Reborn in the Chinese Entertainment Industry: My Childhood Sweetheart is Boss Yang
Chapter 18 Xiangshan Film and Television City
The plane landed at Ningbo Lishe Airport.
In November, the air in Jiangnan is moist and slightly cool, quite different from the dry cold of Beijing.
Yang Mi was wearing a beige trench coat.
Like a bird just released from its cage, it is full of wonder about everything around it.
"This is the South."
She took a deep breath, feeling the completely different humidity level in the air.
Gu Heng followed behind her, dragging two large suitcases.
"Don't wander off, or you might get kidnapped by human traffickers and sold to the mountains."
"You're the one who'll get kidnapped," Yang Mi said, turning around and making a face at him.
At the airport exit, a person holding a sign that read "The Return of the Condor Heroes" had been waiting for a long time.
He was a man in his thirties, with dark skin and a capable appearance. He introduced himself as surnamed Li and said he was in charge of production crew.
Mr. Li was very polite and offered to take the luggage from Gu Heng's hands, but Gu Heng politely declined with a smile.
Once in the car, Yang Mi couldn't resist pressing her face against the window, watching the scenery rushing past outside.
It's quite a long journey from downtown Ningbo to Xiangshan.
More than an hour later, the car slowly drove into a magnificent group of antique-style buildings.
"Wow."
Yang Mi opened her mouth in surprise.
With its blue bricks and gray tiles, flying eaves and brackets, the buildings seemed to have stepped out of a historical painting, giving her the illusion of traveling through time.
This is Xiangshan Film and Television City.
The car made several turns before finally stopping in front of a guesthouse that looked rather old.
Mr. Li led the two to the front desk, completed the check-in procedures, and handed them two keys.
"Teachers, most of our crew members live here for easier management. Please settle in first, and someone will contact you later to familiarize yourself with the surroundings."
After saying this, Master Li nodded and took his leave in a hurry.
Yang Mi took the keys and ran upstairs excitedly.
Gu Heng followed behind at a leisurely pace.
He looked around the guesthouse: narrow corridors, mottled walls, and a faint musty smell in the air.
"Click".
Yang Mi opened her bedroom door, and the smile on her face vanished.
The room was small and the furnishings were so simple they bordered on shabby.
A wooden bed, a desk, a chair, and an old-fashioned wardrobe were all the family's belongings.
The blanket also looks a bit damp.
"This...this is where we live?"
This was so different from what she had imagined—the scene of celebrities staying in luxury hotels while filming.
"The conditions are a bit lacking." Gu Heng walked out from next door, where the layout was exactly the same as Yang Mi's place.
"How could this happen? Did the production crew run out of money?"
Gu Heng walked to the window and looked at the surroundings. "I have the money, but I won't spend it on newcomers."
Film crews are like small societies; treating people differently based on their status is standard practice. Lead actors and well-known supporting actors naturally stay in five-star hotels. Newcomers like them, without fame or connections, are lucky to even have a place to stay.
"What are we going to do? Are we going to have to stay here for months?"
"Of course not."
Gu Heng turned around and smiled at her.
He took out his phone and dialed Chen Kai's number.
"Chen Kai, it's me."
"Boss, what can I do for you?"
"Have the things I asked you to prepare been delivered?"
"As you instructed, it has been sent to Xiangshan and is awaiting your reply."
"Great, deliver it to the hotel, book a large private room, and let me know when it's ready."
"clear!"
After hanging up the phone, Gu Heng saw Yang Mi still sitting on the edge of the bed, sulking.
"Let's go, what are you waiting for?" Gu Heng knocked on the door frame.
"Where to?" Yang Mi looked up, her voice muffled.
"Let me show you the ways of the world and its people."
An hour later, in a private room of what looked like the most upscale restaurant near Xiangshan Film and Television City.
A large round table was packed with people.
Gu Heng invited several key figures from the film crew to dinner.
There was Mr. Li, the stage manager who picked them up in the afternoon, as well as several "brothers" who managed personnel, props, and extras.
These people may not hold high positions, but they wield considerable power; they are the true "local bullies" within the film crew.
