The Zhenfu Division has only one floor of office space, but it occupies a very large area. Its flying eaves and brackets show a solemn outline in the night.

In the deepest part of the building, apart from the Chief Constable who rarely appears more than twice a year, the duty rooms of the three constables are the most important.

Tonight, it should have been Chief Wang's turn to be on duty.

Su Bai stepped into the empty corridor and came to the tightly closed door of Wang Cha Tou's room, raising his hand to knock.

After a short while, there was complete silence inside.

He knocked harder and several more times, but still no one answered.

"Not here?"

Su Bai's heart sank slightly, and he turned around and quickly walked towards the duty rooms of the other two constables.

Both Officer Li's and Officer Chen's rooms were tightly shut, and no one answered when they knocked.

The other taxi rooms were also empty.

Left with no other choice, Su Bai had to continue searching for someone to take charge within the somewhat empty office.

As I passed through a moon gate, I bumped into the figure of a constable.

"Who are you?"

The man stopped, raised his lantern slightly, and the dim light illuminated a square face filled with doubt and scrutiny.

Su Bai immediately recognized him as Constable Chen, who was under the command of Constable Chen. Although he was not familiar with him, he knew that he was related to Constable Chen by some distance.

He suppressed his eagerness and bowed respectfully, saying, "Officer Chen, I am Su Bai, a temporary officer."

"Oh." Constable Chen nodded, his gaze sweeping over Su Bai, his tone indifferent. "What brings you here so late?"

"Officer Chen, I have urgent business to report to Officer Wang in person. I wonder where he is right now?"

Su Bai was unwilling to tell the person in front of him about Mao Buli's matter, as it was a serious matter and he could only feel at ease if he reported it directly to the constable.

"Looking for Officer Wang?"

The constable Chen raised an eyebrow, his scrutiny intensifying, and switched the lantern handle to his other hand.

"If there's anything you need, you can tell me first, and I will pass it on for you."

A temporary constable, upon meeting a regular constable, did not speak frankly about the matter.

The insistence on reporting to the police in person displeased him and aroused some suspicion.

Su Bai frowned, and in the lamplight, he could see the aloofness and hidden impatience in Chen the constable's eyes.

He suppressed the surging restlessness and anxiety brought on by the urgency of time, and his tone became more resolute:

"I'm really sorry to trouble Constable Chen, but this matter is urgent, and I must report it to the constable in person!"

After saying that, Su Bai turned and left.

He completely ignored the ugly expression on the face of Constable Chen behind him.

Normally, taxi drivers on duty should stay at the company at night and rarely leave without permission.

But tonight, I can't find anyone.

What bad luck.

Su Bai walked out of the tall gatehouse of the Zhenfu Division. He stood at the bottom of the stone steps, his brows furrowed.

We can't wait until tomorrow.

Mao Buli was already dead, and the experienced coroners were fully capable of deduce the approximate time of his death.

If I don't report it now and wait until tomorrow morning when the condition of the body changes before reporting it, I'm afraid I won't be able to escape being accused of "delaying reporting" or even "concealing information".

The credit might be greatly diminished then.

Since no official messenger could be found at the moment, the only option was to find a trustworthy official messenger to act as a messenger or witness.

In a flash, several figures appeared in his mind, but finally settled on Xiang Quan.

Uncle Xiang and his father had been colleagues for many years and had taken good care of him. At present, Uncle Xiang seemed to be the most reliable candidate, and he also knew where Uncle Xiang lived.

……

Before long, Su Bai walked through the quiet streets and alleys and arrived at a slightly old courtyard in the west of the city.

He knocked on one of the wooden doors.

"Who is it?"

A slightly wary voice came from inside the house; it was Xiang Quan.

"Uncle Xiang, it's me, Su Bai," Su Bai replied in a low voice.

"Squeak—"

The door was pulled open, and Xiang Quan, already dressed in his coat, stood inside, holding a short, unsheathed knife in his hand, clearly still on guard.

Only when they saw it was Su Bai did they lower their guard.

"Come in and speak."

Xiang Quan stepped aside, his gaze quickly sweeping across the dark alley behind Su Bai.

