My Terrible Life in Those Years
67. Injuries to outsourced workers
She was already quite drunk after just half a glass of wine.
The wine itself doesn't intoxicate, but the person themselves does!
After just half a glass of beer, her face flushed red, so I quickly told her to stop, and after she finished eating, I took her home to rest.
On the way, Lao Liu specifically asked me, "What happened to that guy surnamed Wu who investigated you last time?"
"What can he do to me? I'm the company's star employee, a top performer, with powerful bosses above me and several girls swaying me. I'm not afraid of him at all!"
In front of him, I couldn't be bothered to pretend to be modest, and I boasted without restraint!
Besides, he'd had a little wine!
Old Liu immediately looked down on him.
"Old Jiang, have you no shame? If you're really that powerful, why are you being investigated? And you're just a temporary worker?"
"The background check is a normal onboarding procedure. Do you know how amazing our subsidiary is? It's a near-listed company, you know? Who knows, you might see our company's name on the stock market tomorrow, and be able to buy our stock, understand?"
"Besides, so what if I'm a temporary worker? I earned over ten thousand in bonuses in just a few days, so what? How much did you earn?"
Old Liu burst into wild laughter.
"Old Jiang, it's been a while, and your bragging skills have really improved! You make so much money, you're practically begging to buy a cup of coffee!"
"You don't know anything! Don't flaunt your wealth!" I rolled my eyes at him.
Du Yan watched our banter with envy.
The two of them were rambling on and on when my phone rang again.
Du Yan immediately tensed up and quickly glanced at the phone screen.
Let's see if it's that jerk calling again.
The phone number wasn't familiar; it was a mobile number, but it probably wasn't his.
"Feed?"
"Is this Jiang Ning?" That voice sounds somewhat familiar.
I was stunned for a moment. Apart from the company, Lao Liu, and that scumbag, no one else knew my phone number.
"It's me!"
"I am Wu Bo!"
Holy crap, we were just talking about him and he's already calling. Calling on Saturday?
Something's not right.
"What's wrong, Manager Wu? Is there something you need?"
"There's something urgent I need your help with!" Manager Wu's tone was slightly hurried. Could it really be something urgent?
"Oh, go ahead and say it!"
"There's a construction project at the stadium. A worker accidentally fell from the scaffolding. It's the closest to your location, but I'm out of town. Could you go check on him and see how serious it is? Once you get there, report back to me!"
My mind raced, trying to decipher the meaning of these words.
Why should I, a temporary worker, handle this kind of thing?
But should I refuse to go?
If your superior asks you to handle something urgent, can you really refuse?
"Okay, Manager Wu. I'll go check it out on-site first and then report back! It would be best if you sent a senior colleague along; I'm a newbie, and there are some things I might not be able to handle!"
As I reeled in the line, Lao Liu looked at me with excitement.
"Old Jiang, I told you, you were destined for an exciting life, weren't you? One thing after another, you'll never be idle!"
"Stop talking nonsense. Something's happened. I need to go to the construction site. A worker fell. Manager Wu wants me to go check on the situation!"
Old Liu tugged at me: "Come on, I'll go take a look with you!"
I said to Du Yan, "I have some business at the company, so I need to borrow your camera for a bit. I might need to take some photos."
Du Yan would never object to this.
She went back to rest with a worried look on her face, while Lao Liu and I took the bus to the stadium.
That bastard, he's always chasing after excitement. If I didn't take him with me to the rented apartment, I reckon he would have thoroughly investigated everything about Du Yan next door—her ancestors, birth dates, fortune, and even her affair with that scumbag!
This guy has that ability to subtly uncover the secrets of naive young women, peeling back layers of their clues without them even realizing it.
Thinking about that scene, I couldn't bear to let Du Yan face him alone.
When we arrived at the stadium construction site, the scene was already in complete chaos.
The ambulance has arrived, but for some reason, there are a lot of people watching the scene.
I finally managed to squeeze in.
I saw several doctors standing helplessly by the car, while the workers were surrounding the worker who had fallen.
A large group of bystanders, passersby, and people working there were watching how things unfolded.
It seemed as if they didn't want to get the injured worker on the bus for treatment immediately.
A young nurse, wearing a mask, was kindly trying to persuade her.
"You need to get him in the car and take him to the hospital for a checkup right away. He's bleeding, and we need to see where he fell. If he hit his head or any internal organs, we need to get it checked out as soon as possible. We've already delayed for over half an hour; if something serious happens, it will be a huge loss!"
The worker, with bloodstains on his head, body, and clothes, was a dark-skinned middle-aged man lying on the ground with lifeless eyes.
The man talking to the nurse appears to be the foreman of this team of workers.
"That won't do. The person who hired us isn't here. We can't just go to the hospital like this. If they deny everything and something happens, we can't afford to take responsibility."
Several workers nearby also started making a fuss.
"Absolutely! The responsible company and its personnel must be present to clarify the responsibilities first. Otherwise, we're not going anywhere!"
The young nurse's delicate eyebrows were already furrowed. She had talked herself hoarse trying to talk these workers to a standstill, but they just wouldn't cooperate.
"Didn't you just call their manager? What exactly did you say? Why hasn't anyone come yet?"
"He said he wasn't in town and would send a colleague from his company to handle it immediately. But he hasn't shown up yet. If anything goes wrong, we'll hold him responsible!"
I almost exploded.
I stumbled upon the legendary situation where workers get injured and no one takes responsibility?
Old Liu had never seen anything like this before, and he tugged at me, "What should we do? Should we try to persuade them to do the inspection first?"
I ignored him, quickly left the crowd, and hurried to a less crowded place to make a phone call.
Old Liu followed out with a puzzled look on his face.
"Manager Wu, I just arrived at the scene. That worker absolutely refuses to get in the car to go to the hospital for a checkup. He says he won't go unless someone other than our responsible party comes to the scene and clarifies the responsibility. What do you think?"
Is it serious?
"It's hard to say. There's bleeding inside his head, under his body, and on the ground. The doctor can't say for sure; he said he needs to do an examination first."
I spoke very carefully about what I saw and heard, trying my best to avoid expressing any of my own emotions.
"What happened? How could you be so careless? I'm calling the person in charge of the outsourcing company. You stay here and wait!"
He hung up the phone quickly.
What kind of instruction is this?
I already know from the information I compiled earlier that these workers are not employees of our company. If they were employees of our company, we would have been on the bus to check them long ago.
These workers are probably afraid that neither their contractor nor our company will take responsibility, and that they'll have to pay for their own injuries, so they're lying on the ground instead of going to the hospital!
Old Liu looked bewildered: "Just waiting?"
I shook my head and quickly made a second call!
If this matter is not handled properly, it could become a huge scapegoat!