But to Gu Heng's surprise, when he initially told Master Li that he could bring some friends, this man actually brought over director Yu Min.
"Director Yu, brothers, Mimi and I are new here and don't know anyone. We'll have to rely on you all to take care of us in the future."
Gu Heng stood up, picked up his wine glass, and adopted a very humble posture.
He took out several cartons of high-end cigarettes that were hard to find on the market, as well as several bottles of beautifully packaged vintage wines that Chen Kai had given him.
They were handed over one by one.
"It's just a small token of my appreciation."
The production crew members exchanged glances, their faces showing knowing smiles.
While saying "You're too kind, Xiao Gu," he didn't hesitate to put the things away.
After several rounds of drinks and five courses of food,
Gu Heng always managed to find topics that interested the other party, from the hardships of filming to interesting anecdotes in the industry, and every word he said was very pleasing to these veterans.
Yang Mi sat next to him, initially a little reserved, but gradually relaxed and joined Gu Heng in toasting.
She could tell that Gu Heng was paving the way for the two of them.
The meal was a pleasant one for both the host and guests.
The way the group addressed Gu Heng had changed from "Little Gu" to "Brother Gu".
As the dinner was drawing to a close, Gu Heng sighed, seemingly unintentionally.
Yu Min was enjoying her drink when she casually asked, "Brother Gu, what's wrong? Something on your mind?"
Gu Heng smiled and said in a joking tone, "It's nothing serious. It's just the guesthouse arranged by the crew. As a grown man with thick skin, I don't care about the conditions. It's just that Mimi has always had sensitive skin. I'm worried about the dampness. If her face is swollen when she's on camera, it will affect Guo Xiang's charm. I'm afraid Director Zhang will hang me on the city gate tower to dry out."
Who are Yu Min and the other production managers? They're all seasoned veterans.
They understood the meaning behind those words instantly.
"Oh, I thought it was something serious!" HR manager Wang slapped his thigh. "This is because the staff below didn't handle it properly! The guesthouse was just a temporary transit point; they forgot to arrange a change for you. Director Yu, what do you think…?"
Yu Min glared at Brother Wang, then smiled kindly at Gu Heng and said, "It's no big deal. Here, Lao Wang, you arrange for them to stay at our hotel."
After the dinner, Gu Heng and Yang Mi saw everyone off.
On the way back to the hotel, Yang Mi looked at Gu Heng's profile with curiosity and surprise in her eyes.
"How...how do you know all this? And why would they agree?"
In her eyes, Gu Heng was like a little adult, knowing everything.
"That's called basic social etiquette," Gu Heng smiled. "They're not spending their own money; they're using the production crew's money to build their connections. We, on the other hand, spend a little money to do a lot. By taking good care of these people, we can have a comfortable time on set."
Yang Mi nodded, seemingly understanding but not quite.
She felt as if she were getting to know her childhood sweetheart all over again.
The two arrived at Xiangshan International Hotel, where the front desk had already received a notification from the film crew and respectfully handed over the room key.
The production crew prepared a suite for the two of them, with a spacious living room and two separate bedrooms.
Yang Mi stood on the soft carpet, looking at everything before her, feeling as if she were dreaming.
I was still worrying about the damp blankets in the afternoon, but I checked into a hotel that night.
"Are we... really living here?"
"What else?" Gu Heng opened his suitcase and started taking things out, as if he were performing magic.
Besides a change of clothes, there was an induction cooker, a small slow cooker, a packet of beef tallow hot pot base, and even two boxes of sliced beef and various meatballs.
"Why...why did you bring all this?" Yang Mi was stunned. This wasn't a film shoot; it looked like a picnic.
"Of course, I'm giving you special treatment." Gu Heng skillfully placed the induction cooker on the coffee table in the living room and plugged it in. "Do you think the crew's boxed meals can be that good? What if you get thin from hunger? My little Guo Xiang has to be fat and healthy."
He settled everything, then walked over to Yang Mi and looked out the window with her.
"From today onwards, this will be our temporary home."