Su Bai slipped inside and gently closed the door behind him.

"Uncle Xiang, I have something urgent to report to Chief Wang, who is on duty tonight, but I couldn't find him at the office." Su Bai got straight to the point.

"What is it? Is it so important that we have to report it to the police overnight?" Xiang Quan placed the short knife on the table, pulled up a chair and sat down, gesturing for Su Bai to sit as well, his brows furrowing slightly.

"Tonight, I ran into Mao Buli, the leader of the Black Fiend Gang," Su Bai said in a deep voice.

"Mao Buli?!" Xiang Quan leaned forward, exclaiming softly, all sleepiness gone, a sharp glint in his eyes. "Are you sure? Is this really true?"

"Absolutely true." Su Bai nodded, then uttered an even more astonishing statement, "Moreover, I have already killed him."

"What?!"

Xiang Quan suddenly stood up from his chair, his eyes wide, his face filled with disbelief.

He originally thought that Su Bai had at most discovered Mao Buli's whereabouts, so he was eager to report it.

kill?

Mao Buli is such a fierce character, how could Su Bai, a young temporary constable, possibly handle him?

He had worked with Su Bai's father for many years, and although he didn't fully understand Su Bai's background, he knew that Su Bai was not a master who could easily kill a ruthless person like Mao Buli.

"How...how could you kill him?"

Xiang Quan's voice was somewhat hoarse with shock, and his gaze was fixed on Su Bai, trying to find any trace of joke or panic on his face, but he only saw a deep silence.

"Uncle Xiang, words alone are not enough."

Su Bai knew that further explanation would be futile at this point, so he stood up, his tone resolute.

"If you don't believe me, come with me and you'll see. Mao Buli's body is not far away. Once you see the body, everything will become clear."

......

At Su Bai's home.

Xiang Quan squatted beside the corpse, his gaze like the finest ruler, sweeping over the mangled wounds and twisted limbs inch by inch.

Finally, it lifted up again and landed on Su Bai's face, who was standing to the side, his clothes dusty and with bloodstains still on the corner of his mouth.

His brows furrowed deeply, his face a mixture of shock, confusion, and lingering disbelief.

"Su Bai," Xiang Quan's voice sounded particularly deep in the quiet room.

"Tell me honestly, how exactly did you... kill him?"

He deliberately emphasized the word "how".

Mao Buli is a genuine master of the first level of martial arts, the Skin Refining Realm. He is ruthless and has rich combat experience.

Even if Xiang Quan were to face him, he wouldn't dare say he had a sure victory.

Su Bai?

How is this possible for a novice who has only been practicing martial arts for a little over a month?

"Uncle Xiang, is that really true?" Su Bai rubbed his slightly cold hands and began to recount, his speech steady yet tinged with lingering fear.

"I was about to go to sleep tonight, and I was half asleep when I suddenly heard rustling noises coming from the kitchen, and a soft sound like something was being knocked over."

He pointed towards the dark kitchen and continued:

"My heart skipped a beat. I thought I'd been robbed, so I pulled out the dagger I kept by my pillow for self-defense. Barefoot, I held my breath and crept closer. It was dark inside, and I couldn't see anything, so I hid in the shadows by the kitchen door and waited."

"Then, when that dark figure groped its way out of the kitchen doorway," Su Bai made a sudden, darting movement,

"I didn't have time to think, and I couldn't even see who it was. I just felt my heart was about to jump out of my chest, and instinctively I stabbed them with all my might!"

"It went smoothly; the knife went in right away." A hint of tension, as if recalling that moment, appeared on Su Bai's face.

"The man groaned, and then I felt like I had been hit in the chest with a big iron hammer. I flew backward and my back hit the corner of the table in the main room. The pain made my vision go black and my mouth tasted like blood."

He wiped his mouth:

"Strangely, after he knocked me away, he didn't chase after me to finish me off. Instead, he turned around and ran towards the yard, seemingly trying to escape by climbing over the wall. I was in too much pain to get up and could only watch helplessly."

But what's even stranger is... he ran to the wall and tried several times, but... he couldn't get over it!

His movements were unsteady; he clung to the wall, then slid down again, as if he had no strength left.
