My Terrible Life in Those Years
57. The Small Business Owner's Family Affairs
Seeing Kang Ning's blank stare and Wan Ning's puzzled expression, I began to regret bringing Du Yan here.
I found her a spot in the corner against the wall to sit, where there was a TV above her head, which would help her pass the time.
Then quickly distribute the fruit to them.
Kang Ning pointed at Du Yan seriously: "Who's this?"
I quickly explained to Wan Ning, who was standing next to him, "This is my neighbor. She just had a little accident, and I was worried that something else might happen to her, so I brought her over to check on her."
Just as Kang Ning was about to speak in protest, Wan Ning patted him, got up, grabbed a cup, poured some warm water, and handed it to her.
She didn't seem to care about me at all; instead, she immediately started taking care of her.
My heart warmed. My initial thoughts of explaining to Wan Ning and my unease vanished with her complete trust and silent support!
"Hey kid, why didn't you mention to my sister yesterday that today was your last day at work? When I tested her just now, she looked so surprised!" Kang Ning was clearly unhappy, thinking I had played a trick on him and wanted to change his mind and stay here.
"Hey boss, perfect timing! Come out here for a second, I have something to ask you."
Before Wan Ning returned to the counter, Kang Ning and I went outside to help Uncle Ye, preparing the vegetables and chatting as we went.
"What did the village committee say about the land reclamation and inheritance rights? Did you go and ask them today?"
I'm too lazy to waste time with Corning, let's get straight to the point.
Corning's eyes flickered, and he stammered.
My mind went blank for a moment.
"You haven't asked yet, have you? It's such a big deal?"
I really want to open his head and see if it's filled with brain or water!
"I need to go get stock and do inventory today, I don't have time!"
"What about Wan Ning? Is she also unavailable?"
"She has to work during the day and comes to help out early in the evening, how could she have time?" His tone suddenly turned cold.
He was probably thinking, "You little brat, you're really meddling in my business. What's it to you what our family affairs are? Do you really think you're some kind of brother-in-law?"
I'm speechless. What kind of personality is this? No wonder they keep backing down even when people come to bully them.
Timid, afraid of trouble, afraid to step up when things happen, afraid to ask questions when things go wrong—this is how an enviable farmer from a top-tier city has ended up living such a miserable life, and even dragging Wanning down with him.
If Wan Ning weren't here, I would have just thrown my clothes down and left!
I was angry, and seeing him go inside and get busy, I didn't bother to talk to him anymore.
"Uncle Ye, what's wrong with the young boss? What kind of temper does he have?"
I couldn't hold it in any longer and complained to Ye Bu as I handed him the food.
Uncle Ye squinted, his hands constantly turning the fork, the rising fumes covering his face with oil stains.
"You can't entirely blame him!"
I was taken aback. Such a serious matter, and he can't be entirely blamed?
Is there something else going on here?
"What happened?"
As I asked, I looked inside and saw Wan Ning talking to Du Yan.
Wan Ning is truly a model of beauty inside and out.
"Kang Ning and Wan Ning were born after their mother remarried their father. Normally, if their father were still alive, the issues of their household registration, names, and inheritance rights could have been resolved. But after his sudden accidental death, the matter was put on hold. It's not unreasonable for some people in the village to want to obstruct them. Besides, their mother, having married out of the village, already had little standing. Now, who would willingly help them?"
This Uncle Ye seems to know quite a lot.
I've finally figured this out and sorted it out. It turns out there are so many intricacies involved in his family's affairs.
If that's the case, then it makes some sense.
"So, are we just going to leave this matter as it is? Let that little bastard Chengzai run wild?"
Uncle Ye gave me a meaningful look: "Isn't there still yours?"
Hey, Uncle Ye, what's with that look in your eyes?
I'm not his brother-in-law, at least not now!
Damn, he's not even a prospective brother-in-law!
I could easily understand the hidden meaning in Uncle Ye's words. I smiled and quickly served the grilled dishes to the guests. After the other two tables of guests had placed their orders, I hurriedly handed them the order slips.
"Uncle Ye, as a seasoned veteran, aren't you going to do something about this?"
I found it strange. Aunt Shu from the company and Uncle Ye from this stall are both shrewd and experienced people. How come they acted as if they were completely indifferent to this matter? As if it had nothing to do with them?
Uncle Ye raised an eyebrow, twirling his fork in his hand. "Kid, my status isn't much different from yours. I'm just a temporary worker who's been here a bit longer than you. Why should I care about this kind of thing? Besides, I have some things on my own that I can't show my face in public. Things in the village are more complicated than you think. I don't want to get involved in this mess."
"You look so worried; it doesn't seem like today is your last day at work!"
Uncle Ye looked at my face and laughed.
Hey, Corning knows everything he says.
I stared at Uncle Ye for a long time, but he didn't react at all.
"Uncle Ye, what do you think? Should I think of a way to stay? I have a feeling that Chengzai will still come and bother Wanning!"
My last sentence still revealed my attitude and inner thoughts.
Uncle Ye chuckled and fell silent. This old fellow was leaving it to me to figure out.
They won't come up with any ideas; they'll just wait and see what I do.
I was furious: "I treated you to fruit for nothing!"
He wasn't angry and continued working happily.
The two girls were talking slowly over there, glancing at me every now and then, which made me feel uneasy.
Du Yan, would she tell Wan Ning about me carrying her out of the bathroom?
Holy crap, that's a huge problem.
I was just wondering how to tell Wan Ning when my phone rang.
Hmm? Let me look at the screen. This call isn't from Aunt Shu, nor is it from Old Liu. Who could it be?
Not many people know my phone number.
I wondered if it was a spam call or a sales call.
Thinking about it that way, I just hung up.
The phone rang again in less than a second. It was the same number. Are salespeople this aggressive these days?
I was surprised, but I accepted it.
"Hello, who is this?" I asked directly, sounding impatient.
There was a pause on the phone, followed by a tentative question after a short half-second: "Who...who are you?"
I got furious. They're looking for my number and asking who I am? Are they out of their minds?
"You might as well tell me who you are. You gave me your phone number, why are you asking me who I am?"
I could tell from the voice that it was a middle-aged man's deep voice. He sounded quite masculine and had a magnetic quality.
The middle-aged man across from me seemed to breathe more heavily after I made that sarcastic remark.
But she held back: "Did Xiaoyan just call me from this phone? I want to talk to her!"
Just as I was about to curse, "You little brat, I don't have Xiao Yan here," it suddenly occurred to me, "Could it be that you're looking for Du Yan?"
Just an hour ago, she used my phone to call him.
I opened my mouth, wanting to curse, but I had no reason to. I was just Du Yan's neighbor.
"Wait a minute, I'll give the phone to her!"
He quickly entered the store and handed the phone to Du Yan.
"He's looking for you!"
