Reborn in '77, I have a job panel!

Chapter 13 Preparations Before Fishing

The two were squatting on the ice, with a hole the size of a washbasin carved in front of them.

Li Jianguo held a thin wooden stick in his hand, with a hemp rope tied to one end of the stick, the end of the rope dangling into the ice hole.

This is ice fishing.

Qian Cheng stopped and looked.

Li Jianguo held the wooden stick, motionless, his eyes fixed on the ice hole.

Liu Tiedan squatted down beside him, rubbing his hands together from the cold, and every now and then asked, "Brother, are there any fish?"

"No." Li Jianguo replied without turning his head.

"I've been squatting here all afternoon..."

"Shut up."

Qian Cheng looked at it for a while, shook his head, and prepared to leave.

Just then, a brilliant idea flashed into his mind.

and many more.

Career panel.

Chef, carpenter, and student can all be professions.

What about fishing?

Is fishing considered a profession?

If he could make it a profession, wouldn't he be able to ice fish every day this winter and practice his skills?

Qian Cheng's heart raced.

He turned and walked towards the ice.

Hearing footsteps, Li Jianguo turned around and saw Qian Cheng, then paused, "Brother Cheng?"

"Fishing?" Qian Cheng squatted down and looked at the ice hole.

"Hmm." Li Jianguo said a little embarrassedly, "I've been fishing all afternoon and haven't caught a single one."

Qian Cheng glanced at the "fishing rod" in his hand, which was just a thin wooden stick tied with a hemp rope. A fishhook made of bent wire was hanging from the end of the rope, with an earthworm on the hook.

This equipment is far too rudimentary.

"Let me see," Qian Cheng said.

Li Jianguo handed him the "fishing rod".

Qian Cheng took it, weighed it in his hand, and then looked at the fishhook.

The hooks were indeed sharpened quite well, but they were too big.

The hooks used for ice fishing should be smaller and thinner so that fish can easily bite.

Moreover, there's no float, so it's all about feel; no wonder you can't catch anything.

"You can't do it like this. The hook is too big, the line is too thick, and it's not even flopping yet."

Li Jianguo scratched his head: "Then what do we do?"

Qian Cheng thought for a moment and said, "I'll bring my gear tomorrow, and we'll go fishing together."

"Really?" Liu Tiedan's eyes lit up. "Brother Cheng, you know how to fish?"

"Give it a try, it's better than you guys just squatting there like this."

He returned the "fishing rod" to Li Jianguo and got up to walk home.

I already have a plan in mind.

When I got home, Hou Yufen was cooking in the outer room. There was corn porridge cooking in the pot and a small bowl of pickled vegetables steaming next to it.

"Mom, I'm home."

"Hmm," Hou Yufen responded, then suddenly stopped what she was doing, sniffed, and said, "Why do you smell like wood?"

Qian Cheng laughed: "I got it on my master while doing carpentry work at his house."

Hou Yufen turned around and looked him over: "After so many days, how's your learning going?"

"It's alright." Qian Cheng took the cloth bag out of his pocket and handed it to Hou Yufen. "My master asked me to bring it back."

Hou Yufen took it, opened it, and her hand trembled: "This, so much money? Where did it come from?"

"The chair I made was sold by the craftsman. This is what I got. After deducting the cost of the wood, I have 15.8 yuan left."

Hou Yufen held the cloth bag, her hands trembling: "Fifteen yuan and eighty cents...you earned that much in just four or five days?"

"Yes." Qian Cheng nodded. "The master said that chairs will sell well with the Chinese New Year approaching."

"Your master is a good person. You must be filial to your master in the future, you know?" Hou Yufen's eyes reddened.

Qian Cheng nodded.

He naturally knew that Zhang Changtian was a kind-hearted person.

In this era, what kind of wages did apprentices receive when working under their masters?

It all depends on the master's mood.

Most chefs only provide one or two meals at most, and pay very little in wages.

