The bishop is unfathomable.

Chapter 2 The Strange Coachman

The incident ended abruptly.

After retrieving his temporarily confiscated suitcase, Li Wei walked out of the supervisory bureau with a sigh.

As soon as he stepped outside, he saw a somewhat dilapidated black four-wheeled carriage parked in front of the fountain statue in front of the Bureau of Supervision's gate. The coachman was standing in front of the carriage, looking up at the gate of the Bureau of Supervision from time to time, as if he was looking for someone.

The other person was wearing a cheap black leather jacket and a gray top hat that also gave off a cheap vibe. He looked somewhat awkward and nervous.

Hmm... that's not surprising.

After all, this is the Inspectorate. For every citizen of the Lerepon Empire, this is not a place they can approach with a calm and peaceful mind.

During the reign of the previous emperor, the Censorate was practically synonymous with death; nine out of ten men who were taken away by the Censorate and imprisoned would not come out alive.

Even if you are completely innocent, it's the same.

Although the country has changed a lot under the reforms of the current Queen Beatrix, it will still take some time to change stereotypes.

But Li Wei soon noticed that the coachman was looking at him, and upon seeing him, he immediately took off his hat and ran over to him in a few quick steps.

"Sir... no, Mr. Li Wei, I've been waiting for you for a long time. Please get in the car quickly."

Li Wei was taken aback for a moment, then realized, "Oh, you were sent by the library to pick me up, right?"

"This is really troublesome. I'm just a new employee, but they're paying so much attention to me."

"Sorry to keep you waiting, let's get going."

Upon hearing Li Wei's words, the coachman paused briefly before quickly replying, "Ah, yes, yes, that's right, I am the library, um... what's my name again... oh right, I'm the one sent by the Norren Grand Library to pick you up."

Li Wei sized up the driver, who seemed a bit off, for a while, but seeing the driver's warm and ingratiating smile, he didn't think too much about it and went straight into the carriage to sit down.

After Li Wei was settled, the coachman returned to his seat, cracked the whip, and spurred the carriage toward the Great Library of Norren.

Meanwhile, in an office on the second floor of the Inspectorate, Inspector General Black watched the departing carriage thoughtfully and silently lit a cigarette.

"We finally managed to fool them."

"If the news of the faceless man's death hadn't come at the right time, this matter would have been really difficult to handle."

"In addition, there's chaos outside, and not enough manpower left in the bureau, otherwise it would be difficult to find a reason to let an intern inspector be in charge of the interrogation."

"However, even though they're not from the same faction, would that faceless bishop, known within the church for his ability to escape, hide, and survive, really die so easily?"

"Or is the one who just left the interrogation room the real one?"

"Otherwise, why would those henchmen of the Faceless Man, who are being hunted all over the streets, risk being exposed to come to the Inspection Bureau and beg me to release that scholar named Li Wei as soon as possible?"

"..."

"...No, the faceless one must indeed be dead."

"The church's agents, the head of the overseer's office, and a bunch of henchmen."

"With such a heavy encirclement and various location-tracking spells, it's understandable that he couldn't escape."

"Even if a substitute fakes its death, it cannot hide from the divine magic of the substitute."

"Not to mention Li Wei, he is indeed just an ordinary person, without a trace of spiritual energy in him."

"Those reckless lunatics must have made a mistake. Ha, they spent a fortune to rescue a fake. I wonder how they'll react when they find out."

Before he knew it, Inspector General Black, lost in thought, had finished a cigarette, and the black carriage had long since disappeared.

Blake then closed the door, stubbed out his cigarette on the marble windowsill, and turned back to his office chair, no longer thinking about anything else.

……

"Sir, we've arrived at the Grand Library."

The coachman's voice came from outside the carriage.

Li Wei closed the book, and just as he was about to reply, he saw that the carriage door had been respectfully opened by the driver.

"Please come down, be careful."

As he spoke, the driver picked up the suitcase that was placed next to Li Wei's feet, and with his other hand he held the carriage door, revealing a fawning and ingratiating smile.

Li Wei smiled helplessly, then took a few coins out of his pocket and put them into the coachman's coat pocket.

"Here you go, this is your tip."

After saying that, he got off the carriage, took the suitcase from the coachman, and looked up at the huge building in front of him.

This massive building, five stories high and covering nearly half a city block, stood before Li Wei within the Beldor Autonomous District.

Even though I had seen photos of this world-famous library, the largest library in the entire Northern Continent, in books and travel guides before coming, I could still feel the grandeur of the building when I actually stood in front of it.

According to my understanding, this building was originally a monastery of the Church of Radiance, which was later occupied by a nobleman and used as a fortress to defend against enemies and a prison to hold rebels.

Later, after the Keepers of the Secrets took over the building, it underwent some renovations, which is why it looks the way it does today.

Therefore, although this building looks very grand, what you see is actually only the tip of the iceberg.

The underground space of this large library is definitely much larger than the part above ground.

Before he could take a closer look, the library's heavy black solid wood doors were pushed open.

An elderly man with white hair, looking somewhat frail, leaned on a cane with one hand and pushed up his glasses on the bridge of his nose with the other. He looked at Li Wei and said, "Please come in, Mr. Li Wei."

"I'm glad you got rid of the trouble and weren't late."

"There are a few things the library needs to explain before you officially start working here."

Li Wei nodded and followed the old man through the gate.

Soon, led by the old man, Li Wei walked through the library's corridors, which were not complicated but certainly long enough, and then entered an office.

The old man sat down naturally and skillfully in his assigned seat, then gestured for Li Wei to sit down, and began to introduce himself.

"My name is Pauline Barris. I am the librarian of this library. You can just call me Barris."

"There are some things you must remember before you start working here."

"Your position is the administrator of the forbidden library; you must remember your work area."

"The building on the east side is an office area and a warehouse, which is where this office is located."

"The area around the north gate is an exhibition area open to the public. It is usually vacant, but occasionally it is rented out to artists or businessmen who need to hold exhibitions."

"The building on the west side is the library's book storage area."

"The first to third floors of the library are open to the public. Any legal citizen with identification documents can come here to borrow any book."

"The fourth and fifth floors, as well as the basement to the fifth floor, are all forbidden book vaults, which is the area you are theoretically responsible for."

"But please relax, your workload is not heavy."

"The underground area is a permanently sealed-off zone, protected by complex ritual spells and barriers. All you need to do is periodically check the condition of the barriers and record it, and report any abnormalities to me."

"The fourth and fifth floors are your actual work areas."
