Bai looked over but had no recollection of the person; it was probably some leader he rarely encountered.
Sun Hou and Lao Wang immediately changed their expressions, quickly putting on ingratiating smiles and unconsciously straightening their backs.
"Brother Su," Sun Hou hurriedly tugged at Su Bai's sleeve and introduced, "This is Constable Li, our leader."
Su Bai composed himself and respectfully cupped his hands, saying, "Greetings, Officer Li."
Li Chatou's gaze lingered on Su Bai's face for a moment, then he nodded slightly in agreement, without saying anything more.
The group chatted intermittently for a few more minutes, but the atmosphere was not as relaxed as before.
As the sun rose higher, more and more people gathered in the courtyard, and a restless anticipation permeated the noise.
Suddenly, there was a slight commotion from the direction of the door.
Chen Cha Tou walked in first; he was tall and strong, with a steady gait and an imposing presence on his square face.
Beside him was a boy of about seventeen or eighteen years old, whose features bore a resemblance to Chen Chatou. He raised his chin slightly and looked at everyone with an undisguised arrogance.
Half a step behind Chen, Wang and Li also entered the courtyard one after another.
This display of force caused many veteran constables to exchange glances.
It seems the rumors were true; Chief Chen's momentum has indeed surpassed that of the other two.
Otherwise, why would they need to personally accompany him on such a trivial matter as settling his nephews and nieces?
As soon as the taxi drivers stopped, the courtyard fell silent, with only a few soft coughs remaining.
Today's routine morning training was initiated by Chief Chen himself.
The content is nothing more than platitudes about being diligent and dutiful, which are so tiresome that they're sick of hearing them.
Su Bai thought to himself, it seems that the first thing one must learn to do when becoming an official is to say the same nonsense in different ways.
This lecture lasted for about fifteen minutes.
Suddenly, Officer Chen changed the subject, a slight smile appearing on his face. He patted the young man beside him on the shoulder, his voice becoming louder:
"Brothers, today our Garrison Command has a new member, Chen Dongquan. From now on, I hope you will all take good care of him and give him guidance." He turned his head, his tone casual but unquestionable, "Go, Dongquan, introduce yourself to your colleagues."
Chen Dongquan showed no stage fright whatsoever. Instead, he stepped forward, puffed out his chest even more, and swept his gaze over the crowd below, exuding a natural sense of superiority as he loudly proclaimed:
"Dear colleagues, I am very happy to work with you all from now on. My name is Chen Dongquan. I am new here and there are many things I don't know. Please take care of me!"
"Welcome, welcome!"
"Brother Chen, you're too kind!"
The constables below the stage immediately joined in the cheers, their faces beaming with smiles as they offered their welcome, creating a lively atmosphere.
Chen Chatou's face showed a satisfied expression, and he nodded slightly:
"Very good. Everyone has worked hard today, so let's all disperse now and get back to what we're doing."
The crowd responded enthusiastically, and then dispersed in small groups to begin their daily street patrol duties.
The leader of Su Bai's team had disappeared again.
Su Bai, Sun Hou, and Lao Wang were assigned to patrol Stone Lane today.
This area is a working-class neighborhood, with low, haphazardly built houses and narrow alleyways.
Most of the daily affairs are trivial matters, and major cases rarely occur.
The three walked slowly along the uneven alleyway, and for a while no one spoke, only the sound of their footsteps echoing in the quiet alley.
The sunlight was cut into narrow strips by the eaves on both sides, casting shadows on the mottled walls.
Suddenly, Sun Hou let out a heavy sigh, breaking the silence:
"Sigh—it's really a skill to be born into the right family. If you're lucky, then you're different."
He kicked away a small pebble at his feet, his tone full of bitterness and resentment.
Even Old Wang, who was usually taciturn, let out a long sigh, and the wrinkles on his face seemed to deepen.
"What can we do? Didn't you see? When the crew parted ways just now, the driver didn't mention at all which team he would be assigned to or which street he would patrol. I bet he won't even be patrolling any streets."
"Ha," Sun Hou chuckled self-deprecatingly.
"If they can even show up every day, that's considered a favor. What do we do? We run around in all kinds of weather, our legs are worn out, and our mouths are hoarse."
Upon hearing this, Old Wang nodded silently, his cloudy eyes gazing ahead.
"I reckon that in a few months, this guy will probably make a great contribution and rise to a high position in glory."
Listening to the two of them exchanging barbs, Su Bai shook his head and whispered a word of advice:
"Alright, Brother Sun, Old Wang, let's cut to the chase. Walls have ears, and if it gets over to the wrong people, it could cause trouble for nothing."
Sun Hou pursed his lips, but his voice still lowered:
"Alright, alright, do you think your brother Sun doesn't understand this?"
He straightened his not-so-sturdy chest, as if to encourage himself.
"Just you wait and see! Once I become a full-fledged police officer, I'll work hard and become one too! Then I'll still be living a glamorous life!"
Although he spoke with great conviction, he then fell silent and said no more.
It was another day of routine street patrol for the three of them.
