Chapter 17 Where Did Dad Go?
Lynn looked at the girl with some surprise, who was chasing after even a 25-cent coin.
Despite being extremely greedy, he is very principled when it comes to matters of principle.
This only strengthened Lynn's resolve.
An assistant with principles, self-awareness, good skills, and diligence is worth investing in for the long term.
"Take it."
Without saying a word, Lynn stuffed the money into the pocket of her large scrub suit, keeping only 1,200 for herself.
"This eight hundred is what you deserve."
"The car is yours, and you did the modifications. If you hadn't cooperated so well, I wouldn't have been able to complete the surgery so quickly."
"And this is just the beginning. I need a stable and good partner."
Lynn looked into her eyes, his attitude sincere:
"From now on, it will be 64 points."
"Take it, Cassie. This is business, not charity."
Upon hearing Lynn address him differently, Cassie's hand went limp, and he accepted the gift.
After deducting rent and loan payments, even after working herself to the bone at Metropolitan Hospital for a month, she only had this much disposable income left.
Now, following Lynn, he earned money in just twenty minutes.
"Okay... then I'll accept it."
Cassie lowered her head, her voice trembling slightly.
"I must practice suturing to a higher level and memorize anatomy even more thoroughly."
If I become more skilled, maybe I'll be able to perform double surgeries with Lynn in the future, and then I can earn money in one night...
So many eight hundred!
"Let's go, to celebrate the grand opening!"
Cassie grinned, revealing his small fangs that gleamed under the operating lights.
"Let's go get pizza! It's on me!"
"Pizza?" Lynn raised an eyebrow.
"Pizza is the best food for celebration!"
Cassie looked serious.
"When I was a child, whenever something good happened in my family, such as when I got first place in an exam or when my mother received double the welfare money, we would buy pizza."
"It's round, everyone sits in a circle."
"Hot, with meat and cheese, that's the best thing in the world."
……
Half an hour later.
The ambulance pulled up in front of a long-established pizzeria in Brooklyn.
This isn't an American fast-food chain like Domino's; it's a genuine Italian handcrafted kiln-baked restaurant.
The kind that doesn't allow pineapple.
Inflation continued after Trump took office.
With prices soaring, a handmade thin-crust pizza topped with Parma ham, Burrata cheese, and fresh basil has reached a price of $48.
Domino's is as low as $6.99.
For Cassie in the past, eating such an expensive pizza was something she would never have dared to dream of.
But today, she boldly snapped up a brand new fifty-dollar bill.
"It's on me today!"
The two carried the steaming pizza boxes back to the car.
Inside the carriage, the expensive bouquet of Austin roses exuded a delicate fragrance, which blended surprisingly harmoniously with the rich aroma of wheat and cheese from the pizza.
Cassie opened the box, and steam rose up.
She eagerly grabbed a piece, and the melting cheese stretched into long strands.
Just as she was about to put it in her mouth, she stopped.
Out of habit, she reached out with her other hand to tear off the tip of the ham and cheese and put it back in the box.
That was muscle memory she had developed over many years.
Back when my family was poor, we had to carefully budget even for a regular pizza.
As the eldest sister, she always left the parts with the most meat and cheese to her younger sisters who were still growing, while she only ate the dry, hard crusts of the pizza, and said with a smile, "I just like to eat crispy bits."
"What's wrong? Is this ham not fresh?"
Lynn was holding a piece in her hand, and had already taken a big bite.
"No...no."
Cassie looked at the whole pizza in her hand, piled high with toppings.
She suddenly realized that she now had $750 in cash in her pocket, a partner sitting next to her who was willing to share 40% of the profits with her, and she would earn even more in the future!
She doesn't need to give in anymore.
No more eating only the dry, hard pizza crust.
Cassie withdrew her hand that was about to tear it apart, opened her mouth wide, and took a big bite of the fattest and most tempting triangular tip.
The savory ham and bursting cheese explode in your mouth.
"Mmm...it's so delicious!"
She called out indistinctly, her cheeks puffed out like a hamster's, but her eyes were a little moist.
She chewed vigorously, not wanting Lynn to notice anything amiss, but she ate very seriously, not wanting to drop even a tiny crumb on the ground.
This was the most expensive and best-tasting pizza she had ever eaten in her life.
Lynn watched without saying anything, but quietly pushed the larger slice of pizza in her hand toward her.
"Eat slowly, Cassie."
"There are many more."
……
Metropolitan Hospital, VIP ward.
There are many more fresh flowers on the windowsill here.
Lynn held the Doppler ultrasound probe in his hand and slowly moved it over Marcus's right leg, where the swelling had subsided considerably.
"Thump, thump, thump..."
A powerful pulsating sound came from the speaker.
Lynn put away the probe and gently pressed the toe that was sticking out of the cast with her finger.
The nail bed turns white when pressed, but quickly returns to its rosy color within two seconds after the pressure is released.
"The blood vessels have reopened perfectly, the skin temperature is normal, and the nerve reflexes are recovering."
Lynn quickly jotted down notes on the medical record board: "You're really lucky, Mr. Kim."
Marcus King lay half-reclined on the hospital bed, this 2.1-meter-tall black giant staring at Lynn like a well-behaved schoolboy.
"Just call me Marcus, Doctor."
A simple, honest smile appeared on his rugged face.
"My agent just called; Nike has reviewed the surgery report and the latest imaging images."
"They decided to continue fulfilling the contract."
Marcus pointed to the long scar on his leg.
Lynn sewed it herself.
"I heard that your suturing technique played a big role in the recovery."
"They even thought the scar was cool, calling it a 'warrior's medal,' and wanted to design a new sneaker for me based on it."
"Doctor, you saved more than just my leg."
Marcus's voice was somewhat low.
"You saved my whole family."
Lynn smiled and instinctively wanted to say a few polite words, such as, "It's a doctor's duty."
But Marcus interrupted him.
The number one draft pick, who was usually so arrogant on the court, was filled with lingering fear.
"Doctor, you know what? I actually envy you Asians."
Lynn raised an eyebrow:
"Envy us for studying so hard every day, yet being rejected by Ivy League universities because of 'racial quotas'?"
No, that's not it.
"That's why you East Asians value education so much."
Marcus shook his head, his gaze fixed on the bustling Manhattan skyline outside the window.
"If you don't play ball, don't sing, don't join gangs..."
"You could also get an accounting certificate, become a programmer, or become a doctor like you."
"You have a good education and your parents are there to support you."
"But we didn't."
"I've never even met my biological father, but I've met quite a few men that my mother brought home."
Marcus stared blankly as he counted on his fingers.