She carefully counted the money, wrapped it up again, and handed it to Qian Cheng: "Keep this, buy whatever you want."

"Mom, please keep it." Qian Cheng pushed it back, "There are many expenses at home, so you can spend it as you see fit."

Hou Yufen hesitated for a moment, but still took it: "Then Mom will keep it for you when you get married. If you need money, just tell Mom."

"Okay, by the way, Mom, do we have any needles and thread?"

"Yes, I do." Hou Yufen took a sewing box out of the cabinet. "What are you going to do with it?"

"Sew something." Qian Cheng took the sewing kit, found a scrap of cloth, and went back to his room.

He sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) and began to ponder.

Fishing requires a fishing rod, fishing line, fishing hook, and float.

Fishing rods are easy to find; just find a thin bamboo pole. Many households in the village have bamboo poles for drying clothes.

Fishing line is a bit more troublesome.

These days, there's no nylon thread; you can only use hemp rope or silk thread.

The hemp rope was too thick, and the silk thread was too brittle.

Qian Cheng thought for a moment and decided to use sewing thread, twisting multiple strands together, which should be strong enough.

Fishhooks can be made from needles. Heat the needle until it's red-hot, bend it into a hook shape, and then sharpen it.

The simplest thing to do is to find a goose or duck feather and cut off a small section.

Qian Cheng first made the fish hooks.

He picked out a large sewing needle, held it with pliers, and heated it over an oil lamp.

The needle was heated until it became red-hot and soft, and he carefully bent it into a hook shape with another pair of pliers.

After bending the needle, wait for it to cool and harden before sharpening it on a whetstone.

The first fishhook was a bit ugly; it wasn't curved enough, and the hook point wasn't sharp enough. Qian Cheng made a second one, and this one was much better.

Next, make the float.

He found a goose feather in the yard, left over from killing a goose a while ago, and cut off the thickest part in the middle, about two centimeters long.

Then make the fishing line.

He took out the thickest sewing thread from the sewing box, a total of six strands, twisted them into one, and tested it. It was quite strong and should be able to support a fish weighing two or three pounds.

Finally, the fishing rod.

Qian Cheng wandered around the yard and spotted a bamboo pole for drying clothes.

Bamboo poles are slender and flexible, making them perfect for fishing rods.

He told Hou Yufen to cut the bamboo pole into 1.5-meter sections.

Tie the fishing line to one end of the bamboo pole, attach the hook to the end of the line, and thread the float through the middle of the line.

The simple fishing rod is now ready.

Qian Cheng took the fishing rod and tested it out in the yard.

The bamboo pole is light, flexible, and fairly comfortable to hold.

Now all that's missing is the bait.

Earthworms are the best, but in the dead of winter, the ground is frozen solid, and you can't find any earthworms.

Qian Cheng thought for a moment and decided to use dough. He mixed cornmeal with a little water, kneaded it into small balls, and hung them on the fishing hook.

Everything is ready, just waiting for tomorrow.

Qian Cheng packed up his fishing rod and lay down on the kang (a heated brick bed).

A job panel appeared before my eyes.

Name: Qian Cheng

【Occupation: Chef (Newbie) lv.1: 6/100】

Carpentry (Newbie) lv.1: 9/100

[Student (Newcomer) lv.1: 3/100]

If fishing could become a profession...

Will there be any attribute bonuses?

For example, increasing patience? Improving hand-eye coordination?

Qian Cheng grew increasingly excited as he thought about it.

The next morning, after finishing breakfast, Qian Cheng packed his fishing rod, wrapped some cornmeal in oil paper, and went out.

Hou Yufen asked, "Did you go to your master's house again?"

"No, let's go for a walk by the river."

"What are you doing going to the river in this freezing weather?"

"fishing."

Hou Yufen was taken aback: "Fishing? In the dead of winter, how can you possibly catch anything?"

"Let's give it a try," Qian Cheng said. "If we don't catch anything, we'll just have a stroll."

He went out the door and headed straight for the river.
